EP'ers: white scabs on nipples??

I've developed these white, scabby-looking things on the tips of my nipples. They are also incredibly sore - like taking a shower is torture and trying to apply lanolin is awful. I'm using the Medela Symphony every 2-4 hours for 15-30 minutes at a time... just wondering what this could be?? I thought maybe thrush, but not sure if I have any of the symptoms.... ideas??

  • I'm thinking thrush too...  boo!!!

  • Possibly isn't thrush.

i would watch for the symptoms.

however i get this often. i just gently wet the area with water and rub with a soft cloth. I swear my nipples are like steel anymore so it never bothers me. lol. However- my nipples never had pain with them (other than the in the beginning usual my nipples are killing me pain)

i think it is most likely from not letting your nipples air dry a little before putting them away. (guilty)-

  • Oh I have that too, and for me, it isn't thrush.  I think it's just dryness.  However, if you're worried, def put in a call to your OB because if it is, in fact, thrush, you want to get that taken care of, all it takes is some triple nipple cream.  And, keep in mind, pumping is pretty strenuous on nipples that aren't used to that kind of suction, heeehee!!  So that could be why you are sore.
  • It could be milk blisters or thrush.

It could also be that your cups are too small.  I had this problem, and they were blisters from rubbing on the sides if I didn't get them centered exactly.  I got the bigger cups and the problem went away.  This happened right around 3-4 weeks.  Good luck!
