My baby has had a bite or two before sweets. I know a lot people are here are anti cake before one and etc. But I figured this board could use something controversial.
1)She doesn't get sweets all the time, rare treats,
2)usually for special events like Great Grandma's birthday, resident of the month etc.
3)I needed to give her sweets before the grandparents did. Wasn't a battle I was going to be able to fight.
4)We eat a lot of regular adult veggies and some meats that we cook at home. Hardly any processed baby stuff.
Alright. let the cake wars begin.....

She had some tastes of sweet things here and there--I just try to not make them a "big deal" or make them routine. Ice cream with grandpa, yes. Dessert after every dinner, no. I kinda agree with crunchy, in that we have never given her a glad of juice and we don't keep cookies/crackers around the house just for day-to-day life. And i dont gice her "food rewards" for good behavior. But she does get to taste "good" (I.e., unhealthy) food on occasion because I don't want her to be one of those girls who goes off to college from a strict home and gains forty pounds her freshman year of college because she has never learned to control herself and find her internal set point around junk food.
To me, it is all a balance. Humans are hard wired to crave sweet things because sweet = not poisonous. Breastmilk is very sweet and chock full of sugar. So I am not worried about tastes of treats "creating" a sweet tooth where none existed before. But I do try to limit such things to occasions when it might "make a memory" (for lack of a better phrase), as opposed to random snacking on cookies in front of the TV.

She will have cake at her birthday but she won't be allowed to eat much more than a few bites. She can learn moderation when it comes to treats. She loves fruits and veggies though (and I've made DH feed her puréed peas after catching him giving her sweets!)
Other than that, he has had a few bites of sweets here and there. I'm not worried about it!
I've given LO a taste of vanilla ice cream, and about 15 min after that she surprisingly ate all of her zucchini. I don't want to make a habit out of it but a taste here and there is fine IMO.
