~Gestation Diabetes Check In -7/1~

This check-in is for anyone with Gestational Diabetes or those who have blood sugar levels that are high or low and could use the extra support. Check-in is posted on Tuesdays.

Keep in mind that any info shared here isn't meant to be medical advice and if you plan on changing something to run it by your Dr. first-as most of these posts go with the bump!

I've seen a few helpful links posted here in the last week since being diagnosed and I found them extremely helpful!

 https://community.babycenter.com/post/a46582366/new_to_gd_quick_reference

Also, through my stalking on TB, I found there is an actual GD group-I haven't checked it out yet, but here is the link:

https://forums.thebump.com/group/271-gestational-diabetes

Now the questions-

How far along are you?

Management Method (diet/exercise or insulin/other medication):

Any upcoming appointments/tests (growth u/s, NST, etc) in the next week?

Anything you are struggling with or need help with? Any questions? Anything working well you'd like to share?

GTKY: How are you ladies planning to survive the upcoming holiday weekend in terms of sweets and less than healthy food?

Re: ~Gestation Diabetes Check In -7/1~

  • How far along are you? 27 weeks, 5 days

Management Method (diet/exercise or insulin/other medication): Diet only

Any upcoming appointments/tests (growth u/s, NST, etc) in the next week? I don't have an appointment until the 10th to discuss my numbers. So far I have only had two numbers in the last week and that was because we went out to eat. So I think I am doing pretty well. I plan to ask when the extra monitoring starts again because I can't remember what they said last time, information overload.

Anything you are struggling with or need help with? Any questions? Anything working well you'd like to share?  I think I've found a pretty good balance of what works that really hasn't changed my eating too much. I've had to give up my granola bars and chai tea from SB, but other than that I can eat pretty much the same as I was before and my BSL's are well within in range. Anyone know of a drink from Starbucks that fits with the diet lol??

GTKY: How are you ladies planning to survive the upcoming holiday weekend in terms of sweets and less than healthy food? So far we don't even have any 4th of July plans but probably to grill out or smoke some meat on Friday, so I don't think it will be a huge issue. I did find I can have a skinny cow ice cream treat for my nightly snack and still have good fasting numbers, so I've been using that as my treat!

    Management Method (diet/exercise or insulin/other medication):  Diet/exercise

Any upcoming appointments/tests (growth u/s, NST, etc) in the next week? Not this week, but I will probably be going back to weekly appointments after next week if my fasting numbers keep doing what they're doing.

Anything you are struggling with or need help with? Any questions? Anything working well you'd like to share? Fasting numbers have been creeping up, no matter what I eat.  I'm irritated, but I know those are the hardest to control, so I'm gonna try a few more different snack combinations before my appointment next week.  And I'm gonna call my nurse when the clinic opens to try and talk to her about it.

GTKY: How are you ladies planning to survive the upcoming holiday weekend in terms of sweets and less than healthy food?   We are having a BBQ at work on the 3rd, and then going out to the celebration here on base on the 4th.  I'm gonna try and make good choices, but I can't bring outside food or drink to the celebration thing, so I'm gonna make do with what I have there for snacks and meals.  It's gonna be interesting.

  • How far along are you? 31 weeks today!

Management Method (diet/exercise or insulin/other medication): Diet only

Any upcoming appointments/tests (growth u/s, NST, etc) in the next week? My next appointment is on the 10th. Dr. wants an ultrasound to check on growth of LO. She's not 100% sure I was diagnosed correctly (or at the very least that I'm as "bad as they thought" (her words) after discussing my numbers last week. But she would still rather me stay the course as though I am just to be safe.

Anything you are struggling with or need help with? Any questions? Anything working well you'd like to share?  I have found that I can pretty much eat anything - except carbs in the morning. My breakfast needs to be all protein, but other than that I can eat anything I want. I had my baby shower this past weekend and had a big piece of the cake and tested before and after and my BS never went over 120, so I'm not sure what's going on. My morning fasting number is the only number that is ever high and that is marginal - AND if I eat half a peanut butter sandwich and a glass of milk before bed, it's normal in the AM. My doctor seems ok with this technique.

GTKY: How are you ladies planning to survive the upcoming holiday weekend in terms of sweets and less than healthy food? I will probably not dive into sweets, but pretty much eat whatever as "smartly" as I can. Even though it doesn't seem to affect me as much I still try to keep my carbs relatively in check all day, I think BBQ sauce might be the only thing that makes me nervous as I haven't had any since the diagnosis...but I would assume there is more sugar in a giant slab of carrot cake than there is in BBQ sauce right, lol?

  • How far along are you?  31 weeks tomorrow

Management Method (diet/exercise or insulin/other medication): diet and exercise, but I am meeting with a mfm on Thursday and they will probably put me on something.  I am getting an occasional high numbers.

Any upcoming appointments/tests (growth u/s, NST, etc) in the next week?  I am meeting with the mfm on Thursday and will have a growth u/s then as well

Anything you are struggling with or need help with? Any questions? Anything working well you'd like to share?  @suitern  I love unsweeten iced green tea at sbx  it has a minty flavor and just really hits the spot for me.

GTKY: How are you ladies planning to survive the upcoming holiday weekend in terms of sweets and less than healthy food?  I have to work on the 4th from 3p -3am and then work Sunday as well.  So I really don't have to worry too much about eating crappy stuff.  Unless I pack it.

@an02102, I actually got an unsweetened teat there today! It was good, but not amazing like my chai tea ha ha.

  • Hope it's ok that I'm joining you ladies!

How far along are you? I'm 29wks 5 days

Management Method (diet/exercise or insulin/other medication): So far I've been able to keep my numbers down with diet and exercise.  I had GD with my almost 2yr old and was able to keep it under control with diet the whole time so I'm really hoping for the same outcome this time.

Any upcoming appointments/tests (growth u/s, NST, etc) in the next week? I just have my regular 30wk OB appointment tomorrow and we have a growth u/s schedule for July 31st

Anything you are struggling with or need help with? Any questions? Anything working well you'd like to share?  I'm struggling some with breakfast ideas but I did last time too.  I have to be really careful with the amount of carbs I have in the morning and even the recommended portions from my dietitian seem to be a no go and bananas forget it!

GTKY: How are you ladies planning to survive the upcoming holiday weekend in terms of sweets and less than healthy food? Portion control seems to have worked for me so far.  I find if I completely deprive myself of the sweets etc. completely it makes it alot harder.  So I'll do something like a hamburger w/ no bun a small portion of potato or pasta salad and then lots of veggies or regular salad.  Once I test the numbers for my meal and they are within range I will allow myself one cookie or very small piece of cake.  I seem to handle fruit salad well as long as I keep the portions small.  I've also had DH get dessert that looks yummy and I'll just have a taste of it to satisfy the craving.

  • 27w2d today

    Diet controlled so far

    No appts until next week

My numbers were seeming to creep up but I had a nearly 130 fasting the other day and immediately retested because I knew that wasn't right and it was low 80s. Then I looked at my test strips and realized they were the tub that my 2yo got when she has sticky sicker fingers. :( I had to skip a day or two of testing until insurance would refill so today's the day!! (My OB is fine with me skipping days or testing even just 3 times a week)

Tips- @suitern‌ I am a coffee junkie and have had to limit how much I drink :( but I just switched to sugar free. Most places now offer almost all options SF as long as you aren't opposed to the occasional artificial sweetener. If you aren't use to the SF stuff the aftertaste is yucky at first but you'll get use to it. Plus most SB drinks are milk based so there's a bonus for you!

Holiday weekend plans are camping with my ginormous family (25 of us) at the coast. I am the one who heads up the food coordination and planning so as long as I just stick with my normal as best I can, I should be fine. I limit bread, add protein and watch sweets. I seem to do ok with small servings of cake/cookie/ice cream during the day. It's all about moderation!!

Have a good week and Happy 4th of July!!

Welcome to the check in! I find breakfast hard too, but I am pretty used to eating the same thing every day and not having it be a big deal. Currently, I've been eating peanut butter toast (1 piece and 100% whole wheat bread) and a 1/2 of grapefruit, with 8 oz. of milk. If my fasting sugar is a bit high, I skip the toast and make eggs with cheese. It usually helps bring everything down.

  • My breakfast go to's (that looks off, but lack of sleep is making me not care!) are scrambled eggs with corn tortillas, cheese and some kind of meat if I am feeling ambitious. Fried eggs on toasted English muffin and cheese melted on top. And scrambled eggs with hash browns. I can get away with these small carb servings with enough protein but add in fruits and more grain or even peanut butter and I'm done for. I am SO tired of these three options lately. .(
  • Thanks for the tips ladies!  I've done a lot with eggs and my numbers come out ok but I'm just getting so tired of them!  I did a half of a whole wheat bagel today with cream cheese, a small bowl of blueberries/strawberries and a glass of milk and my numbers were fine at 107.  I did the same thing the other day with a half of a banana instead of the berries and it was 125.  It's so crazy to me how differently my body reacts to different things even though according to the diet they are supposed to be equal servings of carbs.

  • I've heard many people have bananas on their no-no list. Just do your best trying to figure out what works for you and adjust things accordingly for next time. There are so many times when I've eaten things like spaghetti and thought my level would be high but nope. For some reason I can eat bowls of spaghetti with tomato sauce and I'm fine but I eat one small plain pancake any time of the day and I cannot get back on track the rest of the day. Sometimes I just think it's all a crap shoot depending on the day.
  • @CrystalRL - I am in the same situation as you. I have found that I can eat carbs at ANY other time of the day, but not morning. My fasting numbers are always higher, and breakfast seems to be the most sensitive meal of the day.

I have taken to eating an ice cream bar or cone, or a peanut butter sandwich with milk right before I go to bed. My BS is always below 100 the next morning. Sometimes below 90 with the PB sand & milk.

Regardless of what my fasting #'s are, breakfast has to be ALL protein. Right now, I have been making omelets - trying different combos of ingredients - this week is sausage, mushroom & cheddar. Last week was red pepper, spinach and feta. As long as I don't eat any carbs at breakfast - my numbers are good.

If I eat carbs the rest of the day, as long as I watch portion size to line up with what's on the label - my BS is totally fine.

  • @CrystalRL - My doc says it can. It can raise the glucose levels in some people. Are you testing at 1 hour or 2? I test at 1 and my doc said that if I am ever in a situation where I feel that my BS might be high (over my goal of 140) at 1 hour because of excessive stress, to take the next hour, try to calm down and relax and retest at 2 hours with a goal of under 120. You might want to ask your doctor if that is something that would work for you in situations like that.

  • @suitern I hope it's ok for me to join in.  I just got the news today.

How far along are you? 29 weeks, 3 days along

Management Method (diet/exercise or insulin/other medication): starting with dinner tonight, just diet.

Any upcoming appointments/tests (growth u/s, NST, etc) in the next week? I have to make a "diabetes counseling" appointment with a specialist that I was told will be a detailed nutritionist lesson as well as some other guidelines.

Anything you are struggling with or need help with? Any questions? Anything working well you'd like to share?  I don't start testing until Thursday actually - I'm picking up my monitor, lancets, and testing strips tomorrow.  Any advice on making it as painless as possible?

GTKY: How are you ladies planning to survive the upcoming holiday weekend in terms of sweets and less than healthy food? We don't have any special plans for the weekend, except maybe a BBQ - I'm more concerned about tomorrow.  It's my birthday, and I'm irrationally upset about not being able to have my husband's homemade ice cream cake.

Well, I was just diagnosed with GD yesterday :(

I probably won't be able to talk with a nutritionist until next week so I'm not sure what to eat in the meantime. I've been looking up information and see I need to cut out lots of carbs and obviously sugars. If anyone has meal suggestions I'd love to hear them!

I'm 28 weeks 5 days. I'm not sure what my management method will be since I haven't talked to the doctor about it yet. I'm excited for my ultrasound today, hoping to get a good 3d picture!

I'm nervous about the pricking my finger 4 times a day...but I'm sure I'll get used to it.

This weekend probably won't be easy...I should just stay in! haha :)

  • @amy06 - you will learn very quickly where it hurts and doesn't hurt. Test it on all fingers on both sides as you go along. I've found that when I do it on my index or middle finger on the right side (if I'm looking at the back of my hand) I don't feel it at all.

Agreed-my nurse told me to test on the side of my fingers and not use my thumb or pinky finger. I find that my ring finger is more sensative as well than my index or middle finger.  I generally stick just my left hand as I am right handed and feel like I have more control.

  • Something I was wondering, I just finally got to see my #'s from my 3-hour test and holy crap I failed with flying colors! Fasting - 100, 1 hr - 199, 2 hr - 175, 3 hr - 130.

My question is, what in the hell is in that drink because since I've been diagnosed my BS hasn't been over 140 - regardless of what I eat - ice cream and cake included. My fasting is still high and usually at or below the 100 mark, but the rest of my meal tests are fine - even when I eat something that logically should make my blood go sky high. I have an appt with my doc next Friday, but I thought I would see if any of you have had the same thing?

I failed my 1 hr with a 180 and then passed the fasting and 1 hour of my 3 hour, but then had like a 170 for 2 hr, and a 145 for the 3 hour.

I've only had 2 readings over what they should and that was because I had crab dip with peta bread (alot of it ha ha) and then an ice cream snack before bed and my fasting number was still high the next day...I don't know much about GD, but it seems that the 100 grams of sugar in the glucola is just hard to process in the body for GD Moms. I plan to talk to the Dr. about my numbers next week.

See that's weird for me because if I don't have ice cream before bed my fasting is over 100, but if I DO then it's usually about 95 or below.

    Gestational diabetes is stupid. X(

I can have ice cream normally, but I think it was high that day because my dinner number was still so high from not eating well and then I had the ice cream (not thinking lol). Usually my fasting number is in the low 80s.

  • How far along are you?  31 weeks

Management Method (diet/exercise or insulin/other medication):  diet and insulin at night

Any upcoming appointments/tests (growth u/s, NST, etc) in the next week?  I'm a couple days late checking in, but had an appointment with the Diabetes counselor on Tuesday and that is when I started insulin.  My fasting numbers were too high, so I'm taking a night time dosage and this morning, I finally had my first number under 90mg.  I was also supposed to have my 2 week OB visit today, a week late, but received a call this morning that it needs to be rescheduled due to power outage issues.  I'm starting to get a little irritated with my ob office, but am thankful for my perinatal office, which has picked up the slack!

Anything you are struggling with or need help with? Any questions? Anything working well you'd like to share?  I'm starting to get to that point where I am just so exhausted.  Luckily today is my last day of work for 1 month, so hopefully I can get a lot of rest and get the nursery ready before I go back.

GTKY: How are you ladies planning to survive the upcoming holiday weekend in terms of sweets and less than healthy food? I have found that I am able to eat sweets in moderation as long as I do it for lunch or dinner.  If I have sweets before noon, forget it.  I'm worried about how I'm going to manage the day of my baby shower in just a week and a half.

Thank you CrystalRL and ConversationFear! That helps a lot!
When I get home, I can scan in the flyer the dietitian gave to me, it has been really helpful.

How far along are you? 29 weeks today and will be delivering at 34 weeks.

Management Method (diet/exercise or insulin/other medication): diet

Any upcoming appointments/tests (growth u/s, NST, etc) in the next week? I'm currently hospitalized for preeclampsia, so I see a doctor everyday.

Anything you are struggling with or need help with? Any questions? Anything working well you'd like to share?
It's all new to me but somewhat grateful to be in the hospital because they take care of everything.

What time of day did you drink it? It seems like AM numbers are harder to control for most. I don't usually have sweets like that in the mornings anyway but I wonder if I would have the drink later in the day, how different my numbers would be.

  • Can I ask a newb question? I haven't been to my consultation for this yet, so I haven't gotten paper instructions about what constitute "good" and "bad" numbers. I have the appointment for all of that next week.

What is a good range for fasting, and what is a good range for an hour after meals according to everyone's doctors?

@mrsdanielleM22010 Honestly, from what it seems from reading here and on another board, numbers vary based on the person and what your specific practice does.

My practice wants my fasting numbers below 100 in the AM and then all my other 3 measurements below 120, 2 hours after eating. Some people are below 140, some test 1 hr after eating vs. 2 hours...I don't know what makes the distinction.

My office used 92 as the cut off for the fasting number on test day, and I failed because I got a 93. I also only took a two hour test, they don't do the 1 and 3 combo.

Today was the first day I tested, and fasting was only 75.
1 hour after a breakfast of a poached egg, 128
1 hour after early lunch of a mcgriddle from mcdonalds, 113
1 hour after early dinner of hummus and pita, 106.

I don't get if I actually have GD or not, but then again it's only one day of testing. How can my highest number be from a poached egg! I'm really frustrated and feeling like a complete idiot.

  • @lmlorenz12 - I had my test at 9 am. I've often wondered about taking it in the afternoon too. I am so annoyed by this whole thing because my fasting is the only thing that's high and it's still between 90-100. It's not like it's 130 to start. Then all of the rest of my tests are so low regardless of what I eat (except that I can't eat bread or sweets for breakfast).

I was just baffled when I saw that my numbers from drinking that crap were almost 200. Obviously based on my current #'s, I never eat anything like that orange crap anyway (since I haven't changed my diet much except for breakfast). I'm not sure how many of us actually DO eat anything that's as bad (or full of sugary garbage) as that stuff.

Did you drink anything with breakfast (juice, milk, coffee)? Really, I think that 128 an hour after eating isn't too high? I am not sure-I thought it was supposed to be under 140 an hour after eating, but I don't test that soon after I eat-I test at 2 hours.

  • @suitern I've been drinking water only for the past two weeks since I had an episode of dehydration. I will just keep logging, and maybe (and maybe I'm being a big baby) they will say I don't actually have this condition.

  • Management Method (diet/exercise or insulin/other medication): diet for now but one week of semi high fasting numbers and I'm going on glyburide(?) or something to help my fasting numbers.

Any upcoming appointments/tests (growth u/s, NST, etc) in the next week? Going to doctor and getting an ultrasound every week starting next Monday. Work is going to hate me but oh well lol

Anything you are struggling with or need help with? Any questions? Anything working well you'd like to share? I'm pretty much eating whatever I want, just smaller portions and more often. Those darn morning numbers are tough to keep down. Even after yesterday's BBQ and eating pie and brownies my last reading after dinner was 120.

GTKY: How are you ladies planning to survive the upcoming holiday weekend in terms of sweets and less than healthy food? Mmm sweets lol I don't usually crave sweets but we have a mini apple pie and some brownies leftover. Need to get rid of it quick!

Yeah, in my two weeks of testing, I have had two numbers that were over. I have intentionally started eating stuff to see if it will spike my sugar since they told me to experiment during this time. So far I've had donuts (a huge craving), chai tea (another vice) and just a variety of fruits and milk in the AM and throughout the day. So far, nothing has bothered my BSL's. If you really feel you don't have it, perhaps ask them to take the 3 hour again? I was trying to read online last night about being misdiagnosed, but didn't find much. I have come to terms with it I guess...I just try to keep in the mindset that I am doing it for LO and really in the long run the next 10 weeks I can handle watching what I eat and sticking myself 4 times per day.

  • @suitern I'm with you that watching what I eat & doing the test sticks is not a big deal, especially if it could potentially keep my LO healthier. My biggest concern is actually when it comes to delivery. I have been told that I won't be allowed to go late, and that an induction any time from 38 weeks on is a big possibility. Of course I will do whatever it takes to get him here safely, but I am hoping for as few interventions as possible.

Ah yes, I 100% agree with you there. The LAST thing I want is to be induced and I pushed my Dr. on this issue and he said the furthest I could get is 39 weeks, but most likely would induce later in the 38 weeks. I had DS at exactly 38 weeks, so I am rather hopeful for a repeat with her. I had a friend who had very controlled GD and her Dr. let her go to 41 weeks with alot of NSTs and growth ultrasounds. Her son was only 7 lbs.

I said something to my doctor about this too and she acted like she was going to wait 40 weeks come hell or high water. I asked her about the complications of possibly delivering a 12-14 lb baby (not saying that's what I will have, but it's definitely not something I want) and her reply was, "Well even at 38 weeks and 14 pounds he may not be ready to come out." I think she is going to avoid any kind of interference at all (induction or cesarean). It's the first time since I've been going to her that I don't feel 100% in her decision on something. I'm not sure what she's thinking, but she's the only doctor I've ever heard of that would deliberately let a woman have a huge baby just because it's not at 40 weeks.
