Re: The Great Breastfeeding Thread

  • So true @AmyG*‌ my hospital LC got us started but the advice she gave for continuing after we left was awful. I made an appointment with the LC at my pediatrician's office and she was great!

  • This seems to be pretty obvious, but I'm slightly mad at myself for going 10 days before fixing it. If they say your LO had a tongue tie, even a mild one, GET IT CLIPPED! Just got DS's clipped this afternoon and it's amazing.

My baby has always been noisy since he was born. When he nurses he makes a loud squeaky noise if he is in a big hurry to eat. It goes away once he slows down. He's always done this, but I have been wondering lately if it's normal. I don't have latch or supply issues as far as I can tell - no pain, growth and diapers are good. Just curious, are there any other squeakers and moaners out there?

Sometimes my LO is as quiet as can be and other times he makes all kinds of squeaks and moans and he doesnt have any problems :)

  • We call ours "milk monster" because of te sounds she makes...she makes little noises throughout her feedings and they are adorable :)

YES Dd is a squeaker and at the hospital they were concerned about it but the neo-natologist believes it is Stridor "noisy breathing" specifically something called laryngomalacia. We had her checked by an ear nose and throat specialist and he said its a mild case. It's fairly common, basically there is a flap at the back of their throat and some babies have weaker ones that don't stand up as strong yet, as they grow it will get stronger and it will resolve itself in 6-8months, there's no treatment and it doesn't bother them, more concerning for people around them to hear it. If your concerned have an ENT check out your LO. They put a scope down her throat and it was over in a minute.

  • LO did wake up once overnight, but it wasmt even close to 3 hours yet so I tried cuddling him first. Then I fell asleep (with him on his tummy :-/) til just now. It was amazing to sleep that long, but I dont know if he really leaked through his diaper or if its milk (he slept on my chest) I dont normally leak a lot, luckily, but that was a long time.
  • Anyone else get fire and ice feeling boobs st night? How do you fix it?

  • @amlonica‌ I would be so thankful ! Just change the diaper and your shirt. Now go do a well rested happy dance.

  • DD is 7 weeks today and the last couple of days she had been nursing in a lot less time-wise than usual at each session. I track it all on an app and usually she spends from 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 hours nursing a day, and she's suddenly dropped to 2 1/2-3 hours. Just now I fed her and could only get her to eat for 12 minutes when usually it would be an 18-22 minute session. So far her diaper count is normal, but since it's only been a couple days I don't know if it would show yet or not.

She will unlatch when she's finished and then just stare at me awake so she isn't falling asleep, she just has decided that she's done and isn't interested in even opening her mouth up to re-latch for more. I'm afraid that something is wrong or that it's going to mess up my supply. But, I don't want to add extra pumping and end up with a ton of oversupply if she IS getting enough each time. I pump once a day still and am getting the same amount for my freezer stash, so I know that there is plenty more for her she just doesn't want to eat it for some reason. Could she have really gotten that much more efficient in 2 days to nurse for that much less time?

She could definitely be getting more efficient. Sounds like everything else is fine, so I wouldn't worry about it.

DS seemed to cut down his nursing time overnight as well. He's almost 5 weeks, and an average nursing session went from 20-25 minutes to now just 10-12 minutes. It happened around 2 weeks. I too was worried, and made sure to bring it up to his pediatrician at his 1 month visit. She said as long as his wet and dirty diapers stay the same and he is gaining weight he was definitely getting enough. He does the same thing as your DD. He unlatches and is just awake

Blockquote class="Quote" rel="Jdubb13">We've been dealing with green mucus stools for over 2 weeks now and I'm so frustrated. DD sleeps great, but anytime she's awake she's fussy and I think it's because her stomach hurts. She's also gaining weight like a champ so I know she's getting fed. I've done hours of research and I'm almost positive we're dealing with a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance and an overactive let down. She's a quick nurser and only eats for 5-10 minutes so I'm only nursing on one side per feeding. Her pediatrician recommended removing all dairy from my diet so I'm also on day 3 of that with no improvement, but I know it can take up to 2 weeks. I really don't think it's an allergy, but I'm willing to try anything before moving on. Did anyone experience the same issues or have any advice?

I do deal with green stool on occasion. They are typically the same consistency as her yellow ones though. What I do is she eats from one side and then I switch her to the other. Next feeding we start from the side we ended on before that way she can get hind milk. My LO is only two weeks and is not nearly as efficient as your LO so it's easy to interrupt her if need be to make the switch. Maybe try switching her at the 5 minute mark?

Also we did have mucus in her stool and I had to cut out tomatoes. Once I did that it cleared right up. She wasn't fussy either.

    Good luck!
I have had similar over supply issues with both kids. Block feeding makes the biggest difference for me. I only nurse one side per session and for any additional sessions during a set time period - currently 2 hours. This helps keep my supply in check so LO isn't trying to latch onto a fire hose spewing skim milk.

This. Only one side per feeding in a limited time frame making sure to empty that side, stopping when LO lets you know they are done. The worst thing to do (according the a few LC and LLL) is time LO on a side and switch them because there's a higher chance that they may not have gotten all the hind milk and switching means more fore milk which causes that green stool. I too have a very active let down and will even pull DD off when I first let down and let my water hose-like flow stop before I let her latch again to make sure the excess fore milk drains and my flow is more comfortable for her to handle.

LLL also mentions the no dairy suggestion that some docs recommend does not actually help with the extra lactose as your body doesn't add more lactose to your milk based on your own lactose ingestion. I just read an article on it on LLL's site that I wish I could find again so i could link it but I'm mobile right now.

It may not add lactose but I saw an immediate difference of gas pains when I cut out dairy. Now she doesn't hate me after feedings
  • @athenanolen gas is a total different issue and changing diet definitely can help with gas problems. I too have had to monitor my diet when LO had gas pains though for me it's the same foods that give me gas.

My comment was only referring to the milk imbalance and extra lactose as it relates to green stool and how cutting dairy doesn't help green stool

Random sort of BF related question: when I burp LO, she never used to spit up, but she's started to spit up a little occasionally this week (she's 3 1/2 weeks). She also has a little milk come out her nose when she burps. I know the spitting up is normal, though I don't know why it just started now, but is the milk out the nose normal?

Milk out of the nose is totally normal. My pediatrician said babies aren't too good at the sucking/swallowing/breathing thing and can have milk just end up in the wrong place. No worries!

Definitely normal. It's all connected. Some babies just have a tendency to be more of nose spitter uppers.

  • Does anyone's LO seem to prefer a side? DS can eat a whole feeding from the right side, next feeding I'll do the left and he'll nurse longer, but is almost always acting like he's still hungry after he unlatches. I almost always have to offer the right side again before he's content. Any thoughts?

  • My LO likes the right side. Sometimes I have to start her on the right and a minute or two later flip her to the left so I don't have to pump it. I also have to let her finish on the right sometimes, even if it's only a minute or two for her to be happy. Crazy!
  • So I finally ordered the small Medela breast shields because my right nipple is smaller than my left, and I wish I would have earlier! I always got SO much more out if my left side, like 60% more. I used it for the first time tonight and I was able to get the same ounces out of both sides! I did it during a normal feeding time and was able to get 3 oz out of each side, where before I would get 3 out of the left and 1 out of the right, makes me feel SO much better about pumping at work when I got back after my leave! I would definitely recommend to everyone to make sure you have the right sizes on your pump because it can make a big difference!

  • @honeybee434‌ what size did you switch to? I'm having a similar I issue but can't find the small medela shield anywhere.

@mary1217‌ I purchased a small size, so I pump with a medium that came with the pump on the left size and a small on the right. I got the shields on Amazon, but you can also order them on the Medela website. I couldn't find the small size anywhere in town. Some had larger, but not smaller. I have two sets of the personal connectors/shields so I just popped the medium shield off of two of them and attached the smalls, since on Amazon they came in sets of two. I did find singles at Target of larger sizes, but not doubles and no smalls.

ETA: there is another brand on Amazon that sells even smaller sizes that are compatible if you need an extra small instead of a small. Medela stops with smalls on what they sell.

You aren't alone, since I'm right there too. More my right boob than my left. Little man latches great in the left with minimal pain. Right boob latching makes me want to die a little bit inside. I'm killing the lanolin and using reusable breast pads....

My LO had a bad latch and left me bleeding from his tongue tie. I'm still working on healing from that almost 2 weeks ago. The LC recommended 50/50 mix of polysporine and hydrocortisone and then air dry. You don't have to rinse it off either. Also warm compresses. Hope you get some relief! I recommend seeing an LC.
  • I posted about this a page or so ago, but I think it's getting worse...DS will nurse anywhere from 30-45+ minutes on my left side and still be hungry. He will only go 10-15 on the right and be full. When I pump the left side(right now just doing it in the AM) I'll get 2+ oz (I started pumping 3 days ago), so I know it can't be a supply issue. Anybody else have this?? It's starting to drive me nuts!

I had a similar issue but with both breasts and I saw an LC and it turned out that DD wasn't getting a deep enough latch so she wasn't emptying the breast fully. Maybe your LO isn't latching as well on the left and not emptying it enough? I know DD has a more difficult time latching onto my left because the nipple is a little flatter.

He does fight getting on that side more then the other; sometimes he'll pop off 4-5 times before deciding to stay on. I noticed he falls asleep a lot on the left too. I'll look into his latch definitely! I'm about a day or two a way from calling the lactation consultant :( thanks!

I had the same problem and called my OB who prescribed a compound ointment. What an amazing ointment it is!!! Night and day difference. I know it has a little bit of antibiotic in it and steroid. I would ask for it they should know. But you have to go to a special pharmacy that can make a compound.

Edit to add - I have visited LC several times to ensure proper latch and positioning. He just has a very strong latch and I seem to be overly sensitive. He will be 6 weeks tomorrow and I have been weaning off of the ointment so hopefully I'm getting tougher nips!
  • DS will latch on and nurse fine for about 3 minutes. Then he starts unlatching and latching back on and will do this for a few minutes and I eventually have to burp him because he sucks in so much air. I then put him back on and we start the cycle all over again. I've never felt my let down (or at least I don't think I have) so I'm not sure if this could be a cause of a fast let down or maybe a slow let down. He just started doing this about a week ago, he will be 5 weeks tomorrow. He's had a bottle, but only twice and that was more than two weeks ago, so I don't think it would cause this. I'm going to put in a call to a LC consultant tomorrow but hopefully you ladies will have son advice.

The ointment ash is describing is APNO - all purpose nipple ointment - and it seriously changed my life with DS1. It is a blend of antibiotic, antiinflamatory, and anti fungal ointments. You'll need a script for it, and to find a compounding pharmacy to blend it. One day of using it was all it took to stop the pain for me. I only wish I hadn't waited so long to ask for it.

Same exact problem. My LO is 5 weeks yesterday and this has been going on for the last few days. It's worst in the evenings (4- 9pm). I'm really frustrated and worried it's something I'm doing or a problem with my milk.

@kdelgado03‌ did you learn anything from your LC? I called as well. They said it's likely related to overstimulation since it's every evening. She's gaining weight and has enough diapers so she wasn't concerned about milk production. Tonight is not going well so far though...

  • @Aimes33m‌ they pretty much told me the same thing. I tried to express some milk before letting him latch on and it seemed to help a bit, but not that much. The morning went pretty well, but his 3pm and 6pm feedings were not fun at all. He latched, unlatched, I burped him he latched again then unlatched, cried. The LC told me if it keeps going on for a couple of more days to call back and schedule and appointment. I think what frustrates me the most is that up until a week ago, we weren't having any problems. Hopefully this passes soon!

Overstimulation? Tell me more, please. We're dealing with a similar pattern here.
