  • @Katieluc106‌ when C was an infant hers looked like that but also smelled like rotting fish. They cauterized it with silver nitrate and it was fine.

  • @Katieluc106‌ my lo's looks just like that. It's almost off but it looks exactly the same underneath. It doesn't smell so I'm guessing it's okay, it just sort of freaked me out!
  • @JmeJoLee83‌ LO didn't like being put down initially. What I have found that works and keeps him sleeping is to swaddle, pick him up and nurse, then when he has fallen asleep again put him back down. Being swaddled seems to make him feel safe. He fights the swaddle some (we had to get the velcro kind because he would break out) but I think subconsciously he likes it and it comforts him. He has to already be swaddled and sleeping to be put down in his crib though. Otherwise he will instantly wake up and fuss.
  • How cab I tell if LO is overheating? It's in the upper 80s and we don't have ac. He is getting sweaty bf'ing and he cluster feeding. :(

When I had DD1, we only had a crappy little wall unit in our apartment and it was in the 90s for the first month or so of her life. She was and still is a super sweaty baby. Her head would be drenched after every nap and every feed. I was told as long as her body didn't feel hot she was okay. So that's what I went off of.

ETA: she also spent most of the day in a diaper or onesie if we were just at home.

Help! Growth spurt, constant feeding. She is crying at the boob, both breasts feel empty. Do I have to give her formula? She is acting like she's starving here!

Dd has been doing that since I started pumping a little. LC said it's fine, she's just frustrated that the milk is flowing slower. I take her off and switch sides and that usually helps. Breast compression helps as well to get the milk out to her. It's so frustrating and sad to see her frustrated with the boob.
Yea, I kept switching. Tried compression but they both feel empty to me because she has been attached for hours and hours on end. I don't know how to survive this growth spurt.

Last night LO was up from midnight to 7:30 a.m. and nursed about four hours of that and was super fussy, kicking, fighting me most of that time. Finally I supplemented with 2 oz of pumped milk when DH woke up and she conked out. If you have some pumped milk I would try that first and see what happens She then went four hours from start to start of feeding and I got to take a little nap.. If no pumped milk then try the formula if only to give yourself some relief - you're not going to hurt her with it, you're feeding her and that makes you a rockstar -

We are defrosting some breast milk now, I barely had a stash.

This will be our first bottle, and now she is nursing, or trying to. I'm so nervous about all this and appreciate the support.

  • My baby doesn't seem to know how to poop on her own anymore. At one week old, she was pooping the normal 4-5 times per day. For the past two weeks, however, she has only had one poop per week- and only after we've assisted her. The two she's had have been huge and rather liquidy, so it's not that she's constipated, she just doesn't know how to work her little butt muscles. I've read that it's normal for some babies to only go once per week, but I don't think she'd go at all if we didn't help her along. She gets super fussy if she hasn't pooped, and I see her straining and getting red in the face. We've done rectal stimulation using a q-tip/thermometer twice, and it has worked wonders both times. I'm worried though because I've heard that if we keep doing that, she will never learn to go on her own. But she is showing no signs of learning as it is, and how long can I let my baby go without pooping and continuing to be frustrated? Also, of course we have tried doing leg exercises first, but they haven't done any good. The stimulation has only been a last resort when nothing else can get her to calm down.

  • Is it normal for a green poop to smell absolutely awful? Gave charlie his midnight change and there was a tint bit a green poo and it smelled rank, sour and disgusting. Up until now he's has the slightly yeasty smelling, yellow seedy bf poop. Nothing in his diet has changed. I did have diahrrea earlier so maybe its something I ate?

@BMaidPlanner‌ oh I feel you on the growth spurt. H has been attached to my boobs so much over the last 24 hours idk how there's any milk left. My pedi told me not to pump yet so I have nothing stashed. :(

At certain ages and stages they use everything they are taking in and have little to poo out.  It's not that they don't know how to poop, it's that they don't have much to poop out.  Be sure that if you see them fussing you bend the little legs at the knees and push them up toward the chest.  Some babies don't like the feel of pooping and getting hot poo up in their crack pushed there by the diaper, so they start straightening out their legs, and turning red in the face trying to hold it in.  so you bend the legs and loosen the diaper and they can't hold it in as well.  don't make a habit of the rectal stimulation thing.

Sometimes lack of poop is a sign they aren't quite getting enough to eat, so make sure diaper count is still very high for pee.

I had thought of the possibility that she wasn't getting enough to eat, but she was still having a very wet diaper after every feeding so I figured that wasn't it. However, I decided it was time to try pumpinig, and when I did I was only able to get about 1 oz of milk total between both breasts. It always seemed like she was getting plenty and was satisfied... anyway, we decided to give her a bottle of formula tonight after seeing how little I was able to get when pumping, and what do you know, she pooped mid bottle on her own. I feel so bad now, thinking that she hasn't been getting enough to eat all this time and I've basically been starving my baby without realizing it.... She still looks healthy, and although she doesn't have another doctor's appointment until the end of the month, our bathroom scale shows that she has gained weight.

  • @babygabe614‌ I started about a week ago. I read after she nurses before bed... I'm not much of a lullaby singer- that's her dad's thing. She seems to be calmed by it.
  • Thanks for everyone!
I actually sent a picture to my pedi and she said it was normal and to still keep it dry and clean like I have been until it looks cleared up. Also if it started to smell get her in right away or if it got red around. If not cleared up by Monday call and bring her in. It started drying out already. So I guess it is normalish! The rest fell off last night. I cried an ugly cry for awhile. She officially has no piece of me attached any more :(

  • @LaurelJoy91‌ we have having a similar issue. Viv will be two weeks tomorrow and hasn't gone in 2 days. My dr told me if she is straining and turning red in the face that she knows what she's doing just having trouble bc she's constipated. This apparently is super common in FF babies bc there is so much iron in the formula. My dr told me a very small amount of prune juice in her bottle ... Like just a tablespoon to a 3oz bottle. So far I've only put it in one bottle, see if it works.

  • @babygabe614‌ we started reading last week when he was about a week and a few days and he seems so engaged! I think he liked looking at the book and hearing my husband read!
  • Thanks for the responses on reading! My husband is the lullaby singer like yours, @sjdihle‌. I think reading to her will be more up my alley. :)

  • Does anyone else's LO sound kind of congested or asthmatic after he/she eats?
Yes! Mine sounds like he's kind of choking on fluid/wheezing and it seems painful. I've suspected reflux. Going to pedi today to get it checked out.
I'm taking mine to the pedi tomorrow. She's having some other signs of painful reflux that has me stressing out. :(
@ElTrain5‌, what did you find out? Pedi suspects mild reflux based on symptoms. Recommended gerber soothe colic drops and me possibly cutting dairy if that doesn't help on its own.

Uggg you have to cut dairy, too? I'm finding this so difficult. I thought I was doing ok, then the pedi asked me if I knew bread has dairy. And lunch meat.
    Damnitall.
Hint of Lime Tostitos have milk in them. So basically I've been screwing up the no milk thing for days.
    I'm so hungry right now.

  • @wareagle1220‌ and @CherSomething‌ keep on mind that some babies can tolerate cooked milk, as it changes the proteins. You might want to try just cutting out uncooked dairy first?

  • The doctor warned us that between 6-8 weeks babies tend to peak at fussiness. LO will be 7 weeks tomorrow and has been crazy for the past few days. He has colic normally so this added on top of it is almost unbearable. Anyone else dealing with almost constant screaming and crying at 6-8 weeks? Usually breast feeding calms him down but even this is not always a sure shot now. When I go to burp him he starts screaming...going to be a long two weeks

  • No idea if this has been discussed already, so I apologize in advance since I'm too lazy to look through this entire thread... anyway is it normal that my 4 week old only eats for about 5 to 10 min at a time? And then isn't hungry again for another 3 or 4 hours? I try to feed him in between 2 and 3 hours but he has no interest. I'm EBFing, and obviously I can't say how much he's eating, but I feel like he should be eating for longer? If I offer him a feeding before the 3 or 4 hours, he'll just play with my nipple and not even attempt to eat. I've thought about taking him to his pedi or something, but I'm hesitant because I have a feeling that they won't tell me anything productive since LO is definitely gaining weight and producing the right amount of wet and dirty diapers. Any thoughts?

This sounds like my little guy--his doc said it's normal and just follow baby's lead for when he's hungry, and make sure he's gaining weight and having enough wet diapers, like you are. Maybe you just have an active flow (that's my issue) and/or LO is a really efficient eater!

    Is this normal for ME?

I am sooooo itchy lately! Idk if its normal hormon changes or what? Idk but my face and upper back are super bad itchy and right now my upper stomach and arms are itchy.
  • Can a baby sleep too much? I swear mine sleeps all day long. Like 20 hours! He does wake to eat though. He is going to be 5 weeks tomorrow.

I don't think so. The baby books say if it smells bad, it's diarrhea.

  • @wareagle1220 I'm waiting for this no dairy to make it to my waistline since basically every dessert I could ever want has dairy in it. No cheese. Do you know how bad I wanted to take a bite of the kid's mac n' cheese last night? No sour cream.. I had a club sandwich without cheese today. weird.

I have no clue how much I weigh and I'm still wearing maternity pants cause my pre-prey pants and shorts don't fit yet. Can't wait to go to FL in a couple weeks. not.

I'm going to go check out that breastfeeding board on AmyG's advice.

Major jealously over here! My LO spends like 40 minutes on the boob and sometimes longer.
No kidding, right? My LO will go longer than that, too. I think we're having latch/milk transfer problems because if I take her off after the recommended 15-20 minutes, she's crying 10 minutes later for more. So really, there's no point in taking her off, she'll just need to be right back on after anyway.

So LOs stump fell off at about a week, the doctor used silver nitrate on it a couple days later, we're on week 3 and it's still kinda like scabby. Normal? Should I ask the doctor about it? It's not red or infected looking or bothering her or anything.

Is he having the "right" amount of wet diapers? If so, then you are probably ok. Mine has been sleeping a lot lately (she is going on week 6) and sometimes skips a feeding. I was so happy one night when she decided to sleep 5 hours so we could finally get some more rest. It also gives me a little bit more free time so i definitely have been enjoying it.
  • Since someone mentioned sleeping all day, I'll do the opposite - is it normal for a BF baby to be awake just about all day? He'll only go to sleep occasionally in the carseat but otherwise is actively awake whether I try to put him down or not. DH says he's just bored and my Mom says it's because he's the son of two very extroverted people, but I just wanted to see.

  • @cinnamonsmiles One time DS was awake from 1pm to midnight, literally 11 hours. He started his colic scream that night around 8pm, so we actually called the pediatrician at 10pm and asked if it was ok for him to be awake that long. They said it was fine. He was probably screaming from being tired too, I hate when that happens.
