"I didn't know I was pregnant".

Has anyone else seen the show, "I didn't know I was pregnant"?  I saw it on t.v. yesterday & today.  I just can't comprehend being pregnant, carrying a baby to term & delivering without ever having any idea I was pregnant.

In some of the shows the women have the babies while standing & the baby just falls to the floor & they stand staring at it. Others have had them in the toilet & say they felt "relieved" because they thought they were just constipated, until they stood up and saw the baby.  That one also raises many questions for me.  Who in the heck has been so constipated that having a baby felt like a normal release?

  • I know somebody who didn't know until they were nearly 7 months, she was a teen when it happened but still... I guess denial can be pretty strong

I honest-to-god used to work with a woman who didn't know she was preggo WITH TWINS until she delivered them at 7 months in the ER after going to the ER for "appendicitis".  We didn't necessarily get along that well so I never had an appropriate opportunity to ask her my WTF questions about that.  She also was not the brightest crayon in the box.

But i'm with you - how can people not know something is up?  Even for having a fairly easy pregnancy so far with no m/s at all, i still can tell theres something different about how I feel and my body in general.  Are people just that out of tune with their bodies?
  • Honestly, I could believe that I wasn't pregnant. (I am... 17 weeks along) I have had no morning sickness, weight gain that I can attribute to bad eating, and most kicks I would think were just gas. The only thing that reminds me that I'm still pregnant most days is that I haven't had a period since March. Mine are pretty irregular, too, so I probably wouldn't question it.
  • We had a girl from my BMB with my second that didn't know she was pregnant and ended up doubled over in pain on her living room floor, called 911, and ended up having her baby right there on the floor. She was totally in shock and was by no means trying for a third.

Her second wasn't very old, she was still nursing, felt only a few kicks because she had anterior placenta, and never really showed because she had a heavier frame and had only gained a few lbs.

  • I can't imagine getting to third tri and not knowing. The kicks were crazy then, especially when you can watch them from the outside!

But right now at 18w3d, if I didn't know, I wouldn't know. I get nervous for every appointment because I don't feel pregnant at all and have not felt movement yet. Heck, I'm still even sleeping on my tummy! I'm plus size so while I can feel my fundus if I press down, if I wasn't feeling for it among my tummy rolls I probably wouldn't notice.

  • I don't understand it either. This is different, but a girl I work with went to her dr because she wasn't feeling well, peed in a cup and told her she was pregnant. They sent her for an u/s to date the pregnancy and they told her...congrats you're having a girl! She was about 5 months along....

  • A family member of DH had cancer early in her 20's and was told she would NEVER have babies. She didn't have a period and didn't use birth control for over 10 years! She felt strange and went to the Dr and was 5mnths along. I can fully understand not knowing or it even crossing your mind in this case.
  • I have a friend from high school that has found out she was pregnant at 6 months twice now. She still bleeds regularly. She only went in to test because her stomach started getting round. I would be scrambling trying to get all the baby shit together imagine? That's too much of a surprise for me.

    Agreed. Same Situtation
  • I've always wondered if there is some psychosomatic component to these cases. This is not based on science in any way, but I wonder if someone is in such denial of a pregnancy if their body just supresses the symptoms?

I know a girl who had an almost full term baby without knowing. I saw her out about a week before and I would have never guessed that she was pregnant at all, let alone 8-9 months along.

  • My good friend since high school and I were talking ( I was pregnant at the time with my oldest) and she asked me what it felt like to feel the baby move because she was having weird feelings in her stomach. Needless to say I picked her up, made her pee on a stick that turned instantly positive. Since she had no prenatal care and was thinking she was feeling the baby move we went to the hospital. Turns out she was 20 weeks and due two weeks before me. We both have little boys that are buddies. Sometimes things are just weird.

With my last pregnancy I had absolutely no symptoms and no positive tests until I was a few months along & in the hospital, so I can see how it is possible. I didn't have regular periods at all (one every few months) and never got ANY of the symptoms I did with this pregnancy. Very in tune with my body, simply nothing noticeable changed. I lost them (twins) at the end of my first trimester though, so I don't have reasoning for the further along stuff. =/

  • I can see how it's possible for a while and especially if someone has irregular periods or is very overweight. But I can't help but feel like a lot of them are just in extreme denial. This one took me a while because I was worried I'd miscary again and didn't want to get my hopes up. But now? At 21 weeks? Guh... I can't imagine. If they felt like me, they'd have to be pretty dang unhealthy to start with to think this was normal O_o

Edit: This show also highlights the need for quality sex education. Cause some of these girls just seem to have no idea what causes babies.

    But don't you know if you tell teenagers to not have sex they never will???? 8-}
    Slight amount of sarcasm here....

My friend employee didn't know she was pregnant, she called my friend in November and said she had a baby and will be taking time off for maternity. The funny thing is, my friend could see her getting bigger and asked several times if she was pregnant. Maybe she was in denial, but I don't understand how someone doesn't know she's pregnant.

    THIS!
  • I get the denial aspect of it, but I feel like for some women it's normal to not get a period for a long time so that might not be the best indication for some women. Or if they're breastfeeding and haven't had their period return just yet. Combine that with placenta previa and they wouldn't feel any movement and if her uterus is sitting just right, they might not get noticeably bigger anyways.

It seems like a stretch and I think it's incredibly rare, but I don't think it's always about not knowing how babies are made or that the women are stupid.

  • I just feel like as a woman, to carry a baby full term and not once during those let's say 10 months do you visit your gyn and not once do you buy a pregnancy test out of curiosity because you know either a) the condom popped or b) he didn't pull out, something is SERIOUSLY wrong. And especially If you have regular periods and all of a sudden it hasn't come for 4 months.... I would be running to my doctor. I understand most women only go yearly for Pap smears but come on!! I go to my gyn every 6 months if I can, sometimes 3. Women tend to have an STD and not show any symptoms for 1 and also what about routine HIV testing? Especially if you're sexually active which clearly these women are. I don't get it. Not faulting the women who are more on the heavy side and have irregular periods, although I still think there's should be some type of connection with your body.

Just my personal opinion. Never watch that show I just get frustrated!
  • I actually have known someone within my family to not know she was pregnant with her fourth child. Thankfully, she was born healthy, but her doctor said that with certain medical conditions, you can convince yourself you're not pregnant and your body just sort of follows suit. I don't know how much truth their is to that, but the family member has been diagnosed with mental illness.
  • I guess I could sort of understand if you were already overweight. But even then, I'd be thinking I had a tumor with as hard and weird this thing feels.
  • Not assuming at all! Just stating my opinion. Most women on that show if not all only have one partner. That was just an example I used. Me personally I have one partner but I still go every six months if I can because I like to just make sure everything's working properly. It could be because I'm in my mid 20s so my way of thinking may be a tad different than a lot of moms on this thread.
  • I go every year. I never heard of going more often, unless something's wrong. I think it's a combo of women who are really unhealthy (not necessarily obese), women who are out of tune with their bodies, women who know something is wrong but are afraid to go to the doctor, a few who truly don't know they are pregnant, and liars. They are either lying to others to to themselves. Wow, that sounds harsh, but I think many of them get into a situation and they hope it just goes away.

Can we just start a campaign or something to teach young women that if you are having heterosexual sex (protected or not) then there is always a chance that you are pregnant. Go ahead and check really quick to be sure first before assuming you have like really long lasting mono that causes strange abdominal-only weight gain.

  • I only go to the gyno once a year unless there's a problem. Ghost monkey was actually saying today that if you go to the dr when there isn't anything wrong you're just raising medical costs for everyone. Just an FYI. I can see someone not realizing they're pregnant if they have periods rarely.

  • I suppose I could see this until maybe the halfway point or so. Perhaps even later if you have PP or an anterior placenta. Maybe you had zero symptoms. Women that are overweight often don't show until much, much later. I get it.

But, I'm sorry, I literally do not believe women that say that didn't know until they were 40 weeks and delivering. Once you reach 3rd tri and even closer to the end, the movements just become SO powerful and occasionally painful. I'm not saying everyone feels them to the same degree, but to not feel anything is a load of bs if you ask me.

I know I'm pregnant because I just ate pickled banana peppers, pickled herring, marshmallow fluff, and chocolate milk.

If you're having sex, pregnancy shouldn't be a surprise.
  • I just feel like as a woman, to carry a baby full term and not once during those let's say 10 months do you visit your gyn and not once do you buy a pregnancy test out of curiosity because you know either a) the condom popped or b) he didn't pull out, something is SERIOUSLY wrong. Um... maybe I'm wrong, but I know I only go every 12 months. So assuming I didn't get regular periods and this was a known issue and had already had my annual, I can't say I would be running to the gyno because something was wrong.

I mean, I had my son in April 2013 and didn't go back to the gyno until this April. And I didn't feel a need to in between.

Also, I feel like you're assuming that all of these women have multiple partners and should therefore be getting regular STD testing. Since I only have sex with my husband, I don't feel the need to be tested for STDs.

I mean... am I the only one who doesn't go to the gyno every 6 months when not pregnant?
Uhm, I only go once a year. The only time I went more than that was after an abnormal PAP.
  • Wait whaaaaaat the? There is an actual show about this? :-??

  • I go once a year and I'm in my mid 20s. I see no reason to go more often unless I was having an issue.

She knew enough to wonder about those weird movements but not enough to get her own pregnancy test just to see? Crazy...
She had gone to the doctors a few times when she was about a month pregnant to get her blood work done for medication she needed for her thyroid. They do a pregnancy test every time just to make sure. The test came up negative and her and her boyfriend had broke up so she never gave it a second thought. She was also on birth control and didn't have periods. She was already overweight and didn't notice any weight change and she had large breasts so she noticed no change in them either. Her only symptom was the fluttering feeling in her stomach. She had only felt in just a few times before she tested.
  • Yeah, its really hard for me to comprehend.

It happened to one of my best friends. I remember She was at my baby shower in October for my daughter who was due in December and she was saying that she wasnt sure if she wanted any more kids. She went to the ER in early November for stomach pains and found out she was pregnant with a girl due in January.  Our girls are now close friends because they are only a month apart but i just cant understand how she didnt know until she was almost 7 months along. Thats so odd to me.  She said she never had regular periods and that her anterior placenta must have blocked the kicks.  She did look like she was gaining weight but not terribly.  And she wasnt plus size, normal sized.
