Re: Random thread- for all things random.

  • Um. I asked a friend who had a baby two years ago if she took breastfeeding classes. She said no, described her experience to me, yadda yadda yadda. She told me to be patient and kind with myself, that breastfeeding isn't as scary as it seems.

And then she said "are you doing any nipple toughening exercises?"

    Um.

    Da fuq?

    I'm scared to Google.
At my shower last weekend, a friend told me that her mom told her to use a scrubby brush to toughen up her nipples beforehand.  NO WAY.

  • I'm reading a book called The Shit No One Tells You About (A guide to surviving your first year)...

Excerpt: "Several weeks after delivery, I delivered a clot the size of a baby's head."

Ummmm what?! Is this normal? Does passing it hurt like a delivery? How often do these clots come out?!

They're not really that bad, just strange. I only had one really big one maybe a week or two after, and i didn't feel it. I saw it in myunderwear after peeing and was like whoa! But it's not that big of a deal. Like mega period action.

Alex has arrived! 9 pounds, 21 inches - 3 weeks early on March 2nd ~went natural - very intense. whew!~
  • Went to L&D today, because baby hasn't made a single move since last night.

We get there, and I get hooked up to the monitors, and he starts going bonkers.
    =/
I'm really glad, because I was paranoid all day, but seriously. Silly baby. Hope it wasn't too expensive a trip :P
Same thing happened to me on Wednesday last week. I was debating all afternoon about calling my OB but after 2 failed kick counts a few hours apart I called, then went to L&D to get checked. The nurse joked that he would start moving around once she got me hooked up...sure enough! Little stinker was probably pissed that I was sitting there instead of at home eating dinner! Glad both our boys are doing well!

I was just coming here to say the same thing! I feel like I've injured it somehow, or have been riding a horse for 12 days. Never expected an achy vag.

  • So, I have a question for my random thread buddies- and it's NOT that I'm asking what to pack in my hospital bag, I know we've been over that ad nauseum.  I'm confused though- I received a letter from my hospital today about my upcoming delivery, and it included telling me that I need to be sure to bring all the diapers the baby will need.  Um, what?  I'm a FTM, I have no idea how many that is, or what size the baby will be, or what type will work, and doesn't every single thread here tell people to just hoard what the hospital has and take some home?!?!  The thousands of dollars I pay my insurance has to cover SOMETHING, right?!?!  I mean, it sort of feels like they're about to tell me to crochet my own mesh panties!  Anybody else had this happen or dealt with it?

Yeah that's really weird. I've always been told that the hospital will have diapers for the baby while they are staying there. How long will you be staying after baby is born? I've been told for newborns count on 12 changes a day.

The thing is, even with that count, should I have a box of preemie, newborn, AND size 1s in my trunk and just drive around with that?  I can't see wanting to load diapers when I'm in labor, and we're all over the place with size estimates.  I know the ultrasounds can be off, but I'm already measuring 41 weeks at 34 and the baby measured 34 at 30.  Also, no baby among my SO and his 6 siblings was under 9.5 lbs.  It's a two day stay for vaginal, 4 days for a C, and they're pushing me towards a C because of the size.  I'm just REALLY irritated this is even an issue, and yet one more reason why I loathe my OB and can't wait to never deal with them again.

@sxymamakat‌ that might mean your hospital doesn't supply the diapers. That blows. You should verify that's the case. I would pack at least 40 diapers. I know that seems like a lot but, newborns get changed approx 12 times per day, and if you were to need a csection you could be there for 3 days. Plus, you always need extras. You should probably call the hospital about the other items they do and don't supply. Like wipes, Vaseline (for circs), mesh panties, pads, peri bottles...ugh I'm sorry you even have to worry about this.
It actually suggests all the toiletries, but my skin is so sensitive, I was going to do that anyways.  They do suggest Vaseline and pads.  It just seems really, really offensive and inconvenient.

BTW: We're planning on CDing past the newborn size, but with our move and everything else, I won't have time to get the cloth straightened out before the birth.

That is so inconvenient! We CD too, but in the earliest newborn phase it's easier to to disposables, especially if you are in the hospital, because that would mean you wouldn't have access to laundry. I'd suggest since you are really sensitive to purchase sensitive diapers and wipes for LO. For DS's circ we needed Vaseline and sterile gauze (cut into little squares) you cover the gauze in Vaseline and then drape it over the tip of the penis. You could use aquaphor instead. Both of those also are great to use as diaper cream (in disposables) to help prevent the meconium from sticking to skin. For you, make sure to get peri bottles, the giant pads, some pain spray, and those mesh panties.
Thanks, Ducks, I'm honestly super miffed.  We actually registered for sensitive wipes and I was going to only pick up the sensitive diapers at first too.  If they want me to bring Vaseline, whatever- I'm waiting for them to tell me to bring the gauze too!  Would CVS have the peri bottles?  I know I heard some ladies say to swipe a spare from the hospital since  they're hard to track down.  And maybe I SHOULD crochet my own mesh panties.  I could add butterflies or something festive.

Well now that someone brought it up, what is PSA (my guess, public service announcement) and NBR?

ETA: I still have newbie in me.
  • Lol they're both pretty close. Thank you guys!

@milestrellas‌, Haven't seen much of you lately. Miss your snarky comments lol How's little Alexander doing?
  • Working on his motor skills :)

Awwwww look at him!!! Such a little cutie pie. Glad to hear he's getting bigger and I hope the feeding goes well tomorrow :) thanks for sharing!
  • I think NBR cold be "not board related" too...

Also, @sxymamakat, that is super bullshit that you have to provide all that stuff. How hard would it be for DH or someone else to pick up diapers once baby has arrived? I'd probably buy one small pack of newborn and one size one and that way you'd be covered until someone could get to the store. If LO never needs newborn, those could be returned. FWIW, we liked pampers swaddlers the best in the beginning :)

I think someone could probably run out, although we're already trying to figure out the fact that he's getting flack about even leaving work if I go into labor.  It's been delightful.  I think you're right about one small pack of each and just go with it.  I planned on getting the Swaddlers, just keeping an eye out for a sale.

  • @sxymamakat, it's not exactly a sale, but target gives a $10 gift card for every 2 boxes (of a certain size) of swaddlers you buy. If you're using them anyway, it's a decent deal.

  • I REALLY wanted to get a dresser for LO this weekend so I could start getting out baby stuff from the attic and just generally getting the nursery together. Guess what hasn't happened yet and doesn't look like it's happening today either? On the plus side, we did go look at swingsets/playsets for DS so I think we'll have that set up in the backyard before LO comes (assuming no early delivery).

I REALLY wanted to go to Homegoods today to get some more accessories for LOs room (i need a lamp and ottoman and rug), but i am so tired and lazy right now from all the ish we did around the house this morning that I think it is going to have to wait another week...

Isn't Home Goods the best!? I always run in there when I take my boys to get their hair cut because it's right next door. We don't really NEED anything else for the nursery right now, but the boys will need their hair cut this week and I know I'll buy something at HG. :)

I officially used a diaper for the first time yesterday!

ETA; "Used" as in "diapered something," not "used" as in "tested one out."   That would be gross. And the only reason the duck got it was because our dog is too big for size 1 diapers.
I diapered a teddy bear earlier this week! I'm glad I'm not the only one putting baby things on inanimate objects

Where are you looking to get a dresser?

We've looked at a bunch of places (baby store and furniture) but just haven't been able to pull the trigger. Right after my post, though, I said screw it, talked to DH and left him home with DS during his nap while I went to babies r us and picked one out. It should be here by the end of the week!
  • DH's cousin is getting married 4 hours away the Saturday before my (Monday) RCS. We're obviously not going. Anyway, so DH was figuring out the timeline for the day of my c/s. He like "ok surgery at xx, baby out by xx, recover for like an hour, then I'll go get DS around 11:00." I'm like "let's just wait till after his nap around 3:00." DH: "well I want him to see his baby brother first." Me: "????" DH: "well the people coming through [our town] on the way home from the wedding will be stopping." Me: "WHAT."

Then I totally panic and start crying cuz I'm going to be recovering from surgery, our baby will be 6 hours old, idk how it'll be going with BFing, etc. I don't want a bunch of random extended family members there that wouldn't normally come, but decide they can stop in since they happen to be driving through town. Just no. Then DH gets all PO'ed and is like "if it was your family you wouldn't care!" Uh yes I would. Not THE DAY my baby is getting cut out of me. So I'm like "just put yourself in my shoes, you were so out of it after kidney stone surgery you didn't want to see anyone, let alone all this other new baby stuff to deal with." Then he got all huffy and went outside with DS to play.

Ugh. Needed to vent. And it helped, thanks.

With DS I was in recovery for an hour. This is a different hospital, so I'll have to ask my dr that at my appt tomorrow.

  • Flack for leaving work when you're in labor? Sounds like a delightful job  :-O
He hates his job.  He's been there for 7 years and completed his degree to be able to get out.  He's the primary breadwinner right now with me finishing my doctorate so he is reluctant to leave work for a new job at the moment.  He's on rotating shiftwork and 6 guys have retired within the past few months, so they keep getting stuck with a ton of mandatory overtime.  I've literally done all of the packing for us to move in the next week or so- he simply hasn't been home.  They told him that if I go into labor while he is at work mid-shift, he needs to stay to the end of the shift.  They also said that it's a July baby and he's low man on the totem pole for picks, so he might not be able to get time off.  They're a bunch of peaches.  Can't wait until he's out of there.

  • @beff12‌ - it's supposed to be the size of an actual newborn. My grandmother made it out of porcelain pieces and then sewed a body on using fabric and stuffed it with beads. She even weighed it to make it match my mother's birth weight so it is as close to a newborn as you can get. It really comes in handy for testing out whether a bow is too big for baby's head, etc.
