The Great Breastfeeding Thread

Re: The Great Breastfeeding Thread

  • LO is 4 weeks old and I'm thinking it's probably safe to introduce a bottle now that BF is well established. I go back to work in 8 weeks so she will need to take a bottle by then. Any advice on how to start?

I've read that it's best to have someone else besides you give the bottle for the first time, so try having your SO feed LO a few ounces. Also try to pump around the same time LO takes a bottle so that you are not essentially skipping the feeding.

We are finding it best for me not to be around LO when it's bottle time. Yesterday I went for a walk, got and little sweaty and when my brother went to feed LO he wouldn't take the bottle. The minute I went across the room he settled down and drank just fine. I also have found I can't pump near him when he's feeding, he must smell it and fusses.

  • So when we do pump some before a feeding when we're engorged, can we save that milk or do we need to toss it since we aren't getting the fore and hind milk? It seems like such a waste to throw away the amount I get when I just pump to soften things up

Although it's certainly ideal to get fore and hind milk in one bottle I would still save all milk that I pumped. Keep in mind you can continue to add to a pumped bottle all day so when LO finished nursing if you aren't empty you could pump a little more into the same bottle.

  • A friend of mine mentioned that she wasn't sure if you could combine pumped milk, or something about it all having to be the same temperature, anyone know? Also can I save a bottle of pumped milk and reheat if LO doesn't finish it?

  • @TRyan86‌ I have a forceful letdown with both and had an oversupply with both but it self corrected at about 3 months with DS1.

At night I use cheap newborn daipers instead of nursing pads

  • Question for you ladies about breast milk and alcohol. I was planning on having my first pp drink tonight, a beer or two. What is the general rule you use in regards to drinking, and feeding LO, and pump and dump? I figure for just one or two beers it would be ok to pump and still save the bm, but wanted to get some thoughts!
    Lilypie Pregnancy tickers
  • @kdelgado03‌ I've been told one drink doesn't do much to affect your milk, but for each after you need at least 2 hours per drink before it's out of your milk. Some places online say just a standard 2 hours for each drink. There is a lot of different info out there, but the two above seems to be the most consistent of what I've been told by people and found online.

You don't have to pump and dump unless you need to pump bc you're engorged or trying to make sure you are keeping your supply up.

  • My areolas, not my nipples, are so sore! I think this is because DS is "gumming" my nipples. I don't think his tongue is over his lower gums, and it's extremely painful. Any advice?

  • Those of you who nurse while lying down at night... What about burping your LO?
  • Question...if you have a gassy baby and eat something that could cause gas (example pizza) ...how long do you have to pump before it's out if your system?

I burp him to the best of my ability or until I fall asleep lol. Most of the time he burps pretty quick.

  • @babybell22‌ Yes LO "sharts" just about everytime lol! No diaper rash or anything yet. Being EBF, it's just runny mustardy looking poop and not normally a lot of it either. I've cut a lot lf things out if my diet though to help his little tummy and digestive system.

My little guy had to have his tongue clipped fit a tongue tie because he couldn't stick it out.

I wondered about that, but the LC and his pedi say no tongue tie.

SIL and our two nieces are visiting today. I start nursing DD and the five year old niece is bewildered and starts asking me questions (SIL is in another room). "Is that a baby bottle?" I say no. "Is that part of your body?" I say yes. She asks if there's milk in there. I say yes. I try to explain how mammal babies eat and ask if she's ever seen puppies or kittens being fed by their mom. She says no, just continues to stand there, amazed/freaked out. Then she asks if I was at her house when she was born and if she ate like that. I said yes (I think SIL nursed her for 8 weeks or so).

So... should I just be grateful that my boys don't think anything of nursing since they've seen it and are used to it, or slightly annoyed that SIL hasn't explained BFing or talked about it? I just found it very odd that my niece was so mystified by it all. I was a little uncomfortable trying to explain it to her.

Or maybe I'll just laugh it off. ???

Definitely awkward but if a 5 yo has never had an opportunity to be around it I don't think it's a big deal they haven't explained it to her yet. It would have been nice if her mom was there to talk to her about it though!

I guess I just thought it was strange because we see them quite often and I figured she would have remembered my YDS nursing since only weaned a little over a year ago. Shrug. I definitely wish I'd been in the same room with SIL when it happened!

I had to explain to my 6 year old nephew when he was at my house. I saw him trying not to look.

I explained what I was doing and it was not a bad thing. I told him he was breastfeed as a baby. Which he didn't believe so I got my sister to confirm. Lol.

He was like I have never seen anything like that. But was totally cool after that and really paid it no attention to it

My heavy letdown/whatever else is it....is officially creating havoc on my life. Feeding LO is a nightmare half the time, she gets way too much milk and half way chokes, then screams and won't want to latch back on, but she is still hungry, so the screaming continues. It's a nightmare. I've tried leaning back/laying down when I feed her and that works half of the time. I'm officially taking myself off pumping for at least a week to try to get my boobs under control, and I'm going to try the nurse from just one side for a couple hours and then switch. If anyone else has any other tips, let me know. Feeding had me in tears yesterday and today from her screaming. :-/

My LO has a tough time with gas, so I have to make sure I burp him well or he's up fussing later until he can work it out himself.
  • Oh my LAWD, is this cluster feeding? She has literally eaten every single hour for at least 20 minutes and only slept for an hour, total, since 9:30 this morning. Mama just wants to eat some lunch and take a shower, baby!

I've been eating lactation cookies since I was in the hospital delivering DS2. Mom my made them for me and they are fantastic! Homemade Oatmeal raisin are my favorite cookie anyway. She added craisins to them also and man oh man they are yummy! I eat a few everyday. She makes a huge batch if dough for me. I keep it in the fridge and bake them as needed. Lots of lactation recipes on Pinterest.
