*UPDATE* Doctor couldn't find HB.

edited August 2014 in February 2015 Moms
I went to my monthly appointment this morning and the doctor couldn't find the baby's HB with the Doppler. I'm 13w3d today. The doctor started getting flustered and nervous. He started asking me like where I was originally from, etc I guess to lighten the air. He wanted me to get an US but the sonographer was so busy with other patients. They wont let me come back just to be sure. I'm so nervous. I have to wait until Sept 17 for my next appointment. Is this common practice?? I think tomorrow I am going to call and tell them I want to come back in. :-/

UPDATE: I called my doctor and demanding that they bring me back in for an ultrasound to make sure everything was ok. They placed me on hold for 30 minutes! I hung up and called back, the receptionist told me they had no openings for an U/S for 3 weeks. I told her this was an emergency to me. She still said sorry we can't get you in. I asked to speak to the practice manager, she was conviently in a meeting. I drove to the ER, explained the situation and waited to been seen. 3 hours later, they called me back and I went for an U/S. They completely skipped trying with the Doppler. There little baby was flipping us off. Lol strong heartbeat and moving all around. I tried not to worry but it was really hard! Everything looks completely healthy!

To answer someone's question- I don't see a military doctor. Our naval hospital sends us out on town for maternity appointments. It's the only OB/GYN in the area, unless I drive an hour and a half away.

I plan on talking to the head doctor in charge at my office to ensure this doesn't happen to me or another woman again. THANK YOU ALL for your thoughts and prayers!!! Y'all are awesome!

Re: *UPDATE* Doctor couldn't find HB.

  • Oh, no! Yeah, I would definitely call! Doctors usually have 15 minutes at each end of the day to squeeze someone in, especially if it's an emergency. I'm so sorry, that must be the worst feeling in the world.
  • Loading the player...
  • That's horrible! They could have squeezed you in, I would definatly call them!
  • I wanted to make sure I wasn't going to be crazy for calling in the morning! I definitely cannot wait another month. It's all I will worry about. Fingers crossed they get me in tomorrow without any trouble!
  • Good luck with your call tomorrow, hope they get you in and everything's ok!

  • I would call them and demand for doppler and u/s until my baby was found. Is it military medical? They're the worst! I'm so sorry you're dealing with this stress. You have my T&Ps.

  • It isn't unreasonable AT ALL to call in the morning... I can't believe they let you leave and you have a month to wait! That's absurd. My thoughts are with you!
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • My dr has a hard time finding the heartbeat because I have a tilted uterus. She tries every time and always checks with the ultrasound immediately. I would definitely call and be seen. I cant believe they would make you wait a whole month!
  • I went for an appointment at 13w and doc couldn't find the hb w the Doppler. Went into ultrasound room and the baby was flipping and kicking all over the place. It must have been running away from the Doppler. I know you will worry but try not too!
  • It is definitely not ok to make you wait for another month. As PP have said, call back and make them get you in.

  • You should definitely call back and see if you can even set it with a different doc or different location. That's not right to do you like that. This is your baby's health. Call back.
  • Oh goodness, I'm so sorry! Definitely call back! I probably wouldn't have left the office without an ultrasound... I sure hope everything will be okay!
  • I would definitely call back and raise some hell!!
But if it makes you feel any better I was 13+5 when I was in the ER last week and they couldn't find either baby on the Doppler. I went to my normal appointment today and they are both healthy and very much there! Hopefully that will ease your mind a little bit. Try not to stress!
  • YES. Call and ask for a sooner appt.  And if they can't give you one, then go to the ED or a walk-in clinic and ask to be seen and explain your situation. Who scheduled you?  Was it the doctor?  I work with prenatal patients at my clinic and our scheduling people ARE NOT medical people and they don't have clinical judgment when it comes to scheduling someone who isn't a "straightforward" patient.  If you went through a scheduler and didn't explain your situation (HB couldn't be found) they may have just scheduled you for the next convenient time.

I sometimes get on a prenatal patient's chart (especially if they're high risk) to follow-up on something and then will notice their next appt isn't for 6 weeks, when they really should be seen within the week.  So then I wind up having to call them myself to squeeze them into a spot with either another doctor at the clinic or I'll double book their provider for a time slot.

Either way, call back and ask to be seen and explain the urgency of the situation.  If you were to be having a miscarriage, waiting it out for almost a month is unacceptable - and I'm guessing they would take you in the ED (although I'm not sure how that would work out with insurance).

Also, if it makes you feel any better, the clinic I work at will not do a doppler heart beat before 14 weeks because at that stage it's sometimes too difficult to find.  Then you just wind up causing a whole bunch of stress for no reason.  Hopefully you're one of those people and you just need a few more days to get to that point.
  • How awful! I think you're nice to wait until the morning! I probably wouldn't have left. That's just cruel to do to someone.
  • Awe! I would definitely get in sooner! I am in shock they didn't get you in to have an ultrasound. Like my mouth is just wide open in disbelief. Thoughts and prayers your way!
  • First of all try not to stress! I went in for my 12 wk apt last week and my doctor couldn't find a heartbeat.  Thankfully, even though the sonographer was full for the day, she squeezed me in that same day and we saw our sweetie moving around and doing well!! So you're little sweetie is probably fine.  The doc couldn't find the babies heartbeat b/c the "placenta is in the front" which caused her to only hear my heartbeat.  The sonographer said that they will probably continue to have this problem for awhile due to the location of the placenta and my fibroid.

Second, certainly call back and be as kind as you can to whoever you speak with and get a sonogram scheduled. :-)  Good luck.

  • I am so sorry you are dealing with this! You are absolutely not crazy for calling in the morning and demanding a same day appointment. I probably would have refused to leave and acted like a psycho lady-- so good for you for being classy. I can't even tell you to stat calm because just reading this is making me flustered. Please keep us posted and be sure to bitch out the doctor who put you through this! It's unacceptable!

  • Dopplers are SUCH finicky things - that's why I keep mentioning it to people who are thinking of buying one. I would call your OB and raise hell. But if they refuse to see you, walk into a clinic or even an elective U/S place. But please try not to stress over it.

  • Don't worry... a lot of places won't even try to find the heartbeat with the doppler until 15 weeks.  Where I am, you don't have the option of just going for an ultrasound if they don't find the heartbeat.  You're told, "welp, couldn't find it this time, we'll see if we can catch it next time."  At this stage, they're pretty tiny, and still wiggling around a lot.  I honestly wouldn't get worked up over it.

They don't have those where I am.  Any ultrasound in my province is done at a designated imaging centre.  No doctor's office has a portable ultrasound machine.

I honestly wouldn't worry before 15 weeks or so if nothing's showing up on a doppler.

  • Wow yeah I would have demanded to wait until they could squeeze me in for an U/S. It doesn't take long at all! I had a scare with my home Doppler last week and they had me come in that day. GL!!
  • Tell them they need to see you tomorrow and if they don't get you an apt, switch doctors. And if they push back, give us their address and we'll all send nasty grams!
  • I agree that it is still on the early side for using a doppler. Try not to worry (I know, easier said than done!).  I hope you can get in tomorrow and see your little peanut bouncing around in there. :)

  • I had a tilted uterus and an anterior placenta with my 2nd. Both make finding the hb tough that early. At 12w the NP tried to find the hb but could not. I had an u/s a week later to check on a bleed I had and the baby was there. It's hard not to stress this early. I would call if it would help calm your fears.
  • Totally common. Im sure everything is okay.
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • No it's not common I believe if I was you I would go to my local Hospital and they will do the ultrasound if they don't get a HB!! Then if I was you I'd sure be finding me another doctor! WOW the doctor is there for YOU and that baby they should have never let you leave! I have am anterior placenta and they can't hear the HB with a Doppler on me either I have to get a u/s done each time for the HB! I mean that's blowing my mind that they'd even do you like that !! I'm so sorry that your having to go threw all this! Plz keep us informed!!! Your in my Ts&Ps' I had acmiscarrige in June 27th 2012 so even if something like that happens I'm here if you need some one talk!! Get to the hospital make sure that baby is ok and find a new OB/GYN (baby doc)!!
  • If it helps any.... Last week neither the nurse nor the doctor could find the heartbeat and it turned out that everything was fine with the baby.  Even this week when I went in to finish the first appointment, the nurse still had a hard time finding the heartbeat but the doctor eventually found it.  I'm surprised they didn't try harder to get you an ultrasound.  I'm such a worrier I know I couldn't wait unil my next appointment!  If they can't get you an ultrasound faster I would definitely go to an ER or somewhere.  I'm sending you some thoughts, prayers and hugs that is everything is A-OK! Good luck!
  • I found the HB on a Doppler @ 10 weeks and listen daily, my doctor couldn't find at 15 weeks and got really freaked out, had three docs come in to try ( I wanted to grab it out of their hands because frankly they sucked at looking for it), I told them it was fine I heard HB that morning and I wasn't worried, they did a quick u/w anyways and saw baby dancing away.. I wouldn't worry about it, baby is probably fine.
  • If my doc couldn't find the hb, she would wheel in the portable us machine. Not sure if that's because I'm high risk, though. My doc office is very accommodating though. Last pregnancy, my bump was smaller than the previous week, which concerned me (history: I have low fluid issues). They had me come in for an us to check my fluid level that day. I hope you call and ask to be seen again.

They couldn't find a heartbeat with the doppler for me.  They brought in a handheld low res u/s thing to the room and found the baby.

I have learned through my history with these practices that you really have to advocate for yourself.  You shouldn't have to, but call back and ask for an u/s [eta: or closer appt for another doppler] for your piece of mind.  There is no need for them to string you along for a month.  It will be miserable.  My doc did that to me, and never again.

  • Mine couldn't find it either and pulled out the u/s and everything was fine. My baby was just up higher than she realized. She was searching my pelvis and the babe was already up near my bellybutton!

Whoa way to freak someone out @mandabowlin.  I spoke with my dr as soon as we found out and asked him every question in the book.  One of the questions was when could I hear the HB with a doppler.  He said that before 16 weeks was usually very tricky.  He said not to buy one myself as it would drive me crazy.  With that he said after my NT scan they would see me until 16 weeks for that very reason.  I would call the office and speak with them about your concerns.  They will prob explain this to.  The Dr. should have said something in you appt to ease your worries. Good luck!
