Monday confession....

My baby has had a bite or two before sweets. I know a lot people are here are anti cake before one and etc. But I figured this board could use something controversial.

1)She doesn't get sweets all the time, rare treats,
2)usually for special events like Great Grandma's birthday, resident of the month etc.
3)I needed to give her sweets before the grandparents did. Wasn't a battle I was going to be able to fight.
4)We eat a lot of regular adult veggies and some meats that we cook at home. Hardly any processed baby stuff.

Alright. let the cake wars begin.....

  • @beernifer, it gets really tough when other people enjoy watching little ones get a nice piece of cake. I don't let her have too much frosting, just more of the soft cake part and sometimes a lick of frosting. But the joy on other people's faces, well, it's a good feeling.

  • I think cake is fine in moderation. I have not given DS any yet and probably won't until his first bday but that's just me.

I kind of feel the same way, not a big deal. However the 2 days that we were on the boat dd had some goldfish cookies, like 3 total she had a hard time sleeping those nights... Too much sugar? I said no more until her birthday. We will see if it makes a difference.
  • Well if TB would allow me to upload photos (which it doesn't anymore) I would post a nice photo of LO licking a chocolate Mickey Mouse at Easter.  He has it for about a minute.  Only sugar he has ever tasted/

I made the mistake of splurging for a nutter butter in front of Jo. She decided she needed to try it. So I took a pic and took it back. Lol. She is such a foodie already....image

  • We've given Jude lots of treats. When he had HFM he literally would not eat anything but Popsicles because he wouldn't suck from the sores in his mouth. He had some otter pops but mostly fruit/veggie pops. But he's had tastes of ice cream, cake, milkshakes. It's really not a big deal to me. He's eating mostly healthy all the time anyway.

  • @crunchymama11, I don't disagree with you. And up until recently my goal was a year.

Dh and I have been talking though, we don't need to keep sweets in the house. This way it's not as tempting. generally I won't buy any, but he's been shopping a bit more. We will see how it goes, especially when I'm gone for a year.

  • I must say that the Easter treat was for picture purposes and I doubt he actually got chocolate in his mouth. I haven't done sugar since and my family is always trying to sneak it.  That drives me crazy.  I also about lost it when he was in the ER for his tongue gash and the DR. gave him a regular sugary Popsicle before giving him the Pedialyte pop.

  • @crunchymama11 and all the other nosy bumpies....
It's not 100% official yet so I haven't said too much. More than likely I will be getting to play in a pile of rocks. When I know more, Ill try to message @quartermisses so she can pass on info. In the mean time I've been keeping it fairly on the down low and enjoying my time and making arrangements as need be. This also means letting go of certain "rules" because they will soon be out of my control.

  • @crunchymama11 its ok. I need to say something sooner than later. Cause otherwise everyone will be like wtf, especially with fb. Don't worry, I do have a few more months to enjoy my baby girl before the next adventure starts.

  • I was going to say that @Snowboarderbritt‌. I know lots of picky babies!

  • I gave her a bite of cake with no frosting at a birthday. My mother though.... She's always giving her something. She watches her for free while I work, so I don't complain. I just give a disproving look.

  • Carmen has had cake, ice cream, and other things she probably shouldn't have. I'm constantly catching DH sneaking her bits of sweets.

She will have cake at her birthday but she won't be allowed to eat much more than a few bites. She can learn moderation when it comes to treats. She loves fruits and veggies though (and I've made DH feed her puréed peas after catching him giving her sweets!)
  • The first sweets H had were last weekend, she had a taste of my birthday cake. She made more of a mess than anything, but it was a party!
  • We are on team I've cream. The 2 times we got ice cream out a let her have a few licks. She has tasted whip cream and unfortunately a glob of frosting...lol not sure why if a baby is crying at a party 1st instinct is to put a finger of frosting in their mouth ;)

  • LO had some some snow cone on a few occasions, and my dad likes to feed him ice cream.

Other than that, he has had a few bites of sweets here and there. I'm not worried about it!

@Snowboarderbritt‌ my DD is picky too. And dramatic. She will refuse to swallow and literally gag herself until she chokes if she doesn't like something. I have actually had to carry her out of two restaurants now because she caused such a scene over her food :(
Oh man!!! That's rough lady. My LO also will gag when she doesn't like something and store food in her mouth. I just avoid giving her different foods when we are out, just in case.

I've given LO a taste of vanilla ice cream, and about 15 min after that she surprisingly ate all of her zucchini. I don't want to make a habit out of it but a taste here and there is fine IMO.

  • We gave DS some cake this weekend for the first time. Cake only no icing. I felt like we should try it incase he's weird and hates it.

He hasn't had cake yet, but ice cream is a different story thanks to Grandpa image
He looks exactly like a grandpa should look. I love it!!!

DS has also had a bit of ice cream and wasn't overly thrilled about it - however, he had a bit of my slushy a few weekends ago at a county fair and OMG. Best. Thing. Ever. lol

  • DS has definitely had a taste of ice cream the few times DH and I have gone out for ice cream.  We're talking about tiny bites...probably not even a full spoonful.  I'm not at all worried about it.  No cake though, until his first birthday (only because I want that to be the first time he has cake).

DS has tried sweets. I gave him a taste of icing at a one year old b-day party and he LOVED my homemade key lime pie popsicle (I didn't make it).
