I wondered if I was having twins as my husband is a twin so I asked if one could be hiding or could show up later and they said they would be able to detect twins right away so if the first ultrasound says 1 it's just 1. They said it's more likely to see more later on if you have a lot in there and they think they see 4 versus 5 kind of thing!
A hiding twin has happened before, where only one was seen but then there were two at the next ultrasound. It's very unlikely though, especially with early ultrasounds and high tech equipment these days.

Um, do you know how twins are made? Because your husband doesn't have jack to do with it.
If they only saw one then I would say its pretty likely theres only one...at my ultrasound the tech thought she may have seen another baby hiding behind the baby, she said in 32 years that had never happened to her...and i'm pretty convinced it was the cord...so the chance that they didn't see the other one at yours seems very unlikely!

ha yes... and i know if twins run in the family theres a better chance of having them if theres history through the womans side but i was still curious at the possibility. I didn't think I was having twins- but i thought to ask the question because there are so many twins in the family.
i dunno, i'd always go with a "gut feeling" over an ultrasound.

I think it might have gone better if you had asked your question in a different way. Instead of asking Internet strangers if you are having twins, despite your ultrasound clearly showing only one LO, you could have asked what the likelihood is of an early ultrasound being inaccurate.
I'm sorry the responses weren't what you hoped for
Jerks. Really wish I could just delete this. I've heard of twins not being seen right away. Sorry I asked such a "stupid question" in your opinion. Yes I know how twins are made. I didn't ask how. Just if there a chance one could have been hiding. I didn't ask for rude answers. Don't like the question don't answer is. A few of you were nice. The rest of you maybe forgot how to be polite. Not all of us are baby expects!
Why on earth would you ask a bunch of internet strangers to make a random guess about something when a trained professional told you otherwise and then get mad when they point out the obvious?
It's moments like this where I realize how little most people know about reproduction...
Okay, identical twins are spontaneous. One egg, one sperm - somehow divide into two babies. This type of twins doesn't run in anyone's family. Even if you have identical twins in your family, you have the same chance as literally anyone else. This chance is less than 1% of the population world wide, and constant across different race, wealth levels, ages.
Non-identical, aka fraternal twins, happens when the mother releases two eggs at the same time which are fertilized by two sperm and both implant in the uterus. The standard population sees this spontaneously about 4-5% of the time. This 95% of spontaneously conceived pregnancies will be just one baby.
This CAN be a family trait, but only through the mother's family because it would require a history of releasing multiple eggs - what does it matter if your DH's mother, grandmother, and sister all had fraternal twins? None of their genes impact whether you release one egg or two. So twins don't run in a Dad's family in a way that is relevant for his own reproduction. Ever.
People at an increased risk for twins are older mothers, as their reproductive systems tend to release multiple eggs towards the end of their fertility (peri-menopause). They have as high as 10-15% chance.
Also fertility patients, as they have taken hormones to stimulate their ovaries into producing and releasing multiple eggs per cycle. In a monitored cycle with a qualified doctor, a woman still has a chance as high as 24-30% for twins if she conceives that cycle.
And, like I said, women whose family history shows spontaneous fraternal twins may have an elevated chance, but not higher than 10%.
So now you know a bit more. Oh, and after an ultrasound confirming one baby, the likelihood in a spontaneous pregnancy like yours in having a hidden twin is less than 0.1%.
So no. You are not having twins.
Ok, I know all of this is true, but since we have a crazy twin thread...
I wonder how statistically improbable friends I had growing up were then. I went to school with a set of cousins that were twins. Each twin set's dad was a twin. So 2 dads were twins who had twins. I always thought it was crazy improbable, but after reading these statistics, my mind is blown.
Why so many mean answers? If you think it's a stupid question, help the person understand. If you think she's kidding, ignore it or laugh. Yikes...
Welcome to The Bump. If you ask really stupid questions, we give you really snarky answers.
Please only speak for yourself. There are a lot of respectful women on this forum.
Oh yeah, I forgot, I'm the mean internet bitch and you all are SOOOO nice and happy all the time. Y'all can be rainbows and puppy dogs all you want but as a general rule, The Bump is snarky. Get over it.

My BFF had twins via a surro. They transferred 2 embryos and at 8 weeks, they only saw one. At the anatomy scan, there were 2. It's totally possible. It doesn't happen often but it happens.
Wth is wrong with people. Obviously some were never taught manners. While very unlikely, there is a possibility of not seeing the twin in an early us.
I was on the wte site for my first two deliveries, but was told I should try this one because people were more mature and helpful. What's the point of a support site if you plan on just being "snarky"?
Are you ladies kidding me? For a bunch of expectant moms there sure are a lot of total bitches making rude comments. Is that how you're going to handle questions from your kids too?! Grow up! We aren't in middle school anymore and I really hate cowards who feel like they can say whatever they want and be mean for the fun of it ON THE INTERNET. Go find something better to do with your time....like....I don't know....learning how to be a kind, loving mother and not a total bitch.
And by the way....it wasn't a dumb question. I have read of several cases where ultrasound techs miss a second baby because they didn't check thoroughly. Is it likely? No. But it's not unheard of.

The bump is known for it's bluntness, snarkiness, and intolerance for puppies and rainbows. There's sites that will coddle and tell you what you want to hear, but this isn't one of them.
I don't think she was asking the question be given a sugar coated answer, but to say it was a stupid question, the name calling, and bullying is uncalled for! I don't expect to be coddled, but I do expect support and encouragement from this site. Being blunt and being a bitch are completely different

Um I'm pretty sure you're the one who violated TOS in your post, not anyone else.
Also, I expect children to ask silly questions. This is a grown woman thinking she should trust "her gut" over an ultrasound. Apples to oranges.

and here we go with the bullying card...
Yes, because bullying is when one or more people attack one person repeatedly. If it was one or two ugly comments, that could be ignored, but the large number of people who are trying to cut down and humiliate one single person for a asking a question they honestly wanted to know the answer to is bullying.
I get why everyone is freaking out, but I mean, as the title now says... wow. OP, if it makes you feel better, my doc isn't sure if there is one or two in there, so I guess you never know- or maybe I should switch doctors... :P I assume if you aren't having an u/s in the super near future that they will be able to hear two heartbeats via doppler soon if your gut feeling is right. Good luck.
ok, this is a pet peeve of mine and i've said it on other threads before. people being snarky and yes, maybe even a little mean on a message board is NOT bullying, and calling it such does a major disservice to people who are victims of real bullying.
