Any tried sleep training yet?

Re: Any tried sleep training yet?

  • @SuzyQq02‌I think where/how Ferber gets a bad rap is that people read bits/pieces of things online and just make up their own thing and call it Ferber. Sometimes that means outright neglect because a parent leaves their 6wk old to cry for 15+mins. So the message gets twisted, KWIM?

Absolutely, which is why any time anyone mentions "Ferberizing" their kid in my presence, I ask if they've read the book or had a consult with the center. There's way more too it than just "CIO".

@tyrannosauruslex, I was just advocating caution for how we reference a psychiatric diagnosis in a conversation like this. I worry about a FTM with no background in child development or psychology googling it and freaking out that they've made a huge mistake and their kid is damaged. I know you and others said it's an extreme comparison, which hopefully helps, but I think laying out where it actually comes from (long term persistant neglect of many needs, not just crying before sleep) can help allay some fears some people might be experiencing.

I do feel like this thread is saying that I've permanently damaged my son because I sleep trained him when he was around 10 months. FWIW, I purchased Ferber's book off of half.com and read the whole thing. There's so much good information in it and he makes a lot of sense. I completely agree that most people don't actually know what the Ferber Method is. I will sleep train DD when the time comes if needed.

I think that there are people here who want to sleep train and who want to talk about the various methods. I know this is a public forum and everyone has a right to voice their opinions but since we're also a respectful community, I think that we should be able to have a thread in the future where people are able to openly discuss sleep training without comment from those that are against it. Kind of like the weight loss thread in which people can openly discuss loss and include numbers if they choose and those who don't want to read about it, don't open it.

ETA I hadn't refreshed to see TLex's last comment but she's basically volunteered not to participate in sleep training threads and that is what I was getting at. I wasn't referring to TLex specifically though just people who are against it in general.

That would be ideal, for sure. It seems like there are so many polarizing topics when it comes to parenting, and it is (evidently) nearly impossible to have a simple conversation about sleep training vs. not sleep training, or BF versus FF, or parents who SAH vs. work, vaccines vs no vaccines or daycare vs. nanny, etc. etc...
  • @MissDemeanor‌ I was wondering if it's been heat related. She's generally a crapper napper, but I wonder if the heat is making her more tired.

For those that have done the check in sleep training (after 3 mins, then 5, then 10, etc)...do you rock them back to sleep when you go in the room? Or just so they stopped crying then put them back down?

I'm currently only worrying about naps, and LO will either STTN or not. I try and put him down for naps at 10, 2, and 6. In theory I'd put him to bed at 10pm but he usually falls asleep before that.

It's been about 2 weeks, and so far is going well. But I also have no life, and can adjust my day to this. Today I decided to get him to nap in his crib, instead of in my arms. It took me about 45 minutes instead of 5-10 but he's asleep! I'm betting it'll be a shorter sleep, but that's ok.

I took a fussy Reece to Walmart the other day, and in the A/C he instantly fell asleep, so we looked at ALL the things. And the other day he was fussy and I took him swimming and he stopped being fussy. I'm sure he was happy to cool down! @rachaelmary Have you taken you LO in your complex's pool yet?

sometimes napping in her crib works, but most times it ends in both of us being super frustrated and her missing her nap as it's now time to eat.  i just struggle with when i should stop trying because she needs to sleep, or if i need to just keep trying, even though she misses her naps, until eventually she'll just nap in her crib.

im trying hard not to complain or get frustrated...LO is a great night sleeper, goes down generally pretty easy and is sttn.  so i'm just worried about naps as well.

no i haven't tried the complex pool yet...i've been wanting to wait until she's 6 months and we can use sunscreen as there are no shaded spots in the pool.  she LOVES the kiddie pool at my IL's though.  she stayed in there for about 20 minutes on tuesday having the time of her life.  We hooked the hose up to the basement sink, though, so it was warm water...not sure how she'll feel about cold water.
  • I'm no longer participating in sleep threads. I am happy to pm evidence based studies to those with an interest who are open to learning more about the reasons learning "self soothing" is an impossibility, but I'm not wasting my time with trying to convince people who WANT to sleep train anyways. That's your call and it's ok to feel differently, I'm just not wasting my time trying to educate people who don't want to learn otherwise.
    I want your studies!
