Frustrated, I've got so much going on right now and my drs office calls to tell me I failed my test! Now I have to do the 3 hour test next Thursday. Anything over 130 is failing, I scored 145 anyone else fail?
I haven't taken it yet this time, but with my oldest daughter, I failed the 1 hour and passed the 3 hour; I think it's definitely not uncommon to fail the 1 hour, from what I've heard from others. The 3 hour test does suck though, so I'm sorry you have to deal with that.
I'm sorry Both times my sister failed the first test but passed the 3 hr one. Hopefully you will too. I haven't taken it yet but my OB said just to play it safe that I should follow my husbands diet (he's diabetic) for that week. I laughed and said you don't want me to follow his. He laughed and said oh he's one of those..ok so follow the diet he's supposed to have haha

I got the call today that I failed mine too-got 149 : (
I will say that I failed it in two other pregnancies (maybe 3, can't remember) and every time I passed the three-hour! So there is hope. I'm just annoyed that I have to spend the morning of my first day of vacation time next week getting poked for blood, lol.
Sorry you failed, Fingers crossed for the 3 hour!!
Can I ask a question? Maybe it's my warped point of view as being a type 1, but I don't really understand why folks will skip breakfast or eat differently than normal on the day of or days leading up to their test. I mean, if everything is working as it should be what you eat shouldn't matter. I know that, for me, when I eat lower carb my numbers tend to be lower but that doesn't mean that I'm not Type 1 - I still have it, just happen to have a normal reading. I guess I feel like I'd rather just eat normal and see what happens because people with diabetes can very often get "normal" blood sugar readings. I'd almost feel like if I ate differently and passed...did I really pass or was it just because of what I ate? I mean, If I had GD, I'd want to know.
Sorry you failed, Fingers crossed for the 3 hour!!

I wondered about this too. My OB told me no eating after midnight the night before and then I took the test at 8am. I tried to eat normally the day before.
Sorry that happened Kristy. FX things go well for the 3 hour test.
Sorry your 1 hour didn't go well. I have no experience with this personally, but as other posters have said, I've known people who failed the 1H and passed the 3H.
FX'd you're one of those!

I guess not eating the morning of is so they can see your fasting levels, but they still are going to be lower than if you had eaten, obviously. I feel like it's almost like cheating or something?! I don't know, like I said, warped perspective as a T1.

That's how I kinda see it too. If you skip breakfast and pass it's based only on your glucose levels from the drink, but obviously you are going to be eating more than just that on a regular day. It feels like cheating to me too!
FWIW, @missnacholover, my OB told me to eat like I normally do the day of. She did mention to not go crazy at IHOP with the sugar and carbs, but certainly told me not to fast! The last time I was pregnant, I did the 3 hour (it was the only choice at my OB at that time), and for that one you do have to fast. That one felt like cheating!
Sorry you failed, Fingers crossed for the 3 hour!!

I agree.. I was actually shocked that my OB suggested following my DH's diet It def does seem like cheating.
~Nov14 Moms November Siggy Challenge: CELEBRATION!! ~
Because of my family history, my OB told me I had a really high chance of failing the 1 hour. She didn't think it would be an accurate representation, so I'm skipping right to the three hours.
I just want to know, so I can take the appropriate measures.
Failing sucks, but fingers crossed you do better on the next one.
I can kind of see the "cheating" angle if your doctor tells you to eat normally and you don't, in an attempt to alter the test results.
However, if you are specifically told to fast for 12 hours or whatever then I would assume that they are taking that into consideration. Like if fasting causes your numbers to be lower (I don't know anything about blood sugar levels but according to this thread that seems to be the case) then they are taking that into account when viewing your test results. Right? Maybe my logic is wrong but that makes sense to me!

Yeah, I mean obviously do what your doctor says! I'm not a doctor and I don't play one on TV.
I am sorry you failed the 1hr test. I am sure you pass the 3hr one with flying colours.
Question: do you have to sit and wait at the the lab of the whole 3hrs, or can you go and come back. I can't imagine having to sit and wait in the germ infested lab for 3 hrs.
it could be that it's because you're getting such a high dose of sugar with the test that anything else you eat can skew the numbers because now you're body is trying to break down even more sugar within that hour time frame and it might not be able to that quickly.
~Nov14 Moms November Siggy Challenge: CELEBRATION!! ~
I think you sit and wait. For the one hour test, I drank the drink, saw my doctor, then read a book until my one hour timer went off. Then they took blood and told me they would call if I failed.
I haven't had mine yet - I'm sorry you had to deal w/ that. FX'd for your 3 hours test!
Just a note to those that haven't had it - my nurse said to watch ALL of my sugars that day, natural or otherwise. even fruit - I would not have really included fruit in the mix. So I won't be eating any sugar AT ALL That day!
Sorry you failed, Fingers crossed for the 3 hour!!

It's b/c of all the sugar in the drink they give you.

I don't understand why they would have you NOT eat normally. This seems like it would skew the results.
I've had four kids, the last pregnancy I did have GD but it was controlled by insulin during pregnancy and everything was yippity skippity after and during.
Also, everyone should do as their MD/MW orders them to do. I know you're just relaying info from your office but the way you worded it could be read as a direction.
And fwiw: my MW office skips the one hour now because it's not as reliable as three hour. Also, they suggest eating completely normal so the results are based on how your body absorbs and releases the sugars with your normal diet.
Sorry you failed your 1 hr. test. I have mine tomorrow morning (this is my third child and first time doing the glucose test). I haven't been told anything other than I need to fast for 12 hrs. Not sure how that helps the accuracy of the test though. Am I supposed to buy the drink prior to going tomorrow? Does the lab provide it for me? (Does it make a difference that I'm in Ontario?) Good luck with the 3 hrs test. I'm sure it will all work out (I know, easier said than done).

You are right! I wasn't trying to give direction, however I do trust my OB so I'm going to do what she says. I guess that's why they have the degree's and not me. It was meant as helpful advice I was passing along from a trusted source so whoever chooses to take it can do so. I'm sure that's what you meant to do by saying your mid wife recommended that you eat normally. All I know is the drink packs tons of sugar - that it it's job. So anyone who is going to pack one tons of sugar after that is asking to fail the 1 hour. Plus I took it as - don't eat a head of grapes or a box of ice cream sandwiches before going in. She didn't tell me not to eat lol I'm more so just watching my sugar for my own sanity.
However, I, too, failed my 1 hour last pregnancy, but did great on the 3 hour.
I am not wasting my time with the 1 hour this time around, so I will just do the 3 right away. And... we should make the best of it. At the clinic I went to I told them I had low BP and was afraid that I would pass out. So I got a private exam room and I spent the 3 hours lying around on the table, reading books and magazines. I pretended it was a lazy spa morning. (Lame, but true. Why not? It's all about attitude.)
Sorry you didn't pass. FX that you pass the 3 hour!
My doctor told me not to fast. I just couldn't eat/drink anything between the time I drank the drink and had my blood drawn. I ate my normal breakfast and passed
Just got the call that I failed too! Fuckity fuck! My dr had warned me I might especially with two placentas. Ugh. So now onto the 3hr. For those keeping track the three hr test is actually FOUR hrs of your life you don't get back. They take your blood then give you the drink then once an hr for 3 hrs you get stabbed. You are not allowed to leave the lab once the test started. Did I mention fuckity fuck:) good luck to everyone. Mine is next Thursday ugh.
Sorry you failed, Fingers crossed for the 3 hour!!

Do they test you before you take the drink?
When I did it last time I had to fast. As soon as I arrived they checked my blood then again an hour after taking the drink. I ended up getting poked in the exact spot both times because it was the Molly vein they could get. I don't know how it will happen this time because I am with a new ob. I am hoping I can take the test next week because I start my new job next Friday and don't have the time to take off.
I failed my 1 hr. I went in for the 3 hr and couldn't keep the drink down after the first hour blood draw. I have to go back Saturday and do it all I've again. I'm hopin I can keep the drink down this time. My 1 hr number was 138 and if I can't keep down the drink this second time my OB said they will just consider me diabetic
Re: Failed one hour glucose test :(
I think the test has about a 20% "failure" rate, but only 4-10% (depending on who you ask) fail the 3 hour.
Hoping you're one of the lucky ones!
