I forgot about the cheese thing. I'm eating feta. I'm sure most of the regular stuff is pasteurized. I'l probably end up eating most cheese as long as it's pasteurized.
Poutine=delicious! I'm originally from Jersey, and my friends are all like, so it's like disco fries? and I'm like, NO IT'S LIKE A THOUSAND TIMES BETTER! And yes, I shout it.
ok, poutine looks like something i would have thought was delicious a couple months ago, but is totally turning my stomach just to look at right now. lol

I'm a nervous nelly and this is my first baby so I've been following most of the rules, if for no other reason than it keeps me from worrying. The only rules my doctor told me I HAD to follow though were no more sushi (which I ate ALL the time pre-pregnancy), no more alcohol, and less caffeine. The less caffeine thing has been easy though, I just switched from my two large dunkin's a day to a small one (or a medium on unusually grumpy mornings). The no sushi thing has been a breeze too, since it's actually seemed pretty gross to me lately.
I'm trying to abide by most rules because like @KJsbabe said, it's really just 9 months. I understand that there have been people getting pregnant since the beginning of time and all these rules weren't in place then. I think it's just because I'm finally pregnant for the first time at age 38 (on monday) and I don't really want to chance anything!
I do follow the guidelines. I limit my caffeine and try to completely avoid artificial sweeteners (which I do pregnant or not). I'm not eating lunch meat if it's not heated, avoiding processed meats, no alcohol, washing all my fruits and veggies, not eating raw fish or soft serve ice cream, etc. I don't feel deprived one bit.
It's only 9 months, it's not a big deal to me. I've had two losses and would do just about anything to bring this one home healthy and safe. For me, the risk is not worth the small benefit of eating/drinking whatever I want. Plus, I would probably not even enjoy it because I would be worried.
I don't care what other people do, they can make the choice that is right for them.

Ummm, I've never had poutine, but it sounds/looks soooo delicious right now! Mmm, salty. Why isn't it lunch time yet? And also why isn't poutine a thing anywhere but Canada? Definitely at least getting fries for lunch today. And maybe something else healthy, we'll see....
Also, I followed the rules to the letter first time around. This time, the only thing I'm making sure of is minimal caffeine, and no alcohol or smoking. But I don't smoke anyway. Although I might sneak a sip or some of DH's beer some time after 1st tri is over... He had a friend over last weekend and they were drinking delicious craft beers... why people, why??
I have a hot dog occasionally from my work (a Jewish hospital, so it's kosher and cooked to appropriate temp.) I eat the salad bar at work too. I don't love soft cheeses so I never ate those anyway. I have had zero interest in coffee or alcohol thus far. I'm not going to eat raw bar but I will still have sushi from my regular places, and I sent this article to my husband to get him off my back about it:
Basically everyone has to make whatever decisions you feel comfortable with. Medical professionals will always give you the safest recommendations which is abstinence from all potential sources of illness. It's just good to know that the "rules" here aren't the same as they are elsewhere... So you can realize that some of this advice is actually arbitrary and more theoretically than actually a risk. Breaking "our" pregnancy taboos isn't causing rampant bad outcomes in other places (who generally have better pregnancy outcomes than the US anyway!)
Hmmm.....I eat sushi (mostly cooked but some raw)
I have a small glass of wine every now and then.
I ate a hot dog on the street in NYC this past weekend. YUM!
I love Panera's "Bacon Turkey Bravo".
I don't do artificial sweeteners or bean sprouts.
I try not to lift much but as PP's have stated, having a non-walking toddler is my exception. @JennMikeMcc I've never heard of the gardening thing! Did your doc say why?
Oh- and a soft serve vanilla cone is calling my name!!
Man I want poutine so bad now, I had it a few times when I visited Canada in the late 90s and I can still remember how delicious it was. The closest thing I can get in San Diego is to order gravy fries with cheese at the Hawaiian bbq place. I follow most rules except I think fermented foods are also sometimes not recommended and I love sauerkraut, so keep eating that. I didn't know about soft serve so I guess I'm lucky I got my fill before I got my bfp, as we normally don't get it. We went on a cruise so I ate tons of smoked salmon, soft serve and drank Cokeand had wine, so I should be good for a while :-)
I must be a boozebag because I don't understand a "glass" of wine or a "glass" of beer. That wouldn't make me happy anyways - so I just skip the alcohol all together. I can definitely see sipping a bit of champagne for a toast or taking a sip of wine because it's a good vintage but I wouldn't bother otherwise.
No sushi for me - but there was no sushi beforehand anyways
My doctor's only concerns were tuna fish (1 sandwich per week only) and deli meats (apparently he saw one case of what listeria can do and he never wants to see that again) - oh and cut back on caffeine and give up smoking and booze.
I've cut back on caffeine - I was doing one iced coffee per day but I haven't really wanted it so I don't push it. I quit my beloved Diet Coke because of the chemicals but I'll still have a ginger ale or a sprite now and then.
I stopped smoking....tried to sneak one a few days after I found out about my pregnancy and it was disgusting so that was easy to never go back to.
Deli meats - I will most likely keep avoiding unless I really really want it.
Hot Dogs and Soft-serve are still fine in my book.
@mikeandjenn448 Because of stray cats same reason you shouldn't clean a litter box I knew the rule I just find weeding hard with gloves so I just washed really well afterwards. Well I guess we will see it's nice they can test for it!

I wish I could get over my paranoia to break the rules!! I've had hot dogs, but I didn't think that was an issue as long as they were steaming hot. I don't drink, smoke (though I never did so that wasn't really a stretch), eat lunch meat (I only really like salami...and don't like it heated...and boy do I miss it) or eat sushi (which is KILLING me!!). We made homemade sushi last friday with only cooked shrimp and other fish and all I kept thinking is where is my raw salmon, yellowtail and albacore?! I've already told the husband that his first food pick up after the baby is born is SUSHI.
I had never heard of the soft serve ice cream thing. I have definitely had a berry sundae or two from Costco and have had some fro yo since I've been preggo...and will be doing more of it over the next 6 months.
We've been to lots of grad parties, birthdays and weddings over the last few months and I have really wanted to just have a sip of some beer or wine, but I have refrained...darn paranoia!
I've had hot dogs, one tuna steak, canned tuna (only once a week), sushi from a reputable place, I've cleaned the litter box once (with gloves), I've had tons of ice cream (didn't know this was a thing), I have a soda once a day because it's the only thing I crave and it keeps my stomach calm, and I have a beer or standard 4-5oz glass of wine once a week (and will continue to do so through my entire pregnancy because I CAN stop at one and I love the taste)- I have avoided the high alcohol content IPA's that I love so much though and stick with something of less than 5% ABV. I do have a coffee aversion most days and that makes me VERY sad.
@peggels24 I'm with you on the "glass of wine/beer" thing. J never understood drinking one glass or wine, what do you do with the rest of the bottles? Also because I'm much more of a hard liquor kind of person, so I give it all up.
I never smoked anyways so that wasn't a problem.
I still eat lunch meat from my normal places. I also eat medium cooked steak probably twice a month.
I probably have a coke or two a day. Bit it helps with my headaches.
I also can't do the not lifting a certain weight. My son is 18 pounds and by the time I'm in 2nd/3rd tri he will be heavier.
@mikeandjenn448 Because of stray cats same reason you shouldn't clean a litter box I knew the rule I just find weeding hard with gloves so I just washed really well afterwards. Well I guess we will see it's nice they can test for it!

The irony wasn't lost on me! Ha
About the soft serve never heard that before but I will have kohrs brothers at the beach this summer!
This post makes me happy because I've been feeling guilty ignoring certain things. I've had a few hotdogs, cooked of course. And a sandwich with lunch meat on it. And one soda. Oh my!! haha. For me, I just feel guilty about not eating all that well, healthy stuff makes my stomach turn. I hope that changes soon!
And screw the soft serve rule. If I want fro you this summer, I will eat fro yo
I'm screwed about the lifting weights, my son is 30lbs and has beenfor over a year. My dh has a bad back and can't lift him or carry him for long so I get to do it, at least he's walking with us and not so clingy now but he loves to be held.
@orangehills I feel the same way about the healthy food right now. The thought of it makes me queasy. When j was pregnant with DS all I wanted was salad. This time all I want is donuts.

Fro yo for sure! It's a weekly tradition for us to go out with friends after Wednesday night church, and I'm not about to give that up!
I cut out all caffeine, no meats, no sushi , no alcohol ( never had it) I think it's better to be safe. Cutting food is so easy I would rather not take any risks! Everything can cross the placenta and the baby is so small and developing why put It any risk. I know some people might find this extreme but it's better to be safe than sorry!
You know... It's only 9 months! I can give up a couple things for 9 months for the health of my baby. It's really not the end of the world...
Risk vs. benefits. The benefits of me drinking coffee far outweigh the risks of me attacking people for not having caffeine. I'm absolutely nasty if I don't have any caffeine. I'd rather have caffeine and take the risk (which there is none if you stay below guidelines) than end up in jail due to my caffeine-withdrawing temper.
Exactly - Risk vs. Benefit.
There was a girl at my school is who is pg. She is a few months ahead of me and she was going off one day telling everyone all the things she couldn't eat for risks of being unhealthy. She said all of this as she stuffed her face with French fries and pasta salad.
I'll take some lean protein deli meat- something that is low in calories, keeps me strong and keeps me fuller longer (keeping away m/s) over carb loaded food anyday.
-------end quote-------
Deli meat is also loaded with sodium and preservatives. If you want some nice lean protein why not go for a skinless chicken breast?

@peggels24 I'm with you on the "glass of wine/beer" thing. J never understood drinking one glass or wine, what do you do with the rest of the bottles? --- snip ---
I recork the wine bottle or my FI drinks the rest. The breweries we go to will pour 6 or 9 oz. beers for us if we ask. Before I got pregnant, we buy growler's which would hold the beer for a week.
What the hell is a growler? Or is it a brand? Also DH doesn't drink wine. It would go bad.

I'll have to lift more too. My son is almost 30 lbs, and my dh just had shoulder surgery. However, I lift weight at the gym anyway, and I lifted pretty heavy before the pregnancy, so I'm sure it's fine.
I'll admit, I'm a rule follower. Heaven forbid I have a MC, they can test if Listeria was the cause. I don't want to live with that guilt.
I am 10 weeks. When my husband has a glass wine, I huff it. Yes, just the aroma alone is enough for me. Now in a few months, it may be a different story. But for now, I'm following all the rules.

I'm with you! I already know how much guilt comes with loss and id rather know if something happened again I literally did everything in my power to prevent it.
Not saying these things actually cause losses, just that my brain would jump to it. I have had zero caffeine since my BFP and it has sucked. Everything else has been easy especially with how sick I feel. Raw sushi and alcohol sound like death to me.
"As long as I live you will live. As long as I live you will be loved."
I used Alka Seltzer last night. We went out to eat at a Chinese Buffet (I know another no no) and I was in agony. It wasnt food poisoning but the worlds worst indigestion. No more chinese buffets for me and I have to get some mylanta\maalox in this house.
With my first pregnancy I was paranoid and followed mostly all of these rules. I had friends pregnant at the same time as me (mostly on their 2nd pregnancies) and I used to get annoyed because they would laugh at me and say, "Wait until you're pregnant with #2...everything is different!" I see what they mean now. By my 2nd tri with my first pregnancy, I caved and ate deli meat, enjoyed coffee and even a few glasses of wine spritzers here and there. Seeing how beautiful and smart my first little girl turned out, makes all that anxiety go away and makes me realize- as long as you aren't going overboard and keeping yourself healthy, the stress of "The rules" is worse than indulging once in a while.
