Decreasing bottles

Hi. Coming out of lurker status - actually I haven't even had time to lurk lately. With the updated mobile bump app and the fact that I started reading the Divergent series I've kind of gone away.

A will be 10 months on Monday. I nurse her in the morning and at night to bed and during the day she takes 2 5 ounce bottles plus solids for breakfast/lunch/dinner. Recently my supply has tanked and I can barely pump the 10 ounces she needs during the day while at daycare. I have about 60 ounces in the freezer and I feel that I may have to start tapping into that. At our 9 month checkup, the doctor rushed us out of the office so I didn't have much time to ask any questions about milk. I hate to supplement w/formula at this point just to switch her to cow's milk in 2 months.

Do you think it would be too early to do 1/2 BM and 1/2 Cow's milk? Or even 3/4 BM? Or do you think I should maybe try to see how she does with 2 4 ounce bottles instead? Sorry if this has been discussed previously. If it has, can someone point me in the right direction.

  • Thanks! It does help. Right now she gets 1 snack a day at daycare. I'll see if maybe I can up it to 2 snacks. Maybe cut back a little on the milk

I'll keep pumping while at work and even if I have to tap into my stash hopefully it will only be for an ounce or 2.

  • Basically what we are doing is slowly decreasing the amount in one bottle and offering a snack and milk in place of that bottle. We started with the mid afternoon bottle and will be the first bottle I actually fully drop in favor of a snack, around 11 months. She's eating a ton of solids so I'm not really concerned about calories. All the other bottles I'll just turn to milk+ meals/snacks. My DS still drinks 3 5 oz glasses of milk during the day.

  • I didn't BF so I can't help with that. I will say that we only give DS 3 6oz bottles a day morning nighttime and around 2ish. He does great with that. We aren't planning to start cows milk until he's 1. I would just try adding some formula, it is just for a short time.
  • I don't understand why it would be so bad to supplement formula (rather than WCM). It has exactly what she needs. Unless it's a cost issue?

  • DD has drastically dropped her bottle intake. Her day goes
    6am - 3 ounces I offer 4 but get 3 in her is a fight!
8:15 Cereal with fruit at daycare
    930 4 ounces of milk

    11 am lunch.
1 pm or when ever she is done with a nap. They offer a bottle, very rarely takes more than 2 ounces

    2 pm yogurt

They try another bottle, if it's ano go she gets another snack

    Supper at 5:45
    7:45 5-6 ounces of milk

I just send a ton of food, and 3 bottles. 1 is usually not touched.
I just try to make sure she is eating/ drinking all day.
I would make sure there is enough wet diapers.

It's not that it's bad to supplement with formula it's just that I'm worried about getting her used to the formula taste and then having to wean her from that. I don't want to go thru the weaning processing twice. Maybe there is no difference in taste I don't know.

You might be surprised. Mine just drank it up no different than BM. I just gave him a small bottle with a couple oz of straight formula and increased from there.

  • Thanks for your routines. I'm going to talk to daycare about upping her snacks. I don't have to pack food for her so I will see if she can give her 2 snacks a day vs just the 1. Although I will continue to squeeze every last drop of milk out of me

That's good to know. I was having some irrational fear that she would just completely reject it. Although I have to say with solids she loves everything so if I have to within the next 2 months use formula.

This is one of the reasons I saved all the formula samples I was sent in the mail. Hopefully they are all still ok.

  • How much solid food is in those meals? We do 3 full meals, no snacks generall they are 3ish ounces of food in each. Plus 6 5 oz bottles a day.

All of you that feed 3 solid meals a day... What does your baby eat?? I feel like I'm so clueless on what to give him because he just barely has two teeth. So far, I only give veggie purees, yogurt, yogurt drops, puffs, Cheerios and real strawberries and real peaches. #ineedmoreideas
Everything, pretty much.  CJ has zero teeth so not having many teeth is Ok.  I just cut things up small and give it to him a little at a time.  Meat, veggies, fruit, you name it.

  • My LO was weaned off the breast early last week and she had never had formula before that so I was worried about the transition as well. I just kept offering the sippy cup with formula and after rejecting it a couple of times she just took it one day and never looked back.

Someone suggested the Earths Best Organic formula in a thread a while back because their doctor said it tasted more like breast milk than some others so I hunted that out (found it at Target) and she seems to like it.

As far as solids, I give my girl anything we are eating, for the most part. She likes salmon, ham, turkey, chicken. I just rip those into little pieces and she shovels them in. Pears cut into spears, peaches sliced and peeled, Greek yogurt mixed with purées, berries, those are all favorites of hers. And I have stopped buying puffs and let her have goldfish crackers and mini nilla wafers on occasion. She thinks those are pretty much amazing.
  • I have so much anxiety over making the switch to real food. Right now DS eats 4 meals, 2 of those include solids. Just this morning I tried eggs after his morning bottle. I need to get more adventurous with what food I'm feeding him and then will start to increase the amount of solid food. My plan is to avoid WCM altogether.

Milo eats everything and he just got his first two teeth. Before he had those, he just gummed things down. He eats steak weekly and chicken almost once a day. His favorite food though is definitely tacos! He gets whatever we make for dinner. Last night it was curried chicken and rice. Tonight it will be lasagna :)

  • Team he eats what I eat. Honestly, even having 7 teeth, they are all in the front so they are really only good for tearing/biting, not actual chewing. I just break everything into tiny pieces to where even if he swallowed them whole he wouldn't choke. He mushes it around and swallows. I stick to soft things, and pull meat into short stringy bites.

  • Just a thought- could your period be coming? Sometimes women have a temp supply drop with their period but their supply usually goes back to normal when your period is gone. A calcium/magnesium supplement helps with the milk drop.Have you tried oatmeal to get a little extra boost since you are almost pumping enough?

And girl use that stash if you have it- that is what it is there for!

When my period comes and my supply is a bit low, DD2 (and DD1 when she was a baby) just eats a bit more solids that week and then when my milk comes back she goes back to nursing more.

My period came back in May. But my supply didn't start to decrease until maybe mid July.

For solids she eats whatever we eat. I'm not really exactly how much tho. I just keep feeding her until she starts to throw it on the floor. I want to ask daycare on Monday how much they give her since I don't have to pack any food. I do know she can eat an entire hotdog and still look for more.

  • I used to be the same way about eating after bedtime, but I've made a conscious effort in the last few weeks to have dinner 'with' him. I make something Sunday night and we eat that most of the week. Now, sometimes I only manage to eat a few bites when I'm feeding him, and then I have a second dinner after he goes to sleep. He also started to eat more when he saw me eating off of the same plate.

Aren't they ok if cut up well?
Yeah, if you're cutting them in halves or quarters they shouldn't be a choking hazard. I just don't like all the nitrites.

Everything in moderation though! As long as he isn't having a hotdog for lunch every day, I'm sure it's more than fine.

I take the skin off and the cut it into like 1/8ths. She gets a hot dog if I eat a hot dog which is like 2-3x a month.

    DD's routine:

    6:30AM  - wake up, 6oz bottle

8:30AM - solid breakfast (usually some fruit and cheerios, kix, etc)

    10:30AM - 6oz bottle

12:30PM - solid lunch (usually some steamed veggies and some puffs.  occasionally some pieces of cheese)

3:45PM - 6 oz bottle and / or snack (puffs, yogurt melts or 1/2 a fruit pouch)

6:30PM - dinner (hearty veggies like sweet potato / avocado and some protein like beans or meat, usually chicken or ground turkey)

8:30PM - bed.  4-6oz bottle.  Now that she has teeth, I'm trying to wean her off the last bottle right before bed.  I'm trying to switch it out with water.

Summary: she gets 3 solid meals plus a snack and between 18-24oz of formula every day right now.  I'm not sure if this it too much formula based on the volume of solid food she is eating right now, but she always wants all of it lately.  Of course, this schedule adjusts slightly depending on the day.

This is almost exactly like our schedule. I do think I'm going to start to increase the food amount though and try and decrease their daytime bottles at daycare from 6 down to 4 ounces.

So here's my other issue.. We usually don't eat dinner till after DS goes to bed at night. I just can't get my act together and make dinner ready by 6. Maybe this should be my first area of focus.
We get home at 6-6:15, and I frantically try to make dinner for all of us before LO starts his bedtime routine, but it rarely happens. Usually, he ends up drinking a bottle at 8pm, going to bed, and then DH & I eat the meal that's been on the stove since 7pm.

  • Glad to see I'm not the only one with the crazy feeding schedule. We are seriously feeding these kids all. the. effing. time. I am looking forward to when milk goes with meals, and there are no bottles in between. When does that happen?
