Talk to me about hiring a nanny in California

Has anyone hired  nanny in CA?  We need in home care for about 8 hrs/week, so basically a part-time sitter.   It seems that nanny agencies typically don't place people for less than 20 hrs/week.  Several people have recommended urbansitter.com and I am ok with trying to find someone through them.  I looked over the info on the nanny tax & it looks like we need to withhold social security & pay payroll taxes etc., but it also looks like you also might have to provide workman's comp for the employee?  My friend is my insurance agent & says that it would be covered under our homeowners.  I'm trying to simplify this process as much as possible, but be sure that we are legal.  Does anyone have any experience.  This is turning out to be a pain in the ass.

No experience personally, but you might get some good info on the Working Moms board if you post it over there.

  • You may want to do some checking but I believe if you are paying them less than $7,000 a year you don't have to file with the state. You can check with your accountant or through California Labor & Workforce Development Agency.

If you do have to file, I would highly reccomend using a program like @LizB8943‌. They walk you step by step through the process and they will help file most of the paperwork.
  • I checked on one of the services, but it was pretty pricey, about $800/year.   We'd probably only be paying out about 5-6,000/yr.  My accountant thought it was over kill,  was just wondering what everyone else's experience was.  Seems like a big PIA for such a small amt.
