Re: UO Thursday

  • I may be slammed for this...but I can't stand seeing 2+ year old kids with binkis in their mouth all day long. I never say anything to the parents because if that's what works for them, whatever, but I do secretly hate seeing it when the kid doesn't need soothing- they're playing at the park, jumping on a trampoline, swimming, whatever and the binki is shoved in their mouth.
At 2 years old I think.. eh.. whatever. I have seen kids that look well older that my DD with Binks.. I don't know if I quite side-eye.. it just kind of makes me go "ummmm".

My husband's motto is "if they are old enough to ask for it, they're too old for it."

Luckily for us, neither of our children took one.

  • I agree with the naked belly pics. It's a no for me. I also kind of agree with the large family thing too. I am one of six, really three, but my mom raised her three step kids too. I feel that it was hard for her to make time for all of especially working full time.

My UO is I hate pie. It's a texture thing and I know it's all in my head. I just can't even look at them. It doesn't even matter what kind.

I'm one of 6 kids. I'd have to ask to be sure but I am pretty confident that none of my siblings feel neglected in any way by my parents. We're very close actually. My older brother, myself, and sister don't like live at home anymore but my 3 younger brothers do and we still see each other at least a few times a month for family stuff. I think we were all spread out in age enough that we each got our moments.

    Edit: spelling.

  • I have another one, brought to you based on the GA story where the dad was just arrested for killing his child...

I think the punishment should be much harsher if you deliberately murder an innocent child.

This is not intended to slam women with large families. Disclaimer.

However, I am starting to believe that a lot of today's problems: social, environmental, political, economic, etc... are because there are just too many damn people competing for resources. And I think we seriously need to think about how our breeding impacts this.

I agree. That's part of the reason why DH and I have talked about adopting if we decide we want more than 2 children.

I'll have to find a link to it later, but I was at a conference yesterday with Bill Nye as the speaker (a nerd conference), and he was talking about population growth, CO2, and how we're basically going to have to start living differently if the population keeps growing like it is because between the resources and environmental impact, we can't sustain the recent trends.

I think they should send the children crossing the boarder back to their home country (unless they have parents here legally, which I don't know why they wouldn't already be with them). 50,000+ already and not stopping, estimating at 140k. If they want to come here, why should they be granted rights above the people who are trying to go through the legal process??
I agree. I don't mind if someone comes to the US and takes the proper steps to become a citizen (I have no idea what those steps are), but people who are in this country illegally should NOT be given care or public aid above those who ARE citizens.
You read my mind on this topic.
  • @LadyXaverian what do you prefer? Illegal Immigrants?
But per Webters "Alien: a foreigner, especially one who is not a naturalized citizen of the country where they living." It's not meant as a derogatory title.

They require money and education and resources-- things which most undocumented immigrants have no access to. I know because I've done it legally.

Who are these undocumented immigrants who are given more care or aid than citizens? Just curious. My assumption is that most citizens have a lot of advantages that undocumented immigrants don't.
  • In N out is hands down, by far, superior to any fast food burger chain, including 5 Guys. And now I want a double double and some fries.
Double double where I'm from is a coffee with 2 shots of cream and 2 tsp of sugar. And now I am missing my Tim Hortons. Waaah!

I visited in Vegas and was not that impressed. I do love me some 5 Guys though.

I think it's a west coast thing. I wasn't impressed by 5 guys, but I had grown up on In N Out. In college, the nearest one was a 2 hour drive through and over Lake Tahoe. We made that trip some weekends just for the burgers :)

While i agree that people should come over legally, its a long process. The pastor at my church lived here for 7 years before he was able to become a citizen. He was from Canada for anyone wondering and then my husband had a friend in high school who it took his family 10 years to finish the whole process. His school threw a party for the kids. But again, its be best if people took the legal approach, but also if they are trying to get away from drugs or sex trafficking I can't really blame them for coming in illegally.

My UO is that I hate Chipotle.

Children and teens brought to Lackland will be provided with education, foster care programs, and "behavioral treatment centers." The projected cost of such programs, as well as the cost of the housing, has not been disclosed to U.S. taxpayers.
The federal government was forced to utilize Lackland as its own facilities can no longer accommodate the number of illegal immigrants waiting to be processed, reports state.
At the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) sector alone, more than 1,000 illegal immigrants are being apprehended per day.

This is from our local paper.

On the big family note. I never felt neglected, my parents took great care of the 6 of us and love my siblings, biological or not. I just feel that I didn't really get to spend that much one on one time with my mom. I would trade it for less siblings though and now that we were all grown she spends individual time with us. I think it was harder growing up because we were so close on age. There is only an 8 year age gap from youngest to oldest and three of us are within a year and a half

  • My friends with tons of siblings always had such close/fun households! My best friend was a middle child of 8, and I adored going to her house. Such a loving a creative bunch.

I would agree on the maternity pics especially when the dad is also shirtless. Even if he has a nice body I'm just like weird... So very weird.
My BFF did a pic of her husband, 3 year old son, and newborn daughter shirtless. Then one of just the son and daughter shirtless (they looked naked from the angle it was taken). I know it was supposed to be natural and beautiful, but it looked weird and creepy to me!

  • 1.) I also read that first post as "bikini." Must be a summer thing!

2.) MH is philosophically opposed to having more than two biological children, as well. He thinks it's just socially and ecologically irresponsible. I sort of had my heart set on three, but I do understand his position, and we are not opposed to growing our family further through adoption. I only have one sibling, and my mother had only one but my dad had four siblings. I remember, as a kid, that visiting my dad's family was just a lot more fun because there were so many cousins/aunts/uncles to see. My mom's side was fine, too, but I only had 2 cousins on that side. I don't know, I guess I've always envied families with more children.

3.) I agree with @Lanatir regarding growing something of your own. I have tried a couple of times, but it's not easy where I live. We live in the mountains, at a fairly high altitude (about 8300ft), so even in summer our nights are quite cool. Also, our soil isn't naturally suited for gardening. Those are my excuses. Now, there are loads of ways to get around those excuses and have a successful garden in our locale, I just haven't had the time/financial resources/energy to do it. Yet. I have every intention of having a successful garden one day. In the meantime, we try to shop at farmer's markets to buy locally (within the state) grown produce, and we've also been members of a CSA in the past (though we aren't this year).
