I don't know why, but I own a robe, but have ALWAYS referred to it as a "house coat" and my "slippers" are "house shoes". My DH is always joking with me about that! He is team robe and slippers.

My grandmother wears these. She isn't obese, and she isn't old as far as grandma's go! LOL

I voted SS because I know the difference, but I still use the words interchangeably.
