The name Harvey for a girl?

My husband loves the name Harvey for a girl. I love it too... but am hesitant. I do love the nickname "Vee", which would work with the name. I'm just trying to get a sense of how people react to it. Any thoughts?

Not my cup of tea. But if you really love it, at the end of the day it's your kid.

  • I have a son named Harvey. I can't imagine it being a girls name.
  • Honestly, I really don't like it. I picture a middle aged lawyer in a bad suit. Sorry!

  • Yeah I hate that name for a girl
  • I don't like it. I can imagine all sorts of cruel playground taunts from that. If you like the nickname Vee, you could call her Vivian.

  • My husband and I really like a name for a girl that a lot of people might associate with a cow, not Bessie. We have decided not to share our name until birth because it is a name he and I both like, and we don't want to be swayed from sticking with what we both love. So, go with your gut and if you both agree then it sounds like you have your name. Harvey is a wonderful name! You decide if it is for your baby girl.

You seem like you might be partial to the name Harvey.
  • If there is a history to the name (family name, famous family member) then I can see it. But just because, I think it's a hard name! From the perspective of how hard school could be, other kids, teachers, she could constantly end up in boys gym, etc. Maybe give her a girlie first name and make this her middle name!?!

I like guessing games! Is it Annabelle?
    My guess is Claribel! ;-)
    Mine is Elsie!

As for Harvey. On a little girl - just no.
  • I'm a huge advocate for name your kid what you want, and supporter of "boys names for girls" (my daughter is Sawyer)
But I'm having a hard time getting behind Harvey for a girl -sorry

Sawyer is going to be a BIG SISTER!!

  • Sorry - not a fan of Harvey.
  • I totally think of Batman also. Unless it has some significance I think it's terrible. As others have said, there are a lot of names you can use to have the nn Vee.

  • I'm sorry, but it's a strong no for me!
  • The name was mentioned.. Haha. See, which is why I am not telling. People will say things that make you want to change your mind. But just because it isn't their cup of tea, doesn't mean it can't be yours!
  • I guess I'm the only one who thought of Steve Harvey :-/

    I don't like it.

Similar to what Pele does, I imagine what it would be like to hear my kids full name at high school or college graduation and whether or not they would be embarrassed to have it announced to crowd full of peers and strangers alike.
  • I like it. We have a similar girl name chosen and I think that it's cute. Now, I will also say that it sounds older... And most men's names from previous generations are hard to go unisex (George, frank, Fred, etc). Either way, if you two can agree on something, more power to you! I do the graduation test when choosing first and middle combined with our last name. That it the yelling at them because they are getting into trouble again test. ;)

  • Sorry. I'm with the others on this.  :-q

  • Harvey makes me think of Harvey Fierstein. I grew up with a boy's/unisex name and it was pretty difficult (especially before puberty) but I like it now. A better middle name would have helped when I was younger. I've known a Harley and I like that name for a girl.

  • Call me crazy, but when I hear Harvey I think of this:
    image

Seriously, it's your kiddo and you get to name him/her whatever the hell you love!  :-)

This is exactly what I thought. But it is not a bad name at all.

  • Harvey could be tough for a girl...Harley is similar and has a bit more of a feminine touch.
  • The name always makes me think of Harvey Milk.  Definitely thumbs down for a girl.

  • I hate when people are like "well if it's what you want, then I guess but it's NMS...."

There's a difference if you're not a fan of the name George or Michael or something but it's still a name that makes sense for a person. Harvey is so harsh and masculine, I guarantee if you polled 100 women none of them would rather their name was freaking Harvey. There's no debate on this. It's a terrible name for a girl
  • Oh the name game... It's so difficult and there is no pleasing everyone! I think it's important to consider long term effects of names: Harvey for a girl may lead to confusion in school/work as to her gender (on paper, not in person)...

Perhaps something more neutral like HARVARD (I think it's neutral but maybe not) or alter the spelling to something more feminine like HARVIE?

You should watch suits. Main character is a not so aged, attractive lawyer in a very nice suit named Harvey. That's what I think of first. So, not a fan.

For a pic of said sexy lawyer, Google Harvey Specter or Gabriel Macht. Yum.
I watch suits. Harvey specter is super hot but for some reason he's not what I associate the name with.

  • I am all about androgynous names, but I will have to agree with everyone that Harvey on a girl is a no go. I do like someone's suggestion of Harley though!

Since we are mentioning what we thought of when we heard Harvey- I thought of Sabrina the Teenage Witch (TV show from the 90s).

  • I'm like the pp who thinks of the character from the show Suits. Harvey is most certainly a boy in my mind. Sorry OP, but I would not want to make my daughter live through that during the awful tween years.
