17.99 dumb FTM questions

I wish the pedi would have gone over this at the 9 month appointment. Or I should have asked. I thought about asking the FF board, but I'm not sure if they are under a year or whatever. If anyone has insite to these questions feel free to answer. Dr. Google didn't pull much up.

Were FF btw. We tried the BLW way, but she isn't good at swallowing yet. She much prefers easy to swallow purées than watermelon, or anything besides cut up spagetti.
1. When do I stop the oatmeal cereal for breakfast? When I stop what do I feed her? Regularbreakfast? Eggs? Fruit?

2. She cries if she doesn't get 8 oz at night (now mixed half and half with formula and wm) if she is only supposed to get max 16 oz of wm a day how will I work this out? Girl loves her milk.

Sorry for another wm post, but I'm 100% confused.

:) thanks ladies!

Re: 17.99 dumb FTM questions

  • 1. I stopped oatmeal when he was probably 9 months old. He just wasn't interested in it anymore, probably because his palate developed a little and he realized it's disgusting. I give him eggs, fruit, and yogurt for breakfast
    2. I think some kids just drink a ton of milk. Apparently it can be an issue if they only want milk and no food, but chances are things will be fine. I didn't know about the 16 oz max of wcm, btw...

  • Ditto others, BF here, so not quite the same, but I definitely noticed a switch to more solids/less milk intake last month. And I definitely second @Casey78's thing re: the bedtime pouch (it also helped her get over constipation from suddenly eating more solids). Maybe try that before the bottle if you're worried about milk volume, but she's eating enough calories overall?

For breakfast, we typically do fruit, eggs or whole-grain waffle, toast with cream cheese/PB, etc. basically just regular breakfast food, but limited to things she can pick up easily. Some days we default to a banana and a handful of Cheerios ;-)

Re: the nighttime bottle, could you water it down? I feel like that's a thing? Did I just make that up??

    Clueless FTM here too ;)

We never did oatmeal. Tried it and he hates it. We do normal food for all meals. He usually gets fruit, some Cheerios, maybe some yogurt, waffle or bagel for breakfast.

As for milk consumption my pedi said to try to not go over 24 ounces.

We give him a bottle right when he wakes up, and he usually takes about 4-6 ounces. Then breakfast foods about an hour later.

Lunch is usually around 11:30. He gets a sippy with water at lunch.

Bottle before nap at 12:30 (6-8 ounces)

Snack about 3 with a sippy of milk. Maybe 4 ounces?

Dinner of solids and a sippy of water or very watered down juice.

8 ounce bottle at bed time

Edit: We will be all WCM by Monday. He only gets 1 bottle of formula a day at this point. His last bottle of the day
  • I would offer her whatever she seems ready for and likes, with some variety here and there. I am enjoying the stage where at least LO will TRY a bite of whatever I give him, whereas DS1 is a bit pickier. As far as WCM, @NKaeding‌ is right, 16-24 oz per day, so I think it's fine to give it as three 8 oz servings.

We are basically done with the WCM transition and Ellie was drinking 25oz of formula a day.

She's drinking probably 10-15oz of milk a day. She's naturally just increased her food intake (she is a bottomless pit) and thrown bottles aside. It's really happened this week.

As for milk consumption, I was told the max is 16-24oz.

The big thing for us has been following her lead and seeing what she wants.

This is pretty much us. We are on WM now. She gets one bub in the morning and one in the evening from me. Not sure how many during the day - maybe one or two? Each bub is usually 6oz milk.

We don't do baby oatmeal, but we do Quaker 'Maple and Brown Sugar' flavour regular ole adult oatmeal. It's good for keeping the pipes running. She loves it!

We pretty much do BLW with her, though. I spread a bunch of stuff out on the tray and she picks at whatever she likes. Like @NKaeding‌ we have a bottomless pit. :)

You could try fried eggs with some ketchup. We had that for dinner last night. I fry them easy over, then cut them up so the runny yolk is all over the whites and add a little ketchup for sweetness. They tend to be a little slimy by then, so they slide right down the gullet. :)

    It is messy, though. ;)

  • I'm actually so glad you asked this b/c I have been struggling with these same issues too.

FWIW- P still eats baby cereal for breakfast, but he only recently started liking it.  It took till about 10 months till he would eat more than a spoonful and I have a few containers to use up.

Our goal is to stay around 16-24oz of WCM too and just follow his lead.  Feeding has always been a stressor for me just b/c of his birthweight so sometimes I get really obsessed with how much he's eaten, etc.  I made myself a promise that when he turned one, I would relax.  By now, he should know if he's hungry, so that's what I'm going with.
  • @Hilaboo86‌ I'm wondering if you should ditch the oatmeal? Or has it helped her pooping? When I feed Lucas oatmeal consistently, it slows him down to the point of vomiting. But that's regular oatmeal, not the baby kind.

We do yogurt for breakfast every day. That's a "real" food that's easy to swallow. Also some healthy banana bread, or eggs (whisked with milk before scrambling for a better texture), or Cheerios, or whatever he'll take. Just keep offering! She'll get there eventually.

FWIW, my pedi said up to 20oz of WCM.

My pedi said 16-24oz of WCM a day. I offer it to DD in a straw sippy with meals and a couple other times during the day. She's taking about 12-16oz right now and she nurses 2-4 times a day. For breakfast her go-tos are Cheerios, banana, and eggs. I haven't given her peanut butter yet but I'm planning on trying that soon. We just recently ran out of the baby oatmeal, which she loves, and I offered her regular oatmeal which I ground up and cooked in wcm, but she was not having it.

I've asked the pedi a million times if this was a reason she is a slow pooper. He kept saying she needed the iron. She is formula fed? Also, can't too much iron back you up?

You have confirmed what I've been thinking all along. Ugh. I may need a new, smarter, pedi.

I think for us, it was especially because I was cooking the oatmeal firm so it would be easier to eat - firm enough to cut into pieces and pick up - and so it was a little dryer and getting to his belly and absorbing too much liquid. At least, that's what I'm imagining, no actual medical confirmation :) So I'm not sure if baby oatmeal would do the same thing, but I think that would be something easy enough to test out - try yogurt for a few days instead and see if it makes a difference.

  • 1) you can do oatmeal & breakfast food. We do.

2.) you can dilute 2 ounces with water & ice. That's how I do the 8 ounces over the day.
