Potty training and long car trips

2 year old DD has been out of diapers and in regular panties for about a week now.  We still have to remind her a lot to use the potty but she is doing very well with it and has had very few accidents.  She's been accident free for 3 days in a row now.  I still put her in a diaper for naps and bedtime.  The last two days she has woken up dry from her nap but nighttime her diaper is usually very wet.
Anyway, we are going on vacation and have an 8 hour car ride.  She will likely fall asleep at some point during the trip and I am nervous about her having an accident while she's sleeping in her car seat.  I would hate to have her sit in a wet car seat for the remainder of the trip but I also feel like putting her back in a diaper would be going backwards after all the progress we've made.  We are bringing her potty with us and don't mind stopping for her to use it, just not sure about how to handle her having an accident.

Re: Potty training and long car trips

  • Put a pull up on over her undies. She'll still feel if she has an accident (still reinforcing potty training) but she and her car seat will still stay dry.

  • I agree. That's what I did. Also bring a portable potty. I liked the pottete potty 2 in 1. When they say they have to go, they have to go. There isn't usually time to find a bathroom. Pulling over and having her go in the back of the car (I have a hatch back) saved me tons of times. And they have Baggie attachments for that potty incase it's a number 2. You just have to find a trash can and you won't need to take it with you. :)

I have heard this recommendation too.

DS doesn't need pull-ups for naps, but does for night time.  If your DD is doing good staying dry for naps, the car probably wont' be an issue.

  • You can use chux or puppy pads under her bum without interfering with the safety or function of the seat :)
