I was wondering if you guys would be willing to share the last few skills that your LO has learned - kicking a ball, counting to 5, sorting shapes, etc.
I know that we shouldn't compare our kids too too much, but after reading through the "
what are you teaching LO / favorite activities" thread, I'm a little concerned that my DS is behind. Counting? Well, he's not really talking, so that's not happening for a while. Emptying the dishwasher? Setting the table? My LO isn't even walking yet, so that's not happening. (In case you're curious, I've been working with EI with my LO for speech.)
I'd love to get a sense of where DS is in relation to his peers. I know that every kid develops faster in some areas and slower in others, so I'm trying to figure out what areas he needs the most work in to catch up to his peers and what kinds of tasks may be age-approapriate to try for.
Thanks guys!
To get us started, my DS's most recent new skills are:
1. Standing unassisted
2. Putting the rings on his ring stacker
3. (Sometimes) saying "na-na-na" when he sees a banana. Yay for first words!
Re: Newest skills learned?
just as pp said, they're all so different, and most of them will catch up with each other eventually. OP, it sounds like your little one is getting good help with speech and is otherwise just developing at his own pace that's just right for him.
in terms of my guy, he is precocious with language and quite physically confident, but sitting still to do anything detail oriented (drawing, pasting) is out of the question. he'd rather eat the crayons than draw with them!
it's so interesting to hear what other kids are doing at this age!
here's what our little one is doing now:
Recently he's made the following developments:
-obsessed with doors and light switches, flap books, anything he can open and close (we're working on words for open and close, but so far, he's not catching on to that
-trying to climb the couch, trying to climb stairs standing upright, and carrying around large objects (his ball popper and the swiffer are his favorites)
- newest words: he says "uh oh" when he drops something, he signs "more" and "all done"
-working on identifying animals - he knows lion, tiger, dog, cat, elephant, turtle, and monkey most of the time. As for animal sounds...all animals say "BAH!!!"
-he finally started waving, but it's more like the "all done" sign. He rarely says "hi" and won't say "bye bye" Instead, he says "all gone" and signs "all done" when we leave a place, or when daddy leaves. It's actually pretty funny.

My LO is obsessed with spinning fans (demands that a fan be "on" or will tell us when one is on), LOVES turning knobs, making things spin, tries to climb but isn't necessarily tall enough for the heights she tries to tackle.
Her latest is saying "Patty Cake" & hitting her knees in pttern that is pretty close to the needed rhythm. Daycare & us at home have worked with her on that for over 2 months off and on. Her doing it on her own though just showes up about a week ago.
seems as with most things, once we ask about something, or someone else on here talks about a milestone, it is hit within a few weeks. With that warning, my LO is getting molars & the 2nd one broke through. Those buggers are evil!
- Helping put away the dishes. She'll bring plates to me that go in the top cupboards, and will put the cutting boards in the lower cupboard herself.
- Throwing wrappers, etc. away when she's done with them. Her favorite snack is apple sauce pouches, and she'll throw them away now.
- Walk from the car to her classroom herself in the morning. She's getting harder to carry as she gets older and my bump gets bigger, so this was big for me. She can go the reverse direction too, but she hasn't mastered which car is ours yet.
But, I am attempting colors and numbers because there are a couple books she loves right now that give me the opportunity.
Your post made me sad as if you felt your child was behind especially since he doesn't talk or walk YET. Intelligence isn't based on talking-I hear a ton of stuff come out of stupid people's mouth. And you can learn a lot without talking or moving. My older 2 kids literally said less then 5 words at this age & suddenly one month had a word explosion. It was clear they were just observing and letting it soak in.
I always try to "teach" my kids when they aren't realizing. We count stairs when going up. You could do this with your LO and have him crawl up. I started this when my kids were crawling at 6 months. Clearly they couldn't talk but when they could they knew it. Same goes for animal identification and sounds. We're huge book people since we don't do TV & they learned a lot that way (they love the library!!). Let him drink from solo cups and ask do you want the red or yellow. Right now he'll point but he will still be learning colors.
Just don't forget the power of free play!! Skills like sharing, manners, picking up, etc. are important to do & easy at this age & younger.
I do focus on teaching her things though, but as part of play and daily activities. I just have it in the back of my mind that we will work on colors so when we play with her toys I point out colors or sort by color or focus on colors in book. Mega blocks are good for that. I also talk about the color of her shirt or her cup. I was also focused on counting and would use any opportunity to factor that in to what we are doing.
I think I'm going to start on identifying letters. I think I might try to start working in a letter per week.
