  • Wow. I never would have guessed that there would be so many strong opinions on this! I don't think anyone I know would look down on it... but then again, California is a bit more "casual." (Either that, or I am just completely etiquette-ignorant). I would care less about what other people think and more about how excited you are to be pregnant...
  • Wow...I never knew there were "customs", tacky or otherwise, for who throws baby showers!

I'm from Canada, and I've never heard of it being frowned upon. My Mom and I are very close, and she'll be throwing a baby shower for me

  • What up, zombie thread!

I'm from the Midwest and I've never even heard of this being an issue. Mothers throw all kinds of showers for their daughters here, all the time! "Proper" customs are so weird.
  • I'm from the South and I've never heard of this before. I'm sure I've been to showers thrown by mothers and haven't even noticed, honestly.

I don't think it's a regional thing at all. Also - Texas really isn't the South.

  • I don't think its tacky at all.   I don't have anyone who is throwing me a baby shower, so I think its wonderful your mom is stepping up and doing it.
  • Omg zombie thread! image

Yes, but I'm loving the LCB throwback, man.  She's always got to let everyone know how "rich" she is.  Reminds me of the old days when I was pregnant with DS.  Ahhh...memories.

How is Texas not the south? :-??

  • I'm from the Deep South and Texas is always considered Western not Southern - at least where I'm from anyway. Kind of like Florida isn't the South. ;) I guess it's all a matter of opinion anyway.

  • I think its the norm now for mothers to throw baby showers. Its 2014, nothing is really "tacky" anymore. (unless its extremely bizzare like telling people that they HAVE to give you something to attend etc.)

  • I don't think its tacky at all. In my opinion, it would be a special moment for a mother and daughter to share. Especially if the father is a husband or boyfriend. Most mothers feel left out when the daughter is in a relationship b/c the parents always want to do things together. Allowing her to throw you a shower would just be a special bond between you and her.
  • Given the fact that there's a new trend for women to throw their own shower (yeah, I don't claim to understand it), I don't believe that a relative as close as a mother or mother in law throwing a shower is tacky at all.

  • I am very confused as to why it would be an issue for your mother to throw it…..My mother threw both of mine…<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

This comes up all the time.

I think it is a regional thing.

Where I am from and my social circle (the South and upper middle to upper class), it would be looked down upon but in lots of places it is perfectly acceptable.

Exactly.  I'm from Texas and yes it is considered I don't think tacky is the word but just like pitiful.  Like the mom doesn't have any friends that can throw this poor girl a shower?  So it's really your circle.  I'm from Dallas and my mother would be mortified if no one offered (as in her friends or an aunt, etc) to throw her daughter a shower.

I live in Dallas too and I've been to several where the grandma-to-be hosted the baby shower. Never thought anything of it.

  • I don't think it's tacky at all. My mom helped throw the one I had in my home town, because she still lives there. After college most of my friends didn't return to our small town so them throwing something from out of state is tough logistically. I would trust my mom over my friends any day to do a great job!

  • You shouldn't care what other people think. I think it is a wonderful gesture and there are many girls out there who do not have a supportive mother, so you should really just be thankful that she wants to do such a nice thing for you.
