Tdap vaccination

FTM here, how many are waiting until baby is born for the tdap vaccination? My doctor says she'll have me do it at my next appointment (I'll be 32 weeks then) she also mentioned it was optional, but I just wanted your thoughts on it.

  • I wasnt given the option to have it early last time. I got it after I gave birth and was still in the hospital.
  • I was wondering about this too. My doctor has not even mentioned it to me. I think I will ask him about it next week at my appointment.
  • As PP stated the hope is that by getting the Tdap during pregnancy you're able to pass along some immunity to your LO! I received mine yesterday!

  • I got it at my last appointment at 28 weeks. I was given the option of getting it then, at my next appointment or after giving birth. I figured I'd get it out of the way and hopefully pass on some immunity to LO. My OB also told me that babies can't get immunized right away so this was the only way to possibly immunize her for those winter months.

It was also recommended that DH get it as well to help prevent him from getting whooping cough and passing it on.

  • @TicketTuesday‌ my doctor didn't bring it up either, but I brought it up with them after I read the latest CDC recommendations. They recommended that I get it during third tri for the reasons PPs have said but they didn't have it available at their office. They said the easiest thing to do is just go to a Walgreens and get it. I did that earlier this week and it was a really easy process. The pharmacist did not need any note or permission from my doctor and he have me the same info about immunity passing to the baby, and having my husband and other caregivers vaccinated too. Walgreens also charged my insurance directly so I didn't have to pay anything!

I asked my nurse if I could get it at my OB and she said they only give it after birth in the hospital. I was surprised because everyone on here says to get it in third tri!

Anyway I'm confused why they give it after.

How does it pass immunity to baby after birth? I plan on breastfeeding but what about moms who don't?

@TicketTuesday Personally, I would be questioning my provider about why s/he isn't following the recommended vaccination schedule.
Yeah, I think I'll ask him at my next appointment. If I just go and get it on my own would I have to get an "ok" or a note from him, I wonder? I'll have to call around I guess.

I would get it on my own if he doesn't give it in 3rd tri. Remind him it's new CDC recommendations!

    @TicketTuesday‌

You didnt get one with your last pregnancy? Im assuming I dont have to get one again since mine was only 2 years ago.

As for where to get it, my DH was able to get it free at the local Health Dept because of having a newborn. It may be the same for pregnant women too. Im in VA-I dont know if that varies from state to state.

I had it yesterday at my 30 week appointment. My arm hurts like hell, but thank you to whomever recommended getting it on my dominant arm. (Right.) It could be a lot worse.
I got it in my left (non-dominant). Doesn't really feel so bad. I purposely didn't lift weights this morning, but I could have.

  • ALSO, it's recommended that anyone spending significant time with the baby get it as well. So, I translate that to anyone changing diapers. I think I made a post about it a few weeks ago. My husband will be getting, as will both grandmothers.

It is not about you having one two years ago. I had mine 19 months ago when I had DD you need to get it again so that the immunity from the shot passes on to your LO.

Also, why do people recommend getting it in the dominant arm?

  • I just asked my OB about this at my last appointment - he said that they'll give it to me in the hospital after I deliver.  I know some practices are routinely doing it at like 28-30 weeks though

  • My MFM said anyone close enough to change a diaper should have it, so DH and all grandparents are receiving it during my third tri, same time as me.  I think my BIL and his gf are also getting it out of a courtesy, even though I didn't make a formal request.

  • I'll be getting it at my next appointment. With the outbreaks in CA being so bad this year, I wouldn't feel comfortable not getting it.

Three years ago when my son was born they gave it to me and DH at his one week check up. Things have changed in just three short years.

  • I got mine earlier this week (32 weeks) - and my DH is going to get it this month. We asked my folks to get it and they will before October and my MIL was going to get it but turns out she actually got a TDAP 2 years ago- and from what I hear they are good for 10 years - Would anyone ask her to get it again? I'm thinking they only recommend pregnant women get it again even if had a year or two ago because they can pass on immunity but shouldn't matter for a grandparent, right?

I wouldn't ask her to get it again...I believe the old recommendation was every 10 years just like the plain 'ol tetanus booster, but I swear someone told me it was every 5 years now for the tDap. I might be crazy though..anyone else see this?

So my OB office recommended DH get it if it had been over 5 years. Their reasoning being that while the tetanus portion of the shot lasts for 10 years, the whooping cough portion may "expire" sooner.
    Straight from the CDC:

Vaccine protection for pertussis, tetanus, and diphtheria fades with time, so all adults 19 and older who have not previously received a Tdap vaccine need a booster shot. Experts recommend adults receive a tetanus and diphtheria booster (called Td) every 10 years and substitute a Tdap vaccine for one of the boosters. The dose of Tdap can be given earlier than the 10-year mark. Being up-to-date with one dose of Tdap is especially important for adults who are around infants. Remember that even fully-vaccinated adults can get pertussis. If you are caring for infants, check with your healthcare provider about what's best for your situation.

I will make sure to do it at my next appointment. I wonder why they did it the day my DD was born Edit for spelling
I think they only recently changed their viewpoint on this. It used to be comon to get it in the hospital, I think.

My mom and dad who will be around the baby a lot will also be getting the vaccine.

My hubby just got his today! :)
I'm also asking grandparents to get one.
  • I just got mine this week. I wish I knew about injecting the dominant arm! That sucker hurt afterwards!!

  • I got mine at my
28 week appointment and DH is always up to date on his shots because he travels a lot for govt work but I need to double check exactly when he had it. All of my immediate family have it or are willing to get it except my mom and brother so I need to talk to them again and make them realize how important that and the flu shot are.

    Anniversary

  • I was offered to get it at my 28 week appointment & let my OB know that I might get it during my 30 week. Insurance does not cover the vaccination is my only drawback.
  • I just had mine in Tuesday. My OB actually wrote me a prescription and told me to go to my pharmacy to get it. So that's what I did.

  • I just had it last week at 31 weeks. The midwife told me they recommend women getting it between 26 and 34 weeks.  She also recommended for anyone else who would be in a lot of contact with the baby to get it so my DH got it yesterday, and I'm trying to convince all of the grandparents.
  • I got the vaccine at my last appointment (28 weeks) and I was sick for about 2 days and now I'm better.  I had a fever, it was painful to move around, and my muscles hurt pretty bad and I slept all day and night (actually sleeping all day was a bonus).  I recommend getting it on a Friday so you have the weekend to recover.

Shoot, are they that bad? I think I'm getting mine at my appointment this afternoon. Poo.
  • I had a pretty strong reaction to mine, and the doctor said it might be because I just had a full dose of the vaccines about 5 years ago.  Mine reacted almost like an allergic reaction to a bug bite--got very large and swollen, red, hot, and painful to the touch.  I had to take Benadryl to get things to calm down.

All that said, I'd still get it a million more times to help pass on some protection to my baby.

  • They gave me mine last week at my 32 week appointment.  Both OB & Health Department told me that you should get it while pregnant so that the baby gets some benefit and protection for when it's born as that shot isn't given until 2 months.  All others that have not had a booster in 10 years that will have contact with baby need to get it also.  DH got his before DS1 was born 5 years ago so he doesn't need it this time around and DS1 is current on all shots as well.

Mine wasn't bad at all. I had a little bit of soreness and I had a small bump on my arm a few days later but that was it.

DH just got his on Sunday and he's been complaining about muscle pain ever since but I think he's exaggerating. He wasn't happy about getting it in the first place and kept putting it off so I kind of ambushed him at Rite Aid lol

  • Got mine yesterday. Husband will get his at the hospital. I was a little sore yesterday, but not too bad.
  • edited August 2014
The vax doesn't fully protect the adult for some time up to 2 weeks after the shot (you need to develop your immunity). This is the other reason the newest CDC recommendations say to get the shot during the 3rd Tri and not after the baby is born. Anyone who will spend significant time around the baby should get their shot at least 2 weeks before your due date. I get mine next Friday at my 32 week visit

  • So I did get mine yesterday afternoon. It wasn't so bad! I don't feel sick at all, just sore in the muscle at the site of the shot. It feels like someone punched me hard in the arm. Other than that, it was a cake walk!
