Ignoring Pregnancy Rules?

When I was pregnant the first time, I was shocked to learn all the new things that pregnant women can't do!  All this time I thought I just couldn't drink...now I can't eat sandwiches, eat hot dogs, drink coffee, drink pop, and I about lost it when I read that I couldn't have soft serve ice cream.  What the hell was I supposed to eat?  Lettuce?....give me a break.

Personally I drink coffee, pop, and lunch meat/hot dogs.  (And the ice cream thing is a peice of shit...totally going to DQ).  I LOVE sushi, but I get past my guilt to eat it.  I'll still order it, but just get cooked stuff.

Has anyone been blatantly ignoring some of the pregnancy rules?  Maybe we will all learn some more rules we are suposed to follow!

Re: Ignoring Pregnancy Rules?

  • I've never heard of the ice cream, why is that?
  • Loading the player...
  • The same thing as the lunch meat, Listeria and other bacteria.  Apparently if the the nossel isn't kept clean, bacteria can grow since it is not kept as cool as the rest of the ice cream in the tank.  I haven't read that one in a while, so who knows where I saw it.

  • Me me me! I ignore most things. I did with my #1. When you have MS and really fancy a runny egg and the books say no, I say stuff them.
As long as you are sensible and stick to eat by dates and if in doubt throw it out rules etc most things are fine in moderation. Good quality produce you eat regularly anyway are more than likely fine and it's all down to the choice of the mother.

I can't see Italians giving up salami and the like (my inlaws are Italian and laughed when I said not supposed to eat those types of meats). I think most of it is scaremongering and I use my own judgment. If we listened to everything they say not to eat/drink/do we might as well live in a bubble for 9m! But this is just my opinion.

LOL!!  I actually knew that one too.  No salad bars...

  • My OB says most of those 'rules' are garbage. Lunch meat is fine; she does prefer I buy the prepackaged and get the furthest date I can. Caffeine in moderation. The only thing I quit cold turkey was alcohol.

I wouldn't say "ignoring rules" because my doctor never told me to completely eliminate many of those things from my diet, but I do enjoy them in moderation.

I never drank much Coke or coffee before, and now I'm maybe 2 cups a week. I still take occasional sips of beer. I never ate much lunch meat or hot dogs before, and now I have them maybe twice a month. I see no problem with cooked sushi if it's from a reputable place. I didn't eat soft serve often before, but I certainly wouldn't turn it down this pregnancy. Skip the free soft serve at Jason's Deli? No way.
  • These aren't really rules. They're just guidelines to minimize risks and for a healthier pregnancy. There's no shame in not following them.

  • I'm a rule breaker by nature so yeah, I break most of them.

You can have deli meat as long as you heat up the meat to the point of it steaming first. :)
  • I read an article during my last pregnancy that talked about the differences in what is legit or not in other cultures - apparently in parts of Europe, during pregnancy, they urge you to drink a glass of red wine a day, but strongly suggest you don't eat raw vegetables.

Also, Japanese moms to be eat sushi throughout their pregnancy (I do too, and my Dr. said it's fine as long as it's a reputable sushi place...no grocery store sushi).

The nurse at my first appointment this time gave me the run down of what not to do - don't get your heart rate over 140, don't lift more than 15-20lbs, etc. All of which are happening. I do CrossFit and do  both of those on a daily basis.  Just chat with your Dr if you are worried or concerned about something, and they will hopefully give you good guidance.
  • I'm following all the food rules, but I'm still riding horses, and will until I feel like my balance is influenced or that I'm uncomfortable.
Looking forward to meeting our first child in January 2015!

  • The only "rules" I was given were no alcohol, no lunch meat unless it's heated, limit caffeine, and no sushi.

So far I've followed them. I don't really like lunch meat anyway and I always drink decaf coffee.

That said, if I want a sip of alcohol later on I'll probably take it. If I want lunch meat, I'll heat it. If I want an occasional Dr. Pepper, BFD.

Listeria does make me really anxious though. I'm really careful about washing my fruits and vegetables.

  • I'm following the rules in the book the panic free pregnancy. I'm eating sushi, anything I want really and having 1-2 glasses of wine a week.
  • My doctor told me if I wanted to eat the lunch meat, heat it up in the microwave before hand and make sure a hot dog is throughly cooked.  Also most women drink caffeine on a regular basis, so he said even 1-2 caffeinated drinks a day won't do any harm, but once the baby starts kicking I may want to refrain because it will be like a gymnast in there.

Not to freak you out but my husband was in the hospital for 3 days with botulism from Dairy Queen where we live near DC. I'd steer clear of soft serve in the meantime and stick to the scoopable stuff.
  • All I've wanted since my BFP is Subway and I don't usually get my subs toasted. I've caved twice so far. I completely get the urge to have something you aren't supposed to. On the flip side of that I'd never forgive myself if my sub gave me Listeria and hurt the baby.

As PPs said moderation and reputable establishments are key.
  • I don't follow the food rules while pregnant. And if someone is worried about listeria and won't eat lunch meat, then forget about ordering a fountain drink or tea at a restaurant.  If those nozzles or tea urns aren't cleaned properly then there is a chance of listeria from them too!  Lots of the other rules I do follow - no contact sports, roller coasters, stuff like that.  And definitely no alcohol, not even a sip.  I've sat through too many FASD workshops and trainings to ever risk it.

  • I think for the most part the rules are "guidleines" Eating raw fish can be risky even if you are NOT prego. I do not eat raw sushi when pregnant but I totally eat deli meat - just get the good stuff, but I'd do that prego or not.....I think dont smoke and drink are pretty good rules to follow but the food? Use your best judgement!

HAhahahahahahaha.  I WISH I could convince my toddler of this.  Bed rest and all, if I don't carry her around, it's kicks to the stomach and punching in the face...  I do have to make DH carry the laundry baskets, though.

  • I do cut out alcohol, but normally I live by "If I didn't get sick eating that/there pre-pregnancy, it's safe during pregnancy."

  • I'm having a soda aversion (weird.) so I haven't been drinking much of that. I'm not a coffee drinker so that, coupled with the soda aversion, I happen to not be getting any caffeine. If I wasn't having a soda aversion, I'd be getting some caffeine (and artificial sweeteners, which I was told to avoid, but since I'm not drinking soda anyway...).

Hoagies are something I just can't give up. I don't eat them every day, but when I want a hoagie, I just want a hoagie. I had the most delicious ham and cheese one yesterday. I just make sure I get it from a reputable place and I get the stuff that moves. So for instance, if I liked Olive Loaf, I probably wouldn't get it, because I don't see that flying from the shelves! I just buy plain ham or turkey, etc.. since that's what most people buy.

I think Artificial Sweeteners and Lunchmeats were the only total no nos. I was told to only eat hot dogs if I cooked them myself to make sure they were very hot.. so that's not an issue.

So I don't know. I'm definitely a rule breaker, but this time I'm actually doing okay but not by choice lol. I just don't want to feel like I live in a bubble for the next 7 months.

You know... It's only 9 months! I can give up a couple things for 9 months for the health of my baby. It's really not the end of the world...
Risk vs. benefits. The benefits of me drinking coffee far outweigh the risks of me attacking people for not having caffeine. I'm absolutely nasty if I don't have any caffeine. I'd rather have caffeine and take the risk (which there is none if you stay below guidelines) than end up in jail due to my caffeine-withdrawing temper.

    Exactly - Risk vs. Benefit.

There was a girl at my school is who is pg.  She is a few months ahead of me and she was going off one day  telling everyone all the things she couldn't eat for risks of being unhealthy.  She said all of this as she stuffed her face with French fries and pasta salad.

I'll take some lean protein deli meat- something that is low in calories, keeps me strong and keeps me fuller longer (keeping away m/s) over carb loaded food anyday.

I don't think I've followed any of the rules throughout my two (now on third) pregnancies.

I eat sashimi at least twice a week. I'll have a small glass of wine on occasion. Soft cheeses, deli meats, etc are all fine for me.

I went skiing throughout my first pregnancy, until my jacket would no longer do up... lol. Wakeboarded and wake surfed throughout the second. Weight lifted and jogged until delivery. I'm sure there are other things I did that some would raise an eyebrow at.
  • I've definitely had McDonalds poutine a few times this week. (this may be a canadian thing?)

Not gonna lie, I've been eating more fries and pasta than I should be, but it's about the only thing that I can keep down without taking Zofran. Surprisingly (or maybe not that much), the grease of the fries settles my stomach easier than any "natural" methods. I'm throwing in fruit, veggies, and meat as I can, though <-- figures that by trying to eat it, some of it will be digested before the vomiting starts...

hey no judgment here- if you can eat it settles your stomach, great.  I enjoyed me some Wendy's the other day.

I was just more commenting on the thought process of "oh my gosh I can't have THAT, it s bad for me and it will give my listeria and kill me! I need to be healthy!! oooh French fries, yum!" of my co- worker.

    Risk vs. Benefits.

  • The only "rules" I'm aware of is no undercooked meat, no deli meat and no bean sprouts. And no alcohol. I'm following those fairly well but if some sprouts end up in my noodles I'm not going to send them back.
I've never heard of soft serve being a problem. I don't think that will stop me though - I'm sure DQ cleans those things.
I've stopped drinking diet coke but allow regular coke and other types of pop on occasion. It's the aspartame I'm concerned about.
I really, really miss good sashimi. My doctor said no though :-(.
  • I am a rule follower. I eliminate caffeine and I would never, ever drink any alcohol during pregnancy, but that is just me. I did a lot of field work in a special education class and saw many high schoolers with FAS, so sad. I usually try to avoid processed foods, so giving up lunch meat isn't really a big deal. The one thing I truly miss is sushi.

  • i've been slaying all the french fries lately.  and now i want pasta salad.  dammit.  lol

as for the rest of it...meh.  i'm ok cutting out alcohol almost completely (i can't deny having had a sip of SO's cider the other day) until i'm much farther along, since i know things are much hinkier with development during the 1T and early 2T, and even then it'll probably just be the occasional half-glass of wine.  as for the rest of it, moderation, reputable place, etc.  heated-up lunch meat just sounds gross to me, and we have plans to go for sushi with friends on friday evening (and no, i do not plan on sticking with just the cooked stuff, although i do love me some shrimp tempura).  also, even the mercury-risk fish is ok if you only have it once in a while, so spicy tuna roll, here i come.  i had soft-serve the other day, as well as several milkshakes and a blizzard.  i can't really do caffeine anyway because my intenstines hate me, but i've had a mexican coke (there's only 35g or so in that...low enough for my guts to handle).  why is soda supposed to be bad?  is it just the caffeine thing again?  because i've been slaying all the grapefruit jarritos too...
