With DS I was already in labor and was getting triage in L&D. They made me walk for an hour to see how I was contracting and dilating. Sometime during my walk my water broke. I wasn't wearing a huge pad or anything and I didn't feel it or hear it-- guess I was too focused on contraction pain. I went back in to my temp room and my midwife took one look and said "well your water definitely broke, looks like you're staying!" ...

My water made an obnoxious popping noise when it broke. I knew it was my water because the pressure I felt was immediately gone and it was a huge gush of fluid like something out of a movie. This was my last pregnancy which resulted in a loss, and idk if the huge gush and pop was out of the norm because typically baby is bigger and head down...my baby was only 1lb 4oz and breech at the time so that could have played a role. I am terrified of my water breaking this time around.

Mine never broke on its own.  At some point (can't remember if I'd gotten the epi or not), my OB used the amnihook (that's the tool that looks a bit like a crochet hook that some of you have mentioned) to rupture the membranes.
I think it's fairly common for only the forebag, or chorion, to break; that's what happened to my SIL, who's a nurse, and I think they must've ruptured her amnion at the hospital, although I can't remember.  I hope mine ruptures on its own this time, although only if I'm already in or about to start labor!  I have no desire to go through an induction.

ETA:  Oh--when the OB broke my water, it came out in a big gush.

  • I rolled over in bed at 4am and felt a pop and a trickle. I wasn't sure if i had peed so i got up to go to the bathroom and still wasn't sure. After phone googling on the toilet "what does amniotic fluid smell like" i decided it had happened, and was thankful we had just put on the mattress pad!

I told dh and said we should try to get a little rest while we could, and he actually went back to sleep! I was way too excited and nervous. I had a reg day at work the day before, never any bh, and it was still a few hours before things got so horribly painful that dh had to get me in the car. Ds arrived 30 min after we got to the hospital.

I hope my water breaks on its own again this time so i know for sure that it's really go time!
Alex has arrived! 9 pounds, 21 inches - 3 weeks early on March 2nd ~went natural - very intense. whew!~
  • With DD1, my water broke at 3 am while I was sleeping. I woke up thinking I was peeing myself, but when I realized I was GUSHING liquid, even while laying down, I knew it was my water. After I went to the bathroom and stood up for a while, it slowed to more of a trickle. I guess baby's head had lower to block it from gushing again. When I was check at the hospital again (laying down) it gushed again whenever I really moved around. With DD2, I had my membranes stripped the day before my due date. I was already 5 cm dilated at my OB appointment. Went to the hospital the next morning when contractions were close and strong. Once I got to 7 or 8 cm my progress slowed. Dr on call (not my OB) wanted to start pitocin to speed things up. I refused, but asked about having waters ruptured, which they agreed to. After that, DD2 arrived within about 30-45 minutes.

  • Mine never broke on its own. I was 4cm when I got to the hospital and having wicked contractions. This was around 4:30pm. I tried to be a tough girl and hold off on getting the epidural, but, finally my voice of reason (aka DH) convinced me around 7:30pm that it was time for the epidural. Once I settled down and the meds kicked in, someone broke my water. I vaguely remember it feeling warm but everything is fuzzy. Every time I feel the urge to pee now, which is like every 10 minutes, I am convinced my water is going to break.

  • I woke up at midnight to a tiny gush of water...I thought maybe I had peed a little, but that had never happened before. Got up to go to the bathroom and nothing else came out. Went back to bed. I was awoken an hour later - same deal. This time I went to the bathroom and lost my mucus plug and noticed some blood. I was pretty sure at that point that my water was breaking, albeit slowly. Went back to bed and contractions started....painful enough that I couldn't go back to sleep but nothing horrible. At around 6am I got up to shower before heading to the hospital and got a bigger gush of water. The really big gush didn't come until I was at the hospital, however, which was nice, because once it started it seemed to never stop.
  • While I was on hospital bed rest for preterm labor my water broke.my experience was kinda different. I want even sure at first my water broke. I got up to go to the bathroom and noticed my underwear was a little damp... But I thought I could have been sweating or having discharge. Went back to bed. When I got up again they were still just slightly damp but I thought I better tell the nurse. So she did a swab and sent it to the lab and it came back I was ruptured. It seemed to just be a little leak.... It wasn't obvious. That was Saturday, but Tuesday night I was laying in bed and felt what everyone describes as a pop and thought, could that have been my water?! 30 seconds later it was gushing out, line to the point I soaked my pants and the bed. It was like I had sat my butt in a pool, it was hard to miss, 8 hours later my son was born.

My first two were broken in the hospital with what looked like an oversized crochet hook and my third broke one of the times the doc was checking me while in labor at the hospital so I don't really know how it would feel being in a more home setting.
This, both at the hospital while the doc checked me. I'm kinda hoping for my water to break on my own this time.

Ok so along the lines of all this....I was just in the shower and something leaked out.  I had just peed before I got in the shower, but, at the rate I've been going, it definitely could have been more pee!  Or...my water broke.  I have no clue how to tell the difference because I obviously couldn't smell or see the color of it.  Not sure what to do at this point.  Wait it out a bit and see if it happens again?  See if I start having contractions?  Has this happened to anyone else?  My water never broke with my son so I have nothing to compare it to!

    ETA: details.

  • Call your medical team, tell them what you know an ask what they suggest?
Apparently there's some kind of liquid test to see if it's amniotic fluid or not.
  • @Kohler2009‌ they'd probably tell you to lay down for about 30 minutes to an hour. Then stand up. If there's a gush of fluid, chances are it's your water. If not, it was probably just pee. Of course, call your doc anytime you have a doubt. That's what they're there for :)

  • @AMcLaws‌ thanks!!! I have been laying around all afternoon (it's been about 4 hours now) and drinking water. Nothing else has leaked out. I am having some cramping and what I think are BH contractions. But I have been having them for over a month now. I have a MFM appt tomorrow so hopefully I can hang in there till then!!

  • Did anyone feel anything before your water broke. Mine has always been broken in the hospital once I was already in labor. But for whatever reason I am paranoid it will happen early this time. Sometimes I feel like my LO is going to do it herself. Especially when she punches me in the cervix:) did you have any idea it might happen before it did?
  • I woke up to a slight gush of fluid at 4am and thought I had peed myself but when I went to the bathroom had a bloody show. I put on a pad and went back to bed and just had a very slight trickle throughout the morning. I finally went in to the dr at 10am and the litmus test was nnegative but the ferning (sp?) test was positive. I still had a forebag of waters that my dr broke, it didn't hurt.
