Anyone had a triplet pregnancy that 'self-reduced'

Hello _ I'm 6 weeks 4 days and went for my first pregnancy ultrasound.  I did IVF and transferred two embryos.  They both implanted and one of them split.  So I have two embryo sacs with 3 heart beats.  It's a real shock and a little overwhelming.  I would be thrilled with twins but my head is spinning at the thought of triplets.  Has anyone had an embryo appear at 6 weeks that did not continue to develop much past that?  Thank you.  And apologies if any of this sounds insensitive.  It's a crazy time right now.

Re: Anyone had a triplet pregnancy that 'self-reduced'

  • I don't blame you--three babies is no joke! Good luck--what a crazy surprise!! BUT, I am so happy for you that both embryos transferred successfully with heart beats all around.

  • Thank you, @wintersong139  It's very strange - great news to be pregnant at all after trying for almost four years and multiple procedures and yet scary.
    Thanks for the support.

  • Wow triplets! That's great, but a lot to take in.

  • Wow! I can see how this would be overwhelming! I have never been in your position, but I think only you and your SO know what is best for your family. It's still early on, and I wouldn't make any decisions until the reality of the situation has sunk in.

  • There are many reasons not to have triplets. Many doctors would recommend that I utilize selective reduction.  I would want to be put in that position but one of my nurses mentioned that in her experience these things have a way of working themselves out and that often one of the embies in the shared sac will not progress and will be resorbed.  Just curious if anyone had that happen to them.

    Hi and welcome!

I did a double embryo transfer and got twins. (confirmed by u/s 5 week 3 days). My RE said there was 15% chance of one being absorbed. We heard heartbeats the next week at 6 weeks 3 days and I go back tomorrow for another u/s.

We have a lot of multiple moms on F15 and will be doing a check in thread on Thursdays!

  • @cls78 Are your twins from two embryos implanting or one embryos splitting in two?  Good luck tomorrow!

  • A poster I 'know' was recently in a similar situation. Sadly the identical twins did not continue to grow but last I checked her singleton is doing well. I'm mobile and can't find more info right now. I just found out today we're having twins and that's awesome but scary, so I can understand your apprehension about three. Wishing you and your babies all the best!!

  • @crcostelWed158933  Wow!  I do not envy you.  How are holding up?  I was completely unprepared for this.  I was prepared for twins or a singleton or even the horrible thought that they wouldn't find anything.  Triplets never crossed my mind.  Fingers crossed for you.

Was there any indication that any of your babies were not as strong as others?  For example, my singleton measured right on track and heartbeat was strong and loud but one of the identical twins was little smaller and heartbeat was more difficult to detect.

  • Ahh twins sounds like a cake walk right now.

I think we just have to have faith that things will work out the way they are supposed to and that we get what we're supposed to have.

I knew something was up from the Beta numbers but I had no idea it would be this.

Thursday is the next U/S. In my dreams I hope a couple combine to form 2 super-strong embreyos!

  • My best friend had the exact same thing happen to her. She had two embryos transfer and implant and one split. When she went for her first ultrasound, the twins had a strong heartbeat and the singleton's wasn't as strong. When she went back for an eight week u/s, there were only two heartbeats. She was sad over the loss, but ultimately relieved. Three babies is a lot!
  • @ rhapsody11  I feel bad saying it but I am hoping that's what happens at my next ultrasound.  I think that's what the doctors are hoping for too.

I had a similar feeling when we went in and found 2 yolk sacs and one heartbeat. I can't imagine how you are feeling. Not that I wouldn't love two babies but, we were not even ttc at all so, one was a shock as it was. Also- I have a uterine abnormality that puts me at great risk of PTL with just one babe and also a tummy tuck with sutured muscles with also carries some increased risk of PTL. So, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't on the fence about seeing baby 2. Which made me feel like an awful person since just a week prior I was crying at the thought of losing what I thought was just one (bleeding).

Well, yesterday we found 2 little heartbeats in there. So, at this point I just have to pray that everything goes as smooth as possible from here on out. It's definitely a shock, and I know I'm likely gathering little sympathy from you given the circumstances but, I can to some degree relate with the ambivalence. We have yet to find out what kind of ID I am carrying as there as of now, is no visible membrane. I'm petrified of the risk of Mo/Mo.

On a lighter note... How is your MS? I am shocked at how terrible I am feeling, as I maybe got sick once with my son and it was super out of the blue. I am really struggling and I feel like it is almost making the me at transition more difficult because I am feeling like if I can't even handle this, how in the hell am I going to feel going forward.

I hope I didn't hijack your post. I just wanted to throw my feelings out there amongst women who may relate.

    @crcostelWed158933  How are you feeling?

Tired - nauseous - bloaty - the usual fun!

Emotionally I'm torn. It sounds horrible but I would have been happy to let nature choose for me
I had a similar feeling when we went in and found 2 yolk sacs and one heartbeat.
You didn't hijack at all! These are totally the same feelings.

M/S is awful. 4 times the placentas + 4 times the HCG = 4 times the nausea

  • @elephantsonpatrol The other thing I was thinking in your case - do you know that all four are healthy?  I think when you have to undergo selective reduction, they do some sort of screening and if one or more of them has an abnormality, that makes the decision process a little easier and a little more like nature choosing.  I did IVF with PGS so (unfortunately) I know all three of my babies are healthy.

  • We did not do pgs - so far everything is on track. The RE recommended we reduce the identicals for a number of reasons

  • Just got back from my ultrasound.  All 3 embryos are measuring on track with strong heartbeats.  I'm so blue.  I don't want to say goodbye to my babies.  How can I do that to them?
