Re: The SS "Is this normal?" Thread

  • DH and I are not connecting anymore. Or relationship has really been suffering since the arrival of LO. I asked him why it was hard for him to show me affection and he didn't answer. We have both been stressed but I am sad. I hope things can get back to somewhat normal for us. We had a whole two hours to ourselves today and we didn't even cuddle...I'm worried about us. He doesn't seem very happy lately.

  • @JmeJoLee83‌ - I am sorry :(. Having a baby is a huge adjustment maybe he is having a harder time adjusting and over time he will get back to normal.

DH ans I had this same conversation the other day, except I'm the one not showing affection. It really helped for both of us to get off our chest what was bothering us and promise to work on it. We have been trying to spend a little more time together ans engaged with each other rather than on our phones, tb, etc. It seems to be helping a little. If you need to talk, I'm here. Hope things get better!

@babygabe614‌ I wish my 3 week old slept during the day. He takes one two to three hour nap and maybe 15 min here and there, but rarely. What do you dress your lo in under the sleep sack? Henry hates having his arms swaddled so I have to leave those out.
I put her in a diaper and onesie underneath. We do arms-in because she scratches the hell out of her face if her hands are free.

  • I think this has been asked on a thread prior, but I can't remember. LO has white residue on her tongue, first I thought it was milk residue but now I'm not so sure, I tried to wipe it off with my finger and nothing came off. She's gott a small white patch on her inner lip that looks like peeling skin too. She's not fussing while BFing, no issues sucking on a paci or bottle, and I have no symptoms of thrush. So is this normal? Maybe I'm just being a paranoid FTM lol.

Also @lest12‌ we were prescribed them but idk if I'm going to give them to her, my mom BFed me an my sister in the 90s and had never heard of this so I think it's a new recommendation?

This is how it started for us. And then it got worse. Even with him on meds. We are just now seeing some improvement after 2 weeks. And it eventually got my breasts so i am now EPing. I'd say go get treatment now before it gets worse and harder to get rid of.
  • @JmeJoLee83‌ I can totally understand as my DH and I had similar convos this past week. I just feel like he gives all his attention and affection to our daughter. I totally understand but at the same time I feel sad. He joked and asked me if I was jealous. I told it's not a jealousy thing, but I need some reassurance and affection too. It has improved a little since and I have to make extra effort to make it happen.

He also asked me what we would have done if we didn't have our LO. He said he really misses the times that we spend watching movies and travelling, and when we used to go drinking and make a very strong cup of coffee. I know he is stressed out too. I told him that this stage doesn't last forever. I think we just both need some encouragement and I am glad that we have each other for support and not going through this alone.

@JulieSmiles, my LO sneezed quite a bit from day 1, even in the hospital where we kept moving her, worried it was from the draft of the AC vent! The nurses said it was normal and at our 2-week appt., the pediatrician confirmed its totally normal and a reflex at this young age... (LO is 3 weeks and still sneezin')!
We also have a little grunter and growler over here... Haven't asked the doc if this is 'normal', but judging by the growling babies "raising their hands" on this board, I'm assuming it's fairly normal!
  • @Babywear‌ I want to know too since I am going on a trip in a couple of weeks. I plan on bringing extra pumped milk in case she gets fussy or hungry. My LO hates being strapped in a carseat so it's a bit concerning.
  • Does your LO bf, burp/fart, poop and pee, spit up a ton and want to eat again? I feel like she is emptying out and forcing me to switch boobs every half hour the past couple hours. Help?

Sounds like a growth spurt. My little piglet definitely goes through weeks where he constantly eats. He's bottle fed though.

She is 5 and a half weeks, got her first growth spurt at 4 weeks...maybe it is just never gonna end...

My LO just finished hers and it was a nightmare! I BF her so she pretty much chewed my nipples off... Not that I have time to pump anyway since she was constantly on my boobs. She was super fussy and pretty much screamed two third of the day. It lasted about 5 days. She started a few days early so at about 5.5 week.

@nutmegs8 that made me irrationally jealous! 1.5 to 2 hours was how often my LO ate before growth spurts! Now it's 45 minutes to an hour in between, max. I think bottles may be more filling and/or efficient. I really need to find a way to pump more!

  • @BMaidPlanner‌ yeah, I gave up on BFing and am now EPing. I feel better knowing he is getting plenty. I feel like we don't spend but half the day eating now. Plus he's not chewing off my nipples every 30 minutes.
  • lest12lest12 member
@BMaidPlanner‌ - my LO normally cluster feeds every night before bed, then either he won't go down, or just wakes up every 2 hours all night.

Tonight I left a bottle for him and went out to dinner, scared shit of what he works be like when I came home, lol. He was great! DH have him the extra 2 ounces I had left, he passed out and slept 4 hours waking only for a dream feed.

Either it's a fluke or I'm going to be really upset... it feels like he's tied to my boob every night but the bottke filed him up and put him right out. So frustrating!

@lest12 so how many ounces did he have from the bottle total?

Also, agreed. It is so frustrating! The two nights she has had a bottle then later breastfeeds she spits up a ton.

I'm so clueless about all this.

@bmaidplanner - 6oz total. 4 and then 2 to top him off right before bed.

Is gripe water something I should talk to the dr about before trying? LO is a little fussy/gassy, I'd like to see if it helps... can I just try it?

    image        image

  • @lest12 @yellowbird219‌ Yes. Try gripe water. I gave it to LO daily for about 2 weeks to beat his gas. He would scream during every poop. It worked wonders. Dr said it was fine since it's all natural and really just goes straight through them.
  • LO is FF with Enfamil Gentlease, and still seems to have a lot of trouble with gas and pooping. He screams, gets fussy, and is clearly in pain. We burp him after every ounce, and we only get a burp maybe half the time. Bicycle leg motions don't seem to help either. I've tried the Little Remedies Gas Drops, since it's what I had on hand, but they don't seem to do anything. Are other brands of gas drops different? Any recommendations or other things I could try to make it easier for him?

    ---Stuck in the Box---

My LO was having the same problems and was on Gentlease as well.  After a few weeks, I talked to my pedi and we believe she might have an intolerance to formula (the milk protein, I think).  He put her on Similac Alimentum and it has really made a difference.  The only downside is that it's really expensive.  I know this is probably not very common and her symptoms were pretty bad (she'd strain so hard she'd spit up and scream in pain), but if it's really concerning to you, call your pediatrician!
  • Speaking of gripe water... does anyone else's LO seem to gag on it?  I've tried giving it to D in a bottle (gagged), with a syringe (gagged), and even just a drop at a time using a medicine dropper (gagged).  It's like it's too thin or something... he sputters/coughs for a good 5-10 minutes afterward.  Or maybe he's sensitive to something in it?

  • My LO seems to do all his pooping in the morning. Like 4/5 big poops between 6:00am and noon and then not again till the next day. Is that normal?

@AbbySeiden‌ - ds very rarely poops in the day. Always at night. At least they're regular? lol I haven't thought much about it.

  • @lest12‌ I started bottle feeding my LO at night because it is much faster and she can actually stay awake to finish the bottle (around 4oz) on most nights. If i nurse her directly, especially the 4am feed, she tends to fall asleep and keeps her lips tight. And of course she wakes up a couple hours later starving. There were a few nights that she couldnt even finish one side so I ended pumping... Which took much longer when all mama wanted to do is to go back to her lalaland.

LO fights bedtime. Is a breeze to put down for all naps and after night time feedings, but fights bedtime. We've tried earlier and later times. I just don't get it.
What really differentiates bed time from nap time at this stage?

LO tries to rip her ears/hair out while eating. If she did it during other times I would maybe think ear infection, but it is only during nursing and immediately after. Thoughts?
My LO tries to pull her cheeks off or poke herself in her eyes while eating. I always have to pry her hands off of her face.
  • @Dharmatron‌ my son does this too. I am constantly telling him to keep his hands out of his eyeballs.

I think this might have to do with a forceful letdown? My LO does it as well and I had an oversupply issue but wasn't sure about a forceful letdown until he started doing this.

@irenewslee do you pump in the middle of the night to offset the bottles? I have the same sleepy issue
  • LO has developed a bit of a goopy eye today. The discharge is slightly greenish . I thought she might have something in her eye that her body is trying to flush out. We have a check up booked on Friday, but thought one of you might be able to tell me if it's something to worry about. Or, more or less normal? Anything I should do for it?

@nutmegs8 A whole year of goop and crusties? Does it have good days and bad days? She woke up this morning with her eye almost crusted shut!

@Babywear Thanks for the tip! Fingers crossed it clears up!

Any experience with hernated belly buttons?
  • Does anyone else here have babies with birth defects or other conditions?

Dd has coloboma of the iris in her right eye, which is luckily mostly cosmetic. She will have appointments every 6 months with the ophthalmologist to make sure her vision is okay, but she will likely have light sensitivity since the coloboma keeps her pupil pretty dilated.

I had a child that I taught at daycare who was 9 months with one. They didn't have to do anything special for it. It just went away eventually. It was pretty weird looking. Kind of looked like a second penis. But he was an adorable kid.

How much spitting up is normal? I feel like DD's may be excessive but the doctors say spit up is normal. Last night after one feeding, she soaked 3 burp rags, my shirt, and her entire outfit. Her spitting up will go on and on. She is on meds for reflux and they seem to be helping make it less painful, but she is still spitting up SO much. She has had issues with weight gain and I think this may be the reason. What is normal? Any tips to help decrease it?

@wareagle0521‌ similar neck issue but the ped didn't mention chiro, at least not yet. I make sure her head is turned right (the direction she needs to work on) when laying down, bfing, and I now change her on her changing table so she has to look out/at me over her right shoulder. If she faces left/the wall I gently turn her head. This has seemed to helped tremendously and I noticed now when I put her down on her back she turns her head to the right instead of left. Just work on it a bit every day!

My older son was like this. He would fountain up milk. Those days are a blur now but it was definitely ounces where-as the baby maybe does a tablespoon here and there which is what I would think is more normal. I still brace myself when hear a huge burp from R since I am half expecting it to all come up like with his brother. I tried the basic advice of burping often and keeping him upright 20 minutes after a feeding but really it just took time for him to outgrow it. I think it got better after 6 months and was pretty much over by a year. I would definitely attribute his spitting up to his slow weight gain since after he outgrew it he did reach what I would consider to be his expected percentiles based on the sizes of DH and I.

  • How much daytime sleep is needed/normal? He sleeps well at night 4/5 hour chunks - but lately he's sleepy all day. He has some awake time but very little and when he does he likes to be held upright so he can look around (which ultimately puts him to sleep). He's 6 weeks today. Any reason for the excessive sleepiness?

I heard that growth spurts sometimes have baby sleeping lots more. 6 weeks is definitely growth spurt time.
