Baby Names

So, do you really know, like, a bajillion Sophias?

I know it's number one basically everywhere, has been for a while, and probably isn't leaving the top 10 anytime soon, but I don't personally know any little Sophias. Of course I hear it when I'm out here and there (I'm in Virginia), but not like I hear other names over and over again (like Luke and Isabella, for example). Anyway, I have a Philip (who is always the only Philip under age 30 anywhere), an Andrew (obviously popular and heard everywhere), and a Lydia (hearing more and more since I had her). It doesn't bother me that my youngest son's name is so popular (within the top 20), but I wonder if the number one spot might end up feeling too popular.

So, anyway, where do you live and how many children named Sophia (or Sophie, for that matter) do you know?

I live in VA too and know zero Sophias. One of my friends from high school has a Sophie but we don't live in the same state and I don't see her.

The daughter of my daughter's teacher this past year is Sophia.  I have a friend from college who has a Sophie.  That's about it.

  • Yes, I do know a lot of young girls new Sophia. I used to teach preschool before DS was born, and I think we always had a few Sophia's in our school of 70 or less.

I don't know any Sophia's, but I do hear the name pretty often out and about. It is a pretty name and it goes well with the subset, but if you hate popular names, I might consider something else.

I live in NY and there were 2 in the NICU while DD was there, there's one at storytime, one at the pool, and the 3-year-old daughter of an acquaintance.

  • I know 4. I am close to the Chicago area. Personally I love Sophia but I couldn't do it. My name is Chelsea and I went to school with about 10 other Chelsea's and I hated it. I feel like Andrew won't mind as boys never seem to really care and in fact would rather have a name that fits in but girls want to be unique. I think if you absolutely love it then go for it or you can always use it as a middle!
  • Bunch of Audrey/Aubreys.  A 10 year old cousin with a MN Sofia, and a Sophie who would be in high school now.  Not a single little Sophia anywhere else.

  • I know of 1 Sophia and she is 4.  I also know 1 Sophie and she is 3.  If I loved a name popularity would not deter me unless there were a bunch in my family.
  • I think I know 1. I've always wondered where all the little Sophia's are! Lol I also have never met another Charlotte (DD's name) yet it keeps jumping on the SSA list. Guess they are out there somewhere !

  • I think I know 8 under the age of 8 (live in VA). DD1 had 2 in her kindie class last year, and DD2 had one in her preschool class. The mom of one of the kindie Sophias told me there are at least 5 going into first grade next year--they won't all be in the same class, though.
  • I dont suppose you care about me (I live in the UK)
But I know a fair few Sophies and only 2 Sophias

  • I'm a teacher (1st grade) in MD and I had one in my class last year, there was a Sophie in Kindergarten, and 2 Sophia's in 2nd grade.  I also have friends with a 3 year old Sophia.  Pretty name though.
  • There are THREE in my daughter's class of 20.
  • I know 4, three of which are 2 and under. The other is 6. I live in SC but one of these Sophias is in VA.

  • I know several Sophias. I'm in the Northeast.

  • I live in DC and don't know any here.  (Interesting fact from the SSA:  the #2 girl name here for 2013 was actually Sofia with the F spelling, which leads me to believe that most of those children's parents are Spanish-speaking.)  I do know two baby Sophias, one in NYC and one in an American family living in Brazil.  What's interesting about Sophia, and one thing that makes it a great name despite its popularity, is its resonance across different languages and cultures.

  • i think it is very popular in the NE where there is a big italian population. (yes i know others use the name)

i love it and think it is an absolutely beautiful name although i love the sofia spelling better
  • I've taught preschool for the last three years in Missouri and have yet to meet a single Sophia, Sofia, or Sophie. I love Sophia too but the popularity ruins it for me. Sylvia is at the top of my list instead.

I'm in Los Angeles, and I know one Sophie, and 2 Sofia/Sophias, all under 5.
  • I know several people with tiny Sophia's.
  • I only know 1 Sophie.  We move around every 2-3 years, and Sophia isn't a name I've heard a LOT.  I know they are out there, though!

  • I live in MO and only know 2 little ones.

  • I think we will keep it in our top spot. It's definitely popular but not overwhelmingly so, despite its number one status. Not in the way that I know a dozen Jennifers in their 30s!
