How much have you spent?

Re: How much have you spent?

  • I don't have an exact number but I think around $165 for my NB stash. I haven't bought all the essentials (pail liner, creams, etch), though.

BFP #1 ended in MMC. Discovered Oct 2005 @10w5d, baby stopped growing around 6w. D&C.
    BFP#2 Nov 2005. Baby's heart stopped @ 8w3d. D&C Jan 2006. Trisomy 18

  • $690.76. That is a full nb stash plus a OS stash that will work for 2 in diapers. I basically have a stash of OS pockets, and a very generous stash of prefolds and covers. I have sold a few things totaling $78.00 so my net cost is actually $612.76. It does seem like a lot, especially since cost was one of our main factors in choosing cloth, but it is less than what we would have spent one sposies for 1. #2 is on the way and I don't have to spend a cent on diapers. (Of course I already have spent a few dollars on #2, and will probably spend at least a few more.) The only problem I have with my number is that I pretty decent amount of that was used. I keep meaning to go back and calculate what it all would have cost new, but I haven't gotten around to it.
I went through my spreadsheet and figured it out. Had I bought everything in my stash new from cottonbabies, superstash, nicki's, and assunta, my total would have been $1426.71, but that does not include shipping. My actual paid $690 DOES include shipping.

1426.71 is probably much closer to what I would have spent on sposies.

Well over $1400. I have bought all new which includes 38 RaR, a full stash of prefolds in every size, a whole bunch of home made small and medium pockets, a bunch of newborn pockets and AIOs, a few fitteds of every size, many covers, wipes, snappis, everything. I have 3 in diapers (a 2.5 year old and twin 15 month olds) and I have another boy coming in August so we require a massive stash. The reason we bought new is because we plan on having more kids and with such a big family, buying new was worth it to us as the diapers will get great use and some will probably even wear out. For the past 14 months we have been going through 20+ diapers a day so we still are saving a TON using cloth and we will probably never need to buy diapers again..... not that I won't ;)

  • Oh man, I just finished totalling and it's over $800. Eek, don't tell MH!

That's for a whole stash of small and medium sized gPants with gCloth inserts, my newborn stash of workhorses, prefolds, and covers, Grovia hybrid shells and inserts, BG 4.0s, and some kawaii GNHW and p&n.

I wish I had done more research before we started in 2012 with Raegan. At the time, the hybrid gDiaper system with cloth inserts seemed like a good route. The smalls paid for themselves in about 6month's time, so we stayed with it for the mediums. I never even came across the BB or GroVia systems until she started to grow out of the medium g's this spring.

I think I could have spent less and got more if I had gone with a mix of styles. Oh well... with #2 here now, we will get good use out of what we have and still save money over disposals in the long run.

  • @sarenu1, I was curious exactly how much I saved by breastfeeding and I found this article.

The answer: $1,733.75.  (And this was based on prices 10 years ago).  I worked my ASS off to breastfeed and pump at work for a year.  I definitely feel like I earned that amount (and more!).  You definitely get credit for the time you are breastfeeding!

Also, I thought I remembered seeing something about disposables costing $700.  But I think that was just for the first year.  I found this article which calculates the cost through potty training.

https://www.babyworks.com/cost-comparisons (the numbers are at the very bottom of the page)

    Lowest estimate: $2,671.00

Yep, I feel zero guilt now.  I LOVE my cloth diapers and I will continue to buy whatever diapers I want.  I'm still saving money over disposables.
