December 2014 Moms

what are you reading?

So I'm a huge book nerd and I like fiction novels. I'm almost done with Season of the Witch, waiting on the third in the trilogy to come out next week. Anyone else reading anything good? When I finish these two books I'll be looking for another.

  • I actually just started "what Alice forgot" yesterday and I can't put it down. It's a very light read and is really keeping my interest! Pretty cute so far☺️. A couple people on my Instagram recommended it!

I'm reading a book called Tales of the Madman Underground and really liking it. I also just read all of Susan Beth Pfeffer's novels and enjoyed them. My favorites are the Tomorrow When the War Began series which I try to convince everyone to read.

I have never seen/read avatar, lord of the rings, twilight or Harry potter.  I do not feel that I am missing out on much.

  • @BankerBSN‌ you're missing out on Harry Potter! Great story of love, human fault, redemption, self-sacrifice, mortality, and morality.

Agreed. First one or two were a little slower but the books build off of each other.

I don't know.  I am not one for magic and wizardly stuff.  Or is he a sorcerer?

You get past most of that stuff. It is him being immersed in to a culture he knows nothing about but they all know him. Then it is developing friendships and dealing with challenges.

I am normally not into wizardry stuff and loved the series. DH even enjoyed it.

Have you read any Emily Giffin books? I really love her- just read her latest The One and Only. My favorites are Something Borrowed and Something Blue.

Did you like The One and Only? My favorites of hers are also Something Borrowed and Something Blue.

@amw0914‌ @MmsHughes4‌ I liked it but definitely no where near as good as the first few books she wrote. The premise is a little creepy but I like her writing style.
  • I just finished If I Stay and I'm now reading Where She Went.

I also liked that one. I'm working my way through all Liane Moriarty's books and so far have enjoyed What Alice Forgot, Three Wishes, and particularly The Hypnotist's Love Story. I'm trying to pace myself and alternate with other stuff so I don't finish everything she's written too fast.

I have pretty eclectic taste -- I will read historical mystery, suspense, romance, and fantasy/urban fantasy.

  • Im shocked with how many women disliked or just dont want to read Gone Girl. I havent gotten around to reading it yet, and I had honestly heard nothing about the author, Gillian Flynn until around February when I bought and read her novel Dark Places. It was such a well written and awesome book that I bought her two other books! Lol.... So.... At the very least, I can highly recommend Dark Places and will have to come back to this conversation after Ive actually read Gone Girl (hoping I wont be disappointed).

I read Gone Girl and thought it was okay. Parts were intruguing and parts seemed to drag on. Wouldn't call it a complete waste of time but definitely not the easiest read.

I just finished both of these. I didn't love either, though I liked the second one better.

I'm about 100 pages into Gone Girl. I like it so far.. but I'm more excited about the movie. I'm getting ready to start Orphan Train with my book club, so Gone Girl will go on the back burner for a bit. I tend to only read it between book club books.

Oh yeah. I read it but would not be able to read right now.

It was good but the concept of a school shooting and bullying made me uneasy (and I chalk some of that up to my background). Plus now I don't think I can read part of the daughters passages...If you have not reached that section yet just wanted to give you a heads up without true spoilers.

Jodi Picoult writes really good books but every single one of them is sad. There is no way I could read her right now!

I read the Mortal Instruments series but I lost interest in the last book before this newest one. I know the most recent one just came out but I don't know if I should even waste my time. Her other series, Infernal Devices, was MUCH better than Mortal Instrumetns.

@kristtrist2014 I'm reading dark places right now! And it's interesting. I also read Gone Girl and I thought it was a really fun page turner. It goes a little off the rails by the end, but I enjoyed all the twists/surprises. I think I may have been lucky I read it before it was too hyped. If you go into something with high expectations, it's easy to be disappointed.

I started reading the Flowers in the Attic series and it was so damn depressing I stopped about 25% into it. I'm sure they're great but I just felt so bad for those kids and having one on the way and a toddler just depressed me!

Yeah, that might be it... because I didn't expect really anything when I read Dark Places... I didn't even realize it was a NY Times bestseller. Haha. And I definitely understand how you expectations can ruin how you perceive and appreciate a book - for example my friends really really hyped The Fault in Our Stars then I read it and thought it was good, but not amazing or life changing like they said.
  • If any of you ladies are looking for a book that will make you laugh out loud I would highly suggest Let's Pretend This Never Happened by Jenny Lawson. It is memoirs by The Bloggess. If you never heard of her you need to read this: https://thebloggess.com/2011/06/and-thats-why-you-should-learn-to-pick-your-battles/

I know, I just changed a whole bunch of lives...

  • @BankerBSN I love the bloggess! I bought the audio version of her book for a road trip last year, but my husband wasn't enjoying it much so we gave up on it. Your post reminded me that I should really go back to it :)
Everyday I work at being more like The Bloggess and Wil Wheaton.

  • Personally, I hated Gone Girl.  I voraciously read it until the end and honestly would have asked for my money back if that were at all possible.  I love twisted endings but I feel like she had a gun to her head to finish it.  I want to give Dark Places a try but I'm afraid I'll want to hunt her down at the end again.
