Baby Names

Ive heard this is the place to be ;) Name help!

I am due 12/11. Our ultrasound to find out the sex is 7/25. We would like to have solid names picked out. We like Gunner Michael for a boy (middle name after SO). For a girl...help! I would like the middle name to be Elaine (after my mom). SO hates my top 3 first name choices...paisley, lillian (nn lilly), and abigail :(. We both like Harper, Chloe, Zoe, Nova, Becca, River, Savannah, Skylar, Scarlett, Sawyer, Sailor, Noelle, and Andi. Harper is prob at the top. Ugh, i dont know. Any suggestions? Hate or love our choices? Thanks!!!! :)

  • Zoe and Scarlett are my favorites. What about Rebecca instead of Becca?

You have quite the mix. I like noelle a lot. I really hate Harper. It's very trendy and will sound so dated a decade from now, (think jessica and Jennifer in the 80s) plus it makes me think of harping (nagging) on someone. Sawyer is terrible for a girl, but i like it for a boy. Becca is all nn to me, but I do like Rebekah/Rebecca. Suggestions: Ivy, Madeline, Rachel, Leah, Lydia, Charlotte, Caroline, Vivian.

I don't care for Gunner at all! Sounds like a dog's name to me.

But for girls I like Scarlett and Chloe. I like Harper and Lillian but feel like they are too popular. At least where I am. The rest are just NMS.

  • I have seriously been on so many sites (nymbler too). I dont know why this is so hard. I agree, with certain names sounding like a dog (Chloe, River, Gunner) But i chalked that up to everyone using ppl names for dogs and not the other way around. Harper IS trendy. Those names are the only ones out of thousands...
  • Oops forgot to comment on Gunner - I actually think it's kind of cute personally.

Has your SO suggested any names? I'm trying to pinpoint your style, but it seems you like a little of everything. Do you like trendy? Piper girly? Annabelle Old lady? Beatrice Nature? Iris

  • I am a little bit of everything :). Im that way in every area of my life i think lol. My SO is the worst. His two name suggestions? Lisa and Hunter. Both for a girl. I know....
  • But i guess more girly than anything? Nothing toooo old or toooo trendy (i do like Harper tho).
  • We also have huge families n huge circles so alot of names are taken that have been suggested :(

......Hunter......for a girl no less...... No....... Maybe he will be more helpful when you find out the sex. Just throwing a few more out, Isla (eye-la), Penelope, juniper, Vada, Daphne, Adelaide, Audra, Camilla.

  • I also like Violet. But my SO is throwing out all "flower names". :((
  • I love Harper, I have one myself ;) it was the only name we picked out and were going to use it no matter boy or girl. We have a DS. I personally have not known anyone with the name. Of all your other names I like Savannah. It just sounds really pretty to me.
  • Ohhhh...there is a difference between Gunner and Gunnar? I honestly thought it was just a spelling thing and i was ok with both lol :-? . Could you tell me the pronunciation difference? Thanks!!!!!! :)
  • I like Sailor its very different but its still cute. What about incorporating your SO's name somehow for a girl?
  • His name is Jonathan Michael. Our first boy is Benjamin (nn ben or benny) after SO's uncle who passed. He wants to use Michael but not John. We are trying to stay away from any J first name as that letter has been way, and i mean way, over used in the family. Im difficult i know. I am sorry and i appreciate every comment!
  • I totally understand! I wasnt sure about naming my first daughter Adeline bc on my bio dads side all granddaughters names start with A. How do you feel about Makayla?
  • Makayla and other similar names are ok. Im just waiting to see a name and say "thats it". I do like some of these suggestions for sure ;). I have a feeling this is a girl and ofcourse we cant agree on anything

Benjamin is such a great, solid name! To me, Benjamin and Gunner don't go together at all. What about:

Connor (goes great with Michael, haha ;)  )
    Ryan
    Andrew
    Chase
    Colin
    Gavin
    Carter
    Lucas

  • What about patrick Michael? My SO and I do like Gunner but if my mind is changed than i would like to name the baby after a family name if its a boy. Patrick is a family name....or is michael john hideous?
  • tlongtlong member
Patrick Michael is great together! It's actually DH's name. :)  I don't care for Michael John, but I don't mind Michael Jonathan.

  • My SO also said no to all flower names but then suggested Holly. Kind of unfair he is vetoing Elaine when you have a DS named after his side and agreed to a DS named for him. Gunnar is a real name (not one I like) whereas Gunner seems like a profession.

  • Keep: Lillian, Abigail, Harper, Chloe, Zoe, River, Scarlett, Noelle, Andi

Toss: Nova, Becca, Savannah, Skylar, Sawyer (boy name), Sailor

    Add:

    Alexis Elaine
    Bethany Elaine
    Catherine Elaine
    Esme Elaine
    Frances Elaine
    Melody Elaine
    Nancy Elaine
    Nicole Elaine

  • Gunnar is spelled with an "A" ......you get more love if you spell it correctly! I think that Gunnar is a nice German name. For a girl .....Freya or Lael come to mind.
  • SO didnt veto Elaine...im sorry if i said something that sounded like that. It will
most likely be the mn. Ive seen it spelled gunner and gunnar. I looked up the pronunciation and it sounded like gunnar is pronounced like "Goonah"? Whereas gunner is just like it is spelled. Anyone know for sure??? Also, im def considering Adalaide and Ivy from the suggestions. I like Adaline too.
  • Just worried that Elaine does not flow as the mn with adelaide, adaline, or ivy :/. Naming is hard.

I think you're right about Adeline (with the line sounding ending) and Adelaide, but I think Adeline (Lynn sounding end) and Ivy Elaine sounds fine. What about Madeline/Madeleine Elaine?

  • Im not a fan of most "M" names and i have no reasoning to back that up :/. I do like your suggestion of different ways to pronounce Adeline. IF we fall in love with a name that does not flow wuth Elaine, we will use Noelle as the middle name instead. Naming is hard enough and my mom knows i love her with all my heart ;). Id like to use Elaine as mn if i can though. You ladies are so helpful :D
  • I really like Patrick Michael!  That's a lovely name.  I really dislike Gunner.  Why would you want to have the first syllable of your child's name be Gun?  Yuck.

For girls I like Abigail, Rebecca, Noelle, Ivy, and Zoe.  I think they all sound fine with Elaine.
  • Im definetly rethinking Gunner. It's not completely out but im rethinking it. I may be leaning more towards Patrick Michael (both family names) or maybe Michael Abram (again family names). As far as girl names go, my SO just said "no" to the suggested names i like frim here. *long loud sigh*. I think I'm done talking about names with him until December 1st lol. Seriously :-S
  • I like Abram Patrick!

I know most won't agree but I think River Elaine is perfect. Love it. Otherwise

Daphne, Iris, Audra, Stella, Leila, Zola, Freya

  • Thanks ladies :). I told SO i was rethinking Gunner. I suggested Patrick Michael or Michael Abram (ive mentioned them in the past too). He didnt say much which is actually good lol. Im going to wait a bit and revisit the girl names because he turns down everything. Im glad hes involved but he is soooooooo (overly?) opinionated about this when i just want my way haha. %-( LOL
  • Yeah, I can never get behind Gunner. My husband drove tanks in the Army and he talks about his "gunner". It relates to nothing but violence.
  • Please trash Gunner for your boy name. Also, get rid of Sawyer, Harper, and Sailor for your girl name. Good luck picking a name, it seems like it'd be super fun but it's actually nerve wracking and hard.

  • I like Noelle, Harper, and Chloe.  I'm not a fan of Gunner but maybe where you are from its more popular.  I'm from NY and I have never heard of anyone using that name here.  I'm a teacher so I have heard it all.  It makes me think of someone in another state hunting for a meal.  IDK thats just what popped into my mind.  But go with whatever you both like. I would say look online at websites for other girls names.  Noelle is also cute if you celebrate xmas and since you are having a December baby.

    All Welcome
  • I would never name a sweet, beautiful, innocent baby after a deadly weapon. :(
  • Also, not a fan of Gunner. I can't picture a grown man with this name.

I do think Patrick Michael is a solid name and I like Michael as a fn paired with Abram.

I love PP's suggestion of Abram Patrick or even Abram Michael. Benjamin and Abram pair very well to me.

For girls I love Savannah and Ivy and only like Noelle. I'm sick of Harper and Abigail. Abigail is lovely but overused and I can't stand the nn Abby.

I love Elaine as a first name option! So pretty and underused.

Of the names you both like, Chloe, and Zoe are fine. I like Noelle, Lillian and Abigail. Really dislike the other choices. And I'm sorry but I agree Gunner is pretty bad. :/
