Microchips

Assume microchips are implanted- in people- for a variety of helpful reasons, including providing medical history to emergency workers, finding you if you are lost/kidnapped, or tracking fugitives from justice.

  • I would support voluntary. I would be more hesitant on mandatory. Only because I think there will be an ensuing shit storm. Of the likes that have never been experienced before. I don't think I could handle all that drama on my FB Feed.

I actually met someone who chipped their child years ago. We went snow skiing about 10 years back. Our instructor had his 7 year old son chipped to track him if he was kidnapped or got lost skiing. The kid was awesome at skiing and went off on his own all day. But I'm undecided...
  • Now that I've posted this, though...can you even find people remotely from microchips? I think for dogs they have to scan the animal to find them. IDK if they can actually make microchips that you can locate remotely, like a cell phone or a lo-jack or whatever. But let's assume you can, because that makes the discussion more interesting.

Also, Where would said chip be placed? Because if it is on an arm or leg I would be afraid of someone kidnapping my kid and chopping their arm off.

Totally had the exact same thought. If you're morbid, so am I.

  • If the gps locating chips did exist, I would be for having them voluntarily for those who wanted them and criminals having no choice. Also, Where would said chip be placed? Because if it is on an arm or leg I would be afraid of someone kidnapping my kid and chopping their arm off. #amimorbidforthinkingthatway
i always imagine the back of the neck.

I was sort of thinking they'd have to put it in a semi-random place on each person, otherwise they might be too easy to remove.

I looked it up. GPS microchips do not exist at this time because there is no way to keep them powered.

I think that a voluntary program is great. Mandatory chipping is a bit too big brother for my taste. I'm not sure how I feel about involuntary chipping for criminals. Are we talking everyone who has been convicted of a crime anytime, ever? Only felons? Only violent crime? Can they elect to have it removed once their sentence has been satisfied?

If your kid is kidnapped by someone who has no qualms about lopping their arm off, the fact they have a chip in their arm is certainly not going to make them any LESS safe...
  • I still stand on other options, though I did say I'd support voluntary.  As far as the criminals go - I don't agree that every criminal should be forced to get chipped.  It should at least be on a case by case basis.

Dammit, why you gotta be a #dreamassassin @lee81?

W/R/T the rest, I would probably say only violent felons, and they stay forever. I dunno. I am mad that the whole thing is a cow's opinion now that I know there's no GPS chips. But also, it seems like the crazies are getting kind of worked up about the chip idea then, if you can't really be tracked using chips.

    Not technologically possible now...
  • This crosses over into the conspiracy theory topic as well. But I don't doubt that GPS microchips exist. Think about technologies that are developed by the military and defense agencies that surely we know nothing about.

In fact, I think those gitmo detainees we just released are probably gps microchipped.

They have GPS LoJack of sorts, but it isn't an implant. People with medical conditions (and/or kids) can wear them. It's more like a medical bracelet than a microchip.

I knew a lady that had one for her husband. Worked a little like Find My iPhone, but more like Find My Husband. If he was late getting home from his run, she could find him and have an ambulance sent.
  • No tracking chips. There's too much power in knowing where 100% of people are 100% of the time, and I trust no entity to utilize that information only for the common good.

As for the technology, pet microchips can be so small and last so long because they only power on and transmit info when excited by a scanner. Something like a GPS chip that must constantly transmit would either be (1) too big to be a microchip or (2) not last long enough to be worthwhile. However, just because the technology doesn't exist right now doesn't mean it won't before long.

  •   Guise, kids are not dogs. No microchipping.

In all seriousness, I'm surprised no one mentioned chips for the disabled. One recent case that comes to mind was the autistic boy who ran from school in NYC. He was not able to communicate verbally. In cases like this I guess microchipping could come in handy but it still seems inhumane. Maybe it's just too futuristic. I don't know.

I am a little bit LOL at the idea that anyone really gives a shit where I go, or where most of us go. Spoiler: I go to work, I come home. I go to Target. I go to my mom's house. Lather. Rinse. Repeat. The idea that some Big Brother type is going to pay any attention to a regular, law-abiding citizen just doesn't make any sense. To what end?
That is the smallest picture, though.  The bigger picture is the power and control behind microchipping a whole society.  You ask "to what end?" I ask "where does it go from there?"

Well, give me some examples then! I said I was probably naive about it. Spin out some of your worst case scenarios for me.

  • Ok, this should be fun. In the distant future...

You'll basically be a walking bar code.  Your bar code will be scanned automatically and all evidence of your life recorded.  You'll always be "on the grid."  Big Brother will be watching, you'll be stripped of your humanity and eventually rats will come close to eating your face.

That or we all become one giant super computer and simultaneously commit suicide because we know it's the right thing to do.

But like...why? Would that happen? Doesn't Big Brother need good little consumers to make capitalism work? Also, the gub'mint can't even make healthcare.gov happen, do we really think they are capable of this kind of business? And again, record away, weirdos, I don't care if you create a logarithm of my bathroom habits and whatnot.

  • What is to prevent pervs from hacking into the system and finding the exact GPS location of your kid and use it to their pervy advantage? Nope octopus to microchipping for me! In addition, I find it an unacceptable invasion of privacy. I dont even like my phone tracking my wherabouts. As an alternative to microchipping, I do think there should be one universal electronic medical record that medical professionals can access (with pt permission). its terribly inconvenient that I have to wait days to get patient records faxed from the hospital across town.

We have this in Canada. It's called netcare and with your name, date of birth, and your provincial health care number any medical professional or doctor's office employee can get the results of every medical test you've ever had in the country. Blood tests and all. With a secure fob that has a code that changes every 30?seconds. Super handy when I worked in a doctor's office.

You're assuming we live in a capitalist society when this goes down.
