  • I'm so sorry you're dealing with this. What does your doctor suggest? How is your H feeling? Hugs.

I am sorry you are facing this decision, does your doctor give you any options?

  • @Jay_Cee MD suggests selective reduction.  Unfortunately, that would likely mean going from 3 to 1.  It's breaking my heart.

  • @bhjones1980 Yes, crazy that I can be carrying three babies around and feel pretty much fine.

  • Since you did PGS you may keep your twins - a large part of my RE recommending the other way is to avoid a situation where all the remaining test positive for T18 or whatever.

With tripletes the risk is less if you decide not to reduce at all too than in my case.

  • My twin pregnancy would still be high-risk so the final recommendation all around is a 3:1 reduction.  The risk maybe less than in your case (I'm not comparing them) but still very risky in any case and not recommended by any of at least 3 doctors that I have consulted with.

  • @flutterfly88 they can't really tell you that you have to do it.  They give you the option to carry the triplets but everyone is recommending against it.

  • @arender interesting. Well we meet with the OB for the first time tomorrow and who knows what (or if) he'll feel comfortable saying

  • @arender I can't speak to your exact situation but if you feel strongly about continuing with all 3 babies, then you should hold your conviction.  Doctor's can say what they want but you are their mother and it's your job to call the shots.  I have a friend who had a twin pregnancy and all the doctors were talking doom and gloom about their survival chances and complications for various reasons.  She took all those concerns to God and carried her identical twins to full term, gave birth naturally, and ebf'd them for a year and a half.  The doctors were shocked!  All that to say don't let someone's lack or faith or confidence cause you to make a decision out of fear.
  • @CatLadyTX  Thank you.  That really means a lot.  This is not easy for me.  There is no good decision.  I want to be enjoying my pregnancy, and getting excited, and feeling relieved to see a strong heartbeat.  Instead I just feel blue.  Thank you for the love and support.

  • @annagrya  It's very complicated.  I wouldn't have wanted triplets but here they are.  Though I think the best thing is to reduce, it will not be easy and I hate being put in this position.

  • @arender have you reached out to the multiples board, I'm sure some of those ladies have been in you shoes.  With which ever you decide I'm sure you can get advice from both sides of the boat.

I think of you and your situation and my heart breaks and there is no way I would know which decision to make.

  • @arender who are you looking at to do the procedure if you do it? My OB referred me to another RE but that doesn't seem right...

  • Dr. Janet Horenstein
I've already spoken to her.  She seems good.  Both my RE and my OB recommended her.

  • She does look good. I'm just worried the guy I was referred to doesn't do the procedure

  • If he doesn't do it, what's the point?  I think SR is all Dr. Horenstein does which is important.  Usually those doctors have the lowest loss rate and are the most knowledgable with statistics and risks.  Keep me posted.

Exactly. I'm going to call that office and ask if he does it. If not, then I have to call the OB again. <Sigh>

I personally have not been in your situation. But one of my closest friends has. She initially had four embryos that self reduced to 3. She was scared, but couldn't go through with the reduction. She had a cerclage placed at 18 weeks and was on strict bedrest at home. At 23 weeks, her DH, my DH's partner was killed in the line of duty on Easter Sunday in 2010. When her family left town, I took my children and moved in with her until her babies were born. She carried them to 36 weeks, they were all born healthy at 4lb 9oz, 5lb 5oz and 4lb 11oz. All three healthy baby girls with no NICU!! I was blessed to be in the delivery room when they were born. They just turned 4 in June :) I believe these babies gave her the strength to keep going when it seemed she had lost her whole world. I guess my point is, that if you are feeling a conviction to keep all three babies, then do it. Their purpose is not yet known, and they may bring you joy that you could never have predicted. I would never wish my friend's tragedy on anyone, but those three babies turned out to be the very thing that gave her a happy ending. Hugs to you in your decision!
