DS was BF for 4 months and then went to formula. He was having some tummy trouble with the formula so we ended up giving him Alimentum and Soy (a combo) at dr recommendation. At his one year check up dr said to start introducing whole milk. So in the last few weeks, DS has had whole milk in sippy with his meals and one or two whole milk bottles a day. Yesterday he started this terrible diaper rash. By bedtime last night he had welts on his bottom. It was terrible. This morning it looked better than last night but not great. When I dropped him off at daycare this morning one of the staff mentioned she thought it looked like diaper rash that a child gets when they are lactose intolerant. When I got to work and googled lactose intolerance symptoms, none were anything I've been concerned about. The symptoms listed were bloating (no), cramps in tummy (have no idea), gurgling belly (no), gas (none more than usual), loose stools, (yes) and trhowing up (no). I figured the diarrhea the last few days was more to do with teeth than anything else.
Anyway, do you have any experience with lactose intolerance in babies? I'm waiting on a call back from dr office. Maybe we should slow down the amount of milk he is getting and increase his formula bottles a little longer.
Re: is this lactose intolerance?
I am lactose intolerant and from what I would say about a LI baby is that you'd probably notice more fussiness because it is painful. THe stomach cramps you get are horrendous. If I have dairy (without knowing it, b/c I take lactaid meds) my cramps and diarrhea are around for about an hour and they start up within 5-10 min. of having it.
That said, everyone has different levels of intolerance. I'd ask your dr. about switching to lacatid milk or soy/rice milk.
