CPW: Have you received any pressure about having a boy vs. a girl?

Before you found out the sex (or even after, in some cases), has anyone put pressure on you about having one or the other?

  • On my side of the family, I have a TON of nephews and one niece, so they're all hoping for a girl. On my H's side of the family, there are all girls so they're hoping we have a boy. I just want a healthy, happy baby!

That's similar for me. On my side, I have four nephews, so I know people are secretly hoping for a girl. (Nobody knows what we're having - we've kept it a secret.) I know they will love this little boy, though, so I am not worried. Our generation was mostly girls, so I feel like this generation is just balancing things out. :)

  • With our first pregnancy we got some comments from my ILs that it would be nice if we could "make it a boy." What?! We explained that we cannot really control that. This time, though, no pressure from anyone. :)

  • My mom and my niece were hoping for a girl but not pressuring...they just wanted to even it out a bit since my parents will now have 4 grandsons and still just 1 granddaughter. ;)
  • Not exactly pressure, but lots of comments from DH's family. My SIL had a boy in January and I'm due a year and a couple of weeks after he was born. She has said many times that she hopes I have a boy "So they can be little shits together." Um, no.

  • No, but seeing as this will be our last LO (we have DS, a DD and soon DD2), MH has gotten the super dumb comment "well, at least you have your boy". Erm, my girl sets the world on fire with awesome-ness, she is in no way an "at least", and I expect the same from DD2.
Oh, people are so lame. :-P I feel the same way about my boy. Yes, he'll be the fifth grandson, but he's not an "at least." Each child is unique and amazing and cool in his/her own way. I am the third of three girls in my family. I am sure my parents felt some pressure to have a boy, and maybe even wanted a boy, but I have never once felt less than for being female. I am just me. :)

  • No one has pressured me at all. DH and I both don't care what sex it is (even though I think DH secretly wants a little girl while I secretly want a little boy). In my family, there are 4 granddaughters and 4 grandsons and in DH's family this will be the very first grandchild.

Since we couldn't see the sex in the ultrasound EVERYONE seems convinced that it will be a girl. I heard a lot "well, if it were a boy the testicles would have shown even if the legs were tightly closed". I even received a couple of dresses...

That kind of makes me hope it's a boy so you can stick your tongue out at all of them. :)

  • Nope. Just a healthy baby. We've had people guess for fun but that's it. One friend of ours (with a daughter) doesn't want us to have a boy because I keep making jokes that I'm baking his future son-in-law. He said if I have a boy we can't be friends anymore haha.

My mom and sister said they would love another boy! We are waiting until harmony to tell DH family. His mom worries, she lost two infants. So we want to reassure her everything is fine. I don't think they will have a preference.

No one has said much of anything to us except prayers for a healthy baby. I know my mom was hoping my 1st would be a girl, but after the issues we have had, she is just happy all is healthy so far. My H would've been thrilled either way, but I know it made him more excited now to learn we are having a boy. His step-mom did make a comment,"I really hope your is a girl!" when her niece had a boy, but we don't put much stock in anything she says.

We were out to dinner with MIL about a week before our a/s and she told us she wants another granddaughter, and that she would be extremely disappointed in us if it was a boy. Eff that noise. It briefly made me hope for a boy over a girl purely out of spite.

  • People keep bringing it up like I can control it or will the babies to have Y chromosomes or something.  We are the last opportunity to carry on the family name, so that is where it is coming from.  Seriously, family, like I can do anything about which sex they are!!!!!

  • We are having twins.... so I have gotten, "I hope you get one of each, then you can be all done!" Yeah, not how that works, thanks :-)

We've gotten that one too.  What I read into it is that if we have two of the same sex, they expect we won't be satisfied so we'll go again.  Dude.  I'm already 35 and it took me four years to get THESE. I want to tell them they had a chance to use their OWN uterus!  Back off mine!
