Re: "I didn't know I was pregnant".

  • When I was in high school, my BFF was about 7 months pregnant with twins before she found out. She had them four weeks later. she did not tell her mom until she delivered. hers was partial denial, partial not understanding how things worK.

  • I had a similar thing happened junkie. My friend growing up got pregnant at 13 by an older teen she met on a chat line. The first and only time they ever met :( She said she didn't know until a few weeks before she had the baby, which I believe because she was only 13. Her mom got a call one day that her 13 yr old daughter just delivered a healthy baby boy (she had no idea she was pregnant). Thankfully all worked out & her aunt who had always wanted a baby but couldn't have one adopted him. He's now 16 & they're trying to figure out how to tell him that his cousin is actually his mom.

  • I have watched this show sometimes because I get such a kick out of it.  But yes, it does boggle my mind.  Although I have zero scientific evidence to back it up, I do have to wonder if it isn't a "mind over matter" type thing.  Like pregnancy never crosses their mind...or they rule it out for one reason or another...and so their body responds accordingly.

The only reason I think this could even be a remote possibility is because I am currently reading Ina May's Guide to Childbirth and she talks A LOT about mind over matter in labor (things like envisioning your cervix opening and then it does, or being so mentally afraid that your labor actually slows or stops), so I imagine it could work for pregnancy denial as well.

This is a good point because it does work the other way around as well. We found out today that a girl from my pregnancy group in town who really and truly believed she was pregnant - no period, distended stomach, she even felt movement! - wasn't after all at her elective ultrasound. She has had a lot of trouble getting pregnant (but can't afford IVF right now) so the doctor thinks it was psychosomatic. They did do blood and urine tests that came back negative but she was so sure until that ultrasound (thinking she was just going to be one of those women that tests negative). I am still having trouble believing it but the mind is a very powerful thing.

  • I have a "friend" who "didn't know" she was pregnant until she gave birth in hall. Although she tells you bathroom (more on that below). In her case, it was denial.

7 years ago she had her kids taken away for the final time a few days after #3 was born. She has a history of depression and anxiety... and some serious anger issues at times. She refused to be medicated at all back then.

Flash forward, she is divorced and marries another man. We all see a post on FB that she is a mommy again. I get a message begging for baby stuff so they can bring their baby home. They live solely off his SSI... And it was near te end of the month. So they had no money. I found out 5 days prior that I was pregnant with #5. Anyway, I am an hour away. I pack up stuff for them (with the condition that I need it returned when I have my baby), a friend goes to her place to clean up the mess left by giving birth... Mom says she gave birth in the bathroom and she had no clue till baby was in the toilet. I am told the mess told a different story. Either way, one of the conditions for her being allowed to keep this baby was for her to be medicated, classes, and home checks. So baby is home, but every now and again she will be talking about things and make a comment that makes you wonder if she knew on some level and was in denial or if she denied knowing out of fear the baby would be taken.

  • This show fascinates me too! I was never quite able to comprehend how a woman just doesn't know... and now that I am actually pregnant, I have an even more difficult time understanding it. I have a lot of the "complicating factors" that the women on the show often do: overweight already, irregular periods, was on birth control when I got pregnant, morning sickness was not significant.

I personally had not had a period in the month of March (and had even taken a pregnancy test that month after seeing SO on V-day, test came beck negative) and had started a new birth control the same month thinking it would regulate my cycle since I had missed my period that month. Saw my SO for literally 24 hours in April (yes, I know, it just takes one time lol), and within a month was feeling nauseous and exhausted. I was stressed out with a lot of personal crap and work stuff and for the first few days attributed the feeling sick and tired to that. But when my period still didn't come in April, I thought it was best to go see the Gynecologist! She didn't think I was pregnant either... thought it could be a thyroid problem or PCOS. But sure enough, BFP! Definitely think better sex education and just common sense to be attuned to your body and go to the doctor when something is off would have helped a lot of the cases on the show!

Also, when Im just lounging around on the bed watching TV or browsing the web on my iPad, I often lay on my stomach, but ever since 12 weeks, I can feel pressure in my abdomen that wasn't there before! How do none of these women notice things like this - at the very least I would worry that I had a tumor growing inside of me or something! LOL.

  • I don't know, this is my first so I really don't know what 3rd trimester is like but I watched a couple episodes today and the one girl lost a lot of weight by taking diet pills which were told would cause her to have irregular periods.  She waited a couple months but finally went to the doctor to get her blood drawn, but the test came back negative so she didn't think anything of it.  It's definitely crazy, but I can't really judge them because I don't know them.  Two of the women had multiple children so they knew what pregnancy was like.
    It's a GIRL!!

  • I hate that I can contribute a story to this and I feel slightly embarrassed.  My cousin (she was I believe 41 at the time) went to the hospital for what she thought was appendicitis.  She ended up delivering a healthy 5 lb baby boy.  This was her 4th child.  She was overweight and they contributed that to her not feeling the baby kick or punch. When we all saw her with a new born we were like WTF.

Unfortunately some how the kid got the nick name "Oops" to.
