Oh I have one that for some reason really bothers people. I think eating meat is wrong. I just can't understand how it's ok to eat a living breathing animal with feelings and families etc etc. I know peoples first argument is always "that's why god put them here," but I'm not a believer so I disagree with that. Another is that it's the circle of life and an animal would eat us if they wanted to, but why compare our advanced minds to those of a wild animal who doesn't know much more about life besides basic survival instinct? Anyways, I don't judge those who eat it. My husband eats it my step
Son eats it, but I won't cook it or eat it and haven't since I first started comprehending what it was I was actually eating. I've thought about posting this several Thursdays, but I hate when I tell people I don't eat meat so they start going into detail about how they love to hunt or love a juicy steak that's "bloody" n stuff. It makes my stomach turn. And for some reason people LOVE to shove in my face how little they care about eating meat/animals when I say I don't like to.
I have no problem with anyone feeling this way or being a vegetarian for these reasons. The ONLY thing that bothers me about Vegans or Vegetarians is the select few who are full of shit and just like saying they don't eat meat because they are AWs (and eat meat behind closed doors). It doesn't sound like you are one of them as your empathy for animals seems very genuine. >-

-- On the flipside of this, most vegetarians I've met are pretty haughty and act superior to us cavemen who eat meat. Not saying this is you at all!
You guys are the best. Totally rainbow farting unicorns and I love it, you respond kinder to me than my family. People (usually coworkers) have this desire to try and trick me into eating it or waving a burger in front of my face saying "mmmmm" like I find it the least bit appetizing. Totally agree with to each their own, which is why I don't care that my husband eats it. He understands why I don't, and typically eats vegetarian with me unless we go out to eat. Only time he eats it in the house, he cooks it, and he would never think of asking me to cook it for him.
I eat meat but being barbaric about it is gross (talking about bloodiness or the pleasure of the kill). I can't handle that either and I do enjoy chicken and steak etc! I think you are surrounded by jerks at work!!!
I once had an argument with a vegan classmate in college over honey. He said it was immoral to eat honey because the bees are enslaved/used for the goods they produce for themselves. We essentially steal the product of their hard work from them, etc.
Well I'm a beekeeper (not now, but grew up on a farm and we had bees). The bees actually benefit from having the honey harvested. I won't go into details here, but proper beekeeping practices actually help the hive stay healthy, strong, and disease free. And the honey that is harvested is not what they use. Beekeepers leave the bees the honey they need and take the excess. It's kind of a mutual relationship of we'll care for you, give you a nice house next to some awesome nectar sources, and you SHARE some honey.
Sorry for the soap box rant, but whenever I see vegan anything at the store I think of that ignorant kid and enslaving the bees and it makes me grumpy. :P
I know many of the ladies here are looking forward to maternity leave... I am however really struggling with this.. I have to talk to my boss tomorrow about maternity leave and I really don't want to !
Maybe its because there is suddenly SO much going on , and some really cool shit coming up at work, but I am right now having a really hard time trying to figure out how to be OK with 8 weeks away from work.
This honey-hating guy I argued with was sickly skinny and always lethargic. He needed some protein...a truck load of protein. I'm not sure what he ate.
I have seen some vegan folks who look pretty healthy, but IMHO, our bodies were made to be omnivores (look at our teeth and digestive system/nutritional needs), so let's just eat all the food.

Shits gettin real....
I feel the same way, but am taking 16 weeks off.
Yesterday I mentioned to my SD that I feel like my calendar isn't quite as full, and he told me that our ED told him that we should try to reduce my stress load during this time, and make my transition a bit easier. At the same time, my professional trajectory just underwent some major readjustments because my team was reorganized, so I know that my ED is hoping that when I come back in Feb I will essentially start a new in my new role. I appreciate the fact that they are so concerned about my health and comfort level, but I love what I do and the transition to maternity leave is killing me! I'm also afraid that I'll miss so much over the 4 months that I am gone!
I will be missing so many clinical data releases and medical congresses during 4Q, in addition to the culmination of 2 huge initiatives that I was asked to lead, and I must admit that part of me is so disappointed I won't be there for the conclusion and to make the final presentation. I moved up the timeline on one project so I can "go out with a bang", but it's still not the same.
(
Anyway, sorry for the rambling. I completely sympathize!!!

I am in the same place! I am implementing some new software (Which I have been fighting to do since March!) Now it seems I have the go ahead, and I will get everything ready for the launch. Then my team will present to our sales and marketing organization in Las Vegas, the week I am due! I am having a hard time, partially because I am a control freak but this project is my baby (no pun intended) and I miss the best part of it. I am also afraid I will come back to a total shit show. Or that they will decide they don't even need me!
My UO for the day, I am so sick and tired of turning on the TV, and seeing all the controversy over the Michael Brown shooting. AND what infuriates me even more are the opinions of uneducated and ignorant people. If you have no law enforcement background, then I you should keep your mouth shut about how you THINK it should have been handled.

Really? So citizens should have no input and must remain silent on all issues relating to law enforcement? Because no one has ever abused power OR handled something wrong?
Also, I'm betting I know who you are referring to when you say "uneducated and ignorant people".

Well, I am referring to people who insist on voicing their opinion when they don't have their facts straight. At this point NO ONE knows exactly what happened, so yes, until then people should just keep their mouths shut about how they think it should be handled. It would be just like me telling YOU how to do your job, when I have no background, education, or training in what you do for a living.

People are allowed to have opinions, hypothesize and perform situational analysis on what they think may have happened and the reactions/repercussions.
The truth is that no one may never know all the facts except for the individuals who participated in the incident. And one of them is dead. When a key witness is no longer there to provide a story because their life has been taken, people are going to ask questions and hypothesize even more. When a group of people are scared, that's going to happen with even more fervor.
Regarding the bolded, thanks to google people do that every day. It's just part of living in a society where information is constantly available.
It's never right to advocate following blindly without asking questions and assuming that people in positions of power are always acting in the best interest of the people, or that a situation was handled in a manner that was fair and just.

Public figures are open to public scrutiny. And I think it is MORE than fair for people to want to know what happened. And I think it is MORE than fair for people to call for dialogue so that we can work to make progress against racism in our country.
I don't think people should use violence or act like criminals in order to get what they want/feel they deserve.

You don't think that shooting an unarmed teenager six times in the middle of a public street should be controversial?
Also, I'm pretty sure that your opinion of who is uneducated and ignorant is almost certainly just those who don't believe the same thing you do. Which...is special.

This makes me really angry, so angry I have a hard time even forming a coherent response. This country was founded on the idea that people should be able to voice their opinion, that we should be able to question our government and those in positions of power. I actually think that people who don't question our law enforcement officers (or other people in power) are the ignorant ones. Cops are people. People make mistakes. I certainly am not going to stand here and say we should trust that cop. He shot an unarmed man and killed him. Not even a man, a child. He killed a child. He shot him six times. If this happened to a white kid in the suburbs you had better believe people would want answers. This boy deserves the same. I don't care if he stole cigars, I don't care if he was being disrespectful to the officer. I DON'T CARE what was happening. This boy was killed and his family and friends deserve to know as much of the facts surrounding that as possible. We only get answers by asking questions. Reading over this, I guess I am sick and tired of "hearing the opinions of uneducated and ignorant people" but I think we probably disagree about who those people are.
Eta: quote fail
You make good points, the only thing I can't agree with is that you don't care what the kid was doing when he got shot. If he was assaulting the cop or wrestling for his gun would you care then? What if that cop was your husband? Maybe I'm just reading your post wrong so forgive me if that's the case. I would think that in situations like this there is always an investigation. I just don't understand why the riots in the meantime. It makes the peaceful protesters look bad and leaves a bad taste in everyone's mouths. I feel so bad for all the innocent people affected by their shenanigans.
nobody is standing up for the criminals taking advantage of this bad situation. At least that I can see...
The peaceful protestors have every right to question, protest, call for change etc. I have seen numerous interviews and they don't deny what the cops are saying Brown did... They just want to know the facts AND they want to know why he was shot 6 times when he was away from the car with his hands above his head...
The reality is, this isn't an isolated incident in our country. It it were, it wouldn't get this attention. The problem is systematic tension between blacks and whites. distrust is a problem. If we keep pointing fingers at THAT group, we are in trouble. I don't blame that cop. The problem is with the attitudes of our country. Poor training? Overall attitude of superiors/friends/neighbors/media toward blacks?
I don't know the answer but how many children have to die before we can talk honestly about the issues in our country?

Officers are trained on how to neutralize a threat without using their weapon. So if Brown attacked the cop, I can think of plenty of other ways he could have stopped such an attack, including use of a taser. Shooting four times in the arm/torso region and twice in the head isn't what I would think of in that situation. Plus, it's not as if Brown was killed by six bullets shot at close range during a struggle because there would be forensic evidence in support of that. If I recall, they have already publicly stated that the gunshots did not come in the midst of any struggle. Which means there are options.
You don't understand the riots because you have the benefit of white privilege. I'm not saying you're a bad person for it, but you just do. There's only so long that people in a community can be repressed, oppressed, and victimized by systemic and non-systemic forms of racism before it boils over and explodes like a pressure cooker. The occasional looting is distracting from the real issue, but frankly, I think it's a red herring for people to get so worked up about looting while also trying to reserve judgment on the shooting. Like seriously, some stolen Doritos and Slim Jims are going to change your opinion on people who are legit pissed over a teenager being shot down in public?
I've also seen video of some police response and I can't say that their behavior has been helpful to the situation either. Taking a large gun, pointing it at people who are pissing you off, and saying "I'm going to fucking kill you" is counterproductive. And when asked for the cop's name, being told in response that the cop's name is "Go fuck yourself" is similarly unhelpful. Definitely doesn't set up the idea that the cops are there for the protection of the community so much as to repress.

There is a huge difference between asking questions and voicing your opinion before you know all the concrete facts. Of course the family needs answers, that is not what I am saying. My outrage is stemmed from people on social media, sitting behind their computers voicing their opinions. At this point know one knows exactly what happened. When I say "ignorant and uneducated" opinions, I am referring to comments like these: "just another trigger happy pig" or "oh it was because he was black" or "don't understand why they can't just shoot to injure"
I have heard so many conflicting reports regarding the Michael Brown shooting that I think it is still going to be some time before we find out what really happened, if we ever get a complete account.
I've heard that the officer was assaulted so forcefully that he sustained fractures to bones in his face and was actually dazed prior to shooting the young man as he threatened further violence against him. I've heard that the young man was running away when he was shot. Completely contradictory accounts...and there are others in between. We just don't know what happened.
I really do think this is being handled poorly from all sides, but I would never say that people shouldn't be able to voice their opinions and/or objections in a lawful manner regarding events of this nature. Really now.
@dana2die4 I was reading Kareem Abdur Jabur's article in Time and he mentions how police officers are also a group that gets treated poorly. I hate the expression "pig" and I truly stand by what I said earlier, this cop did the wrong thing from the evidence I have read. However it is a national issue not just oh all cops like to kill people. It is not about cops. It is about racism, poverty, oppression and power. Not of police of our society...
But I would be careful how you word your opinions I guess because you come off as understanding of shooting a teenager at distance who is unarmed... I don't know how anyone can see that as okay.
I'm not taking one side or another. But I do question whether the violent rioters are acting out because they feel it's the only way to be heard, or are they using the protests as an excuse to be ass holes? But these are all very good perspectives and I'm glad you posted because it makes me think about it in ways I wouldn't.
Finally a good UO! There's too much happiness up in this place lately!!
Maybe as an escape from all the unhappiness in the news? Seriously breaking my heart - suicide, beheadings, unrest in Ferguson, children dying... How much more can I take? I would rather get back to flaming people about showers and feeling the need to poop during sex...

Many of the people they are arresting are from far away places and they are extremists. I am glad they started referring to them as criminals in the press conferences rather than protestors. It is good to make that clear distinction I think.
@lrobi13 Me too! The whole family on that show just grosses me out. And that little girl is such a brat. Plus I can't stad the fact that they have to use so many subtitles because you can't understand wtf they are saying!
And just so you also know where I am coming from; I am married to a police officer who has been in an "officer involved shooting" and who was under the scrutiny from the general public. We all knew he was justified in his shoot, however, reading people's, yes I will say it again "uneducated, hurtful, and ignorant" comments were enough to drive any one bat shit crazy, especially when you know the facts and they don't. Have some compassion for the officer and his family, because little do you know, he could have been completely justified and was scared for HIS life. Think how him and his family feel right now? I'm not saying he is innocent, but people should hold their nasty opinions until the investigation is final.
Oh and just because the kid was "unarmed" doesn't mean anything. Just saying.

I'm sorry that 100% of people are not immediately siding with and sympathizing with the shooter or the police officers, and are instead asking questions and seeking answers about the deceased individual. Forgive all those people having compassion for the deceased; they know not what they do to upset and offend the family of the police. Screw the family of the dead.
Also, let's not pretend that corruption doesn't exist and that sometimes people really do get to walk away as if their hands are clean, when in reality they are not.
ETA: Also, I think you're too involved and close to this to see both sides and have an unbiased opinion. Unless someone completely agrees with you, this entire discussion is moot.

Yeah I kind of recognized your bias as an officer's wife from your tone. I think you personalized this situation though. Just because he was unarmed doesn't mean he wasn't a threat to the officer's life. There have been two "officer involved" shootings here where the suspects staged it to look as if they had a weapon in their pocket, when in fact they didn't.

I TOTALLY disagree with this statement. It might not mean EVERYTHING but it has a lot of weight... You even call him a kid in this. This makes you sound like a total bitch. IMHO.
Just because he was unarmed doesn't mean he wasn't a threat to the officer's life. There have been two "officer involved" shootings here where the suspects staged it to look as if they had a weapon in their pocket, when in fact they didn't.
You said it doesn't mean anything. It means a lot. Yes, there are other factors. But it isn't worth nothing that he wasn't armed.
I don't think you'll get this because you're so biased, but the fact that a cop can shoot and kill someone in cold blood, and get away with it, just because he felt threatened, is an incredibly scary proposition for many people. The fact that the killing can be justified just be a few words from the officer gives them an incredible amount of power. When individuals have that much power, their behaviors should be scrutinized, and when someone ends up dead, whether they be an officer or a merely a citizen, there should be intense scrutiny applied to the situation.
Your eta about it being justifiable to kill unarmed individuals makes many people want to hide. You may be boasting about it from your privileged position of being married to an officer, but for many, it's terrifying.

On the flipside of this, most vegetarians I've met are pretty haughty and act superior to us cavemen who eat meat. Not saying this is you at all!
I think you are surrounded by jerks at work!!!
WTF do they even eat?! Everything is a no.
I have seen some vegan folks who look pretty healthy, but IMHO, our bodies were made to be omnivores (look at our teeth and digestive system/nutritional needs), so let's just eat all the food.

Also, I'm betting I know who you are referring to when you say "uneducated and ignorant people".

I am a teacher. Need I say more about people telling me how to do my job?
Public figures are open to public scrutiny. And I think it is MORE than fair for people to want to know what happened. And I think it is MORE than fair for people to call for dialogue so that we can work to make progress against racism in our country.
I don't think people should use violence or act like criminals in order to get what they want/feel they deserve.

I've heard that the officer was assaulted so forcefully that he sustained fractures to bones in his face and was actually dazed prior to shooting the young man as he threatened further violence against him. I've heard that the young man was running away when he was shot. Completely contradictory accounts...and there are others in between. We just don't know what happened.
I really do think this is being handled poorly from all sides, but I would never say that people shouldn't be able to voice their opinions and/or objections in a lawful manner regarding events of this nature. Really now.
I would rather get back to flaming people about showers and feeling the need to poop during sex...
That oughta lighten the mood @MrsSarahRenee ! Unless it's not unpopular, I dunno...
For some reason I can watch that show but can't handle Honey Boo Boo...that shows turns my stomach.

I think because of your personal experience you don't have much compassion or understanding of people on the other side. I'm not saying you have to, but just as you wish everyone would reserve their opinion, maybe you should too. Being married to a cop doesn't make you right. Just biased.
Yeah I kind of recognized your bias as an officer's wife from your tone.
I think you personalized this situation though. I don't know what happened to your husband but I am not sure the same parallels would apply if you consider what we have said about why we (or people in general) are questioning/confused/angry...
