Cloth Diapering

How much have you spent?

So I'm a FTM and have been cloth diapering since LO's birth (3.22.2014).
I'm creating a spreadsheet because I was curious how much I've actually spent so far on cloth diapering.  The total is right around $500 (ouch!)
I blame myself mostly for wanting to try everything and also buying new when I could have bought used that was before I knew about seconds, swaps, co-ops, etc!
Unfortunately I am itching to get some more SunBaby pockets, GMD prefolds and hemp doublers LOL I think that will be it for a while unless it's a trade.
How much have you spent??

  • About $400, but I've not sold anything yet, so I imagine the net cost will be lower.

Too much... and I'm not even joking.

The last I looked, I think I was at $800.  And that was before I got TT fitteds and my newborn stash.

And I also bought 2 Blueberry Coveralls and a dozen flats.

However, I have started replacing the elastic in my 4.0 diapers.  Those should last another 1 1/2 years.

I'm still in denial that we are only having 2 kids.

  • Way too much. Over 1K for sure. But I love my stash and we'll have at least 2 kids, though maybe just 2  :((

It catches up with you quick.  And when you start adding up those "small" purchases you start seeing how much you've spent.

Originally I thought I was around $600 when I started.  I added everything up and discovered I was over $800 at that point.

I now ask myself if I really need something.  I also find different using for items.   My newborn prefolds are stuffing my son's pockets.  They are also used as burp cloths and snot rags.  I pack more flats in my diaper bag then I need for the day.  They make excellent rags.

I can safely say that pretty much everything I've bought for cloth diapering has been well loved.

  • Too much! My mom just told me over the weekend that I was not saving money by cloth diapering. Although, money saving was not my intent - DS has super sensitive skin. I haven't added it up but I'd say around $1,000 and I'm ok with that.

  • Yes!! @sarenu1
Even after going through my Inbox I've seen undetailed PayPal receipts that I know are cloth diaper purchases but don't even remember what they are! lol
So I just rounded up which brings me to about $500
I plan to do some swaps/selling off what I haven't or have barely used to get a few more things I need. That makes it justifiable right?
When I told DH today he said "Well it's still cheaper than sposies and I like CDing.  Love that man!"

  • I've only spent around $350 for a newborn and one size stash. I've got a mix of prefolds flats and pockets. That also includes wet bags and pail liners. Watching for seconds sales and buying from clearance was my strategy.

  • Under $700 if you include gift card purchases. Under $600 if you don't include gift cards. That includes the NB stash I have going now, and the many many covers I have now. But I'll be diapering 2 at the same time in a couple months.

    I stopped caring after $1,500.  :-O

But I've sold off what I don't like and we will at least be having 2 kids (hoping for 3).  Most of my stash is BG 4.0, which are usually $17.95.  I figure that on average a disposable is $0.20.  So, a diaper will pay for itself after 10 months if you're using it about twice a week.  DS is 20 months, so basically all of my BG are now free.  Plus, the stuff that I have left, I anticipate to have a higher resale value than the other stuff I didn't like (GMD prefolds, thirsties covers, TT fitteds).  If my BG's are in play condition by the time I'm done with kids, I'm totally fine with that.

Also, DH made the mistake of telling me that since I BF for 14 months I saved us a crap load of money on formula so it was easier for him to tolerate the diaper spending.  Yeah, that was a BIG mistake!!
I am so using this for justification.  I exclusively breastfed our first for 8 months and our second is going on 7 months now.  I think that's worth a couple new prefolds and covers.

I am going to rough estimate around 750. And I know I'll be spending more as I find new stuff. @GerardSyreeta‌ I have a ton of sunbaby pocket. I'll be willing to part with a few. PM me if you want.

  • Hmmm do we count and adjust for what we've gotten back by selling?

I spent about $200 on my nb stash.  I've already gotten like 60 back and hope to get another 100.  I shopped smart and spent most of my money on my fitteds.

My OS stash.  I've spent about $500.  And I think I have a LOT to show for that money.  Considering I have 10 BB Covers, 16 AIOS, 24 size one prefolds, a handful of customs, a dozen or two dozen hemp inserts, and a dozen BB hemp inserts.  But if you account for the money I'm getting back for my NB stash, I've spent less.  Although, for real whatever money comes back to me for my newborn stuff, is getting invested right back into OS dipes.

  • I have spent somewhere in the lower $500 range. I keep telling myself that I don't need more every time I see another diaper I like.

  • Not too much on diapers.  But once I add in wet bags, CD safe creams, sprayer, cloth wipes and solution, trash can, pail liners, various detergents I have tried, snappis, spray bottles, disposable liners, fleece liners, Baby legs, and other accessories I can't think of now, the total grows....
Even if the cost of cloth diapering equaled the cost disposables it is soo worth it to me.  I would do it over again and again.
  • I love these posts! I'm jealous of those beautiful colorful stashes!

Around 300-400. That includes NB and OS covers snappis wetbags/pail liners/garbage can microfiber cloths coconut oil and another diaper ointment

I made flats liners and wipes from old sheets around my house my MIL and grandma in law.

We use the same laundry detergent for clothes so that's no additional expense.

I do have a small cart waiting for me on Alva but it's only 20.
  • $690.76.

That is a full nb stash plus a OS stash that will work for 2 in diapers. I basically have a stash of OS pockets, and a very generous stash of prefolds and covers.

I have sold a few things totaling $78.00 so my net cost is actually $612.76.

It does seem like a lot, especially since cost was one of our main factors in choosing cloth, but it is less than what we would have spent one sposies for 1. #2 is on the way and I don't have to spend a cent on diapers. (Of course I already have spent a few dollars on #2, and will probably spend at least a few more.)

The only problem I have with my number is that I pretty decent amount of that was used. I keep meaning to go back and calculate what it all would have cost new, but I haven't gotten around to it.

  • I'd say around $800 maybe a little less. And that's for diapers, wet bags, wipes, ect. But it's about to shoot up... :/ I have 3 TT GCs this month, 1 next month and 2 more in the works. :\">

    P.s don't google TT, it's addicting!

  • OMG I feel a little sick to my stomach... I made so many smaller purchases that I didn't realize how much I have actually spent. These are my totals not counting wet bags, cloth wipes, cloth safe creams, and wipe solution. All of these were bought new but a lot were on sale or discounted. Includes shipping and tax.

    12 OS RaRZ Pockets, 1 EcoPosh, 1 Cover = $260.95 (10 are prints, 6 have bamboo inserts)
    1 BG 4.0 Albert = $16.95
4 BG Elementals = $109.51 (Carroll, Lovelace, Top Hat, Piccadilly)
    7 Tots Bots V3 = $159.79 (All prints, 4 storytime)
7 OS Little Bee Company Pockets = $120
    6 OS Lil Bums Pockets = $66.25
    2 Moraki AIO's organic = $46
    2 Twinkie Tush Fusion = $93.60
    4 WAHM Hybrid Fitted's "Cutesy Cloth" = $138

Sold two Grovia's for a profit of $7.31 Sold one BG freetime that I had gotten for free that I didn't like for a profit of $16.95

So total is $987.66 for 46 changes.

Hopefully that number will go down a little once I sell my "Little Bee" diapers that don't fit DS right.
I definitely could have done cloth diapering for less $ if I wasn't so hooked on cute prints! I feel a little better though when I look at it as an average of $21 per diaper and they are all pockets or AIO's and mostly natural fibers and HTF prints.

I wanted to CD mainly to save money, and we're still well under the cost of disposables, but I've spent more than I really had to because, you know, cuteness. My weakness is mainly in cute covers, which luckily are less expensive than pockets and AIOs, but they are starting to add up!
I try to save where I can and buy less expensive brands, but I've splurged on a few BB covers (still bought on sale) and such.
I have a spreadsheet with the cost of everything, down the shipping and taxes. I've spent just under $700 including so far, but I've got a bit of a wish list going.
I haven't sold anything off yet, but my LO is just starting to fit into my OS stash so I am going to try to recoup some costs reselling my NB stash. But I plan to buy that wish list stuff with what I make from selling off ...

  • If you include all the accessories, right at 400$. I had a 350$ budget for the startup and have spent an extra 50$ on extra one size covers. That's not including gifts or things that got bought with store credit from returns. If you count those- probably close to 550$

My current stash is more than sufficient to get us to about 9 months- then we may need more size 2 prefolds. With that we should be good until potty training. Although I doubt I'll make it that far without buying more covers :)

I've figured that I'm just below $500 for diapers and probably about another $100 for things like wetbags, pail liners, cream etc. But I figured with the cost of disposables I would have spent almost that much by now and I don't have to buy any more CDs so pretty much everything from here on will be savings. I also have a couple of diapers that are in EUC that I might sell because I'm not crazy about them but we will see.

  • Nvm, I'm closer to 2k. Oh well. I wouldn't change much if I could do it again.

  • I don't keep track. I love cloth and am always excited about something when I buy it (except that one day when my brain broke and i regretted buying two TT fitteds on impulse)

I've probably spent around $500ish? We also had our nb stash entirely gifted to us and a small portion of our OS stash as well

I could never buy another diaper and have plenty for future kids.  but we all know that's all just what we tell ourselves

  • We've spent $788.14.  That includes a very large OS stash (mix of prefolds & covers, pockets and AIOs) and a NB stash which is currently out on loan.  There's a few things I currently have listed for sale.  We received other things as gifts that probably came to around $200.

We have a number of items that I believe will sell when we are done, i.e. OS simplex, GMD prefolds, which should bring our net down.

  • In the $500-$600 range. My stash is almost all Workhorses, which are all in great shape. We are TTC, so I'll definitely get my money out of those with a second kid. I have a ton of covers, but will have to start almost from scratch if we don't have another girl!

  • As of now I'm at $700.  $250 for a newborn/size 1 stash, $350 for a OS stash that's about 3/4 of the way done, and another $100 for accessories (wet bags, pail liners, wipes, etc).  Of course that number is going to go up as I finish the OS stash or succumb to peer pressure and buy some TT's.   As long as I don't hate CDing as soon as we start, I'm happy with that.

I just added this up.  After the stash post a few weeks ago, i made a spread sheet and added up all the receipts...scary!  It was $998.  That was for a full NB stash and a large OS stash.  Daycare will only take prestuffed pockets of all the same kind, and they change every hour, so we have 17 BG 4.0, 6 Fuzzibunz, and some other random pockets.  And we use AI2s or prefolds at home.

I do have some NB and OS grovia AIOs to sell soon so i hope to get some money back.  But i want to buy ALL THE PRINTS!
