'Moderately failed' my glucose test

Whelp, I "moderately failed" (their words) my 1hr glucose test :( They said that they consider anything under 135 to be normal but that they dont consider you to have GD unless the number is 180 or above. Mine was smack in the middle at 157. Needless to say my 3hr test is scheduled for Wednesday. I am hoping for the best and am going to eat as sugar and carb free as possible until then (like I have been trying to do this whole pregnancy) but I am nervous that this is not going to go in my favor.

I know that there has been a thread on the glucose testing but any of you ladies that failed the 1hr and passed the 3hr remember what your numbers were?

Re: 'Moderately failed' my glucose test

  • Thanks! I hope so too! I am only up 2 pounds from my pre-pregnancy weight (6lbs total since I lost some in in the first trimester) and I am 27w5d today which I thought was pretty damn good! It's frustrating but I hope I pass the 3hr one!

  • I think its pretty common to fail the 1hr test.  My dr didnt even give me the option for the 1 hr.  (I was tested at 14 weeks because I have a family history and bombed)  I did the 2 hr test.

Good luck on the 3 hr!

I got a call today that I failed the 1 hour. My level was 148, anything over 135 they retest. I did eat a carb heavy meal the night before not sure if that affected my results.

  • I don't have the experience, but it seems like an awful lot of women fail the one hour and go on to pass the 3 hour. It's my understanding that's why many offices will have you fast before the one hour now to reduce all the false positives. (I tried to fast and my office insisted I eat something. All I had were sugary foods that I scarfed down right before the test. Amazingly, I passed with a 103.)

  • I was borderline with ds, and this one I failed the 1 hour with 184. (That's a big fail). 3 hour is tomorrow but I am not really hopeful. I would try to eat as normal as possible this week (although don't eat mega carbs like pasta and cupcakes) because if you limit your carbs now the testing "may" be squed. There are some that believe if you limit carbs and then take the test your body has a hard time metabolizing the carbs in the drink. I don't know if it is true or not though. If you have GD it seems, based on your numbers and my limited knowledge, you will be borderline and really that isn't so bad. I was really nervous with my first diagnosis but it turned out not to be a big deal. This time I am not scared at all just wishing I didn't have it.

About the weight gain- with DS I only gained 18 pounds the entire pregnancy. Following the diet really helps keep your weight down. This time I have gained about 7 pounds and I am pretty sure I have GD so I wouldn't look at how much you have gained as an indicator of whether or not you have GD.

Good luck to you. And if you end up with GD there are some great resources here on the bump. I know it feels scary but it really isn't.

  • FX that you pass the 3 hr test! I have my second 1 hr test on Monday and hoping I pass it like I did the first time! (I had the first 1 hr GTT around 14 weeks because of being insulin resistant)

  • Had my one hour today and praying I don't have to take the 3 hour test.... I barely could get the drink down and have it stay down!
  • I failed with 154. But I also failed my 3 hour so I'm no help. It's more than likely you'll pass. But just from another point of view, I had zero risk factors for GD and I still ended up failing. I've always been underweight so while weight gain/being over weight is a risk factor, it doesn't mean you can't still get it. But let me reiterate, it's very common to fail the 1 hour and pass the 3 hour so best of luck to you!!

I eat throughout the day (I constantly feel starving so I would die if I didn't). I know there is nothing I can do if I actually have it and I am ok with that I just wish I don't lol

  • FX for you and the dreaded three hour test!

I take my test on Thursday and I am super nervous about it, but I have been constantly confused by all the women who take in the afternoons or aren't made to fast before it. I have an 8:30am appointment for mine and I'm supposed to fast starting at 11pm the night before.
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • I question how the test is done in general. Everyone seems to have different instructions. Mine is at 820am and there are no fasting rules. She just said do/eat everything as you normally would and come in. This was the same during my last pregnancy. I wonder why?

I failed the 1 hr last time I think my number was in the 150's I cant remember for sure though. I passed the 3 hr with no problems. Luckily I passed this time WOOHOO so no 3 hr for me, I was pretty sure I was going to fail because I failed last time.

ETA: The waiting is the hardest part of the 3hr test! FX you pass with flying colors!

Anyway, I'll keep my fingers crossed for good results :)

  • I failed my 1 hour one and have to take the 3 hour test this Friday. My Doc told me to 'eat a light breakfast and come in" so I did.. FAIL.. ugh. This time around they instructed me to cut out carbs/sugars as much as possible this week and then fast the night before. I'm 27 weeks and have gained about 25lbs so far.. I fully admit I am indulging in a sugary snack at least once a day.. :)

I'm really hoping I pass this next text, fingers crossed for ALL of us!

  • Thanks ladies... it's tomorrow morning!! I really hope I can make it through without puking. I was able to eat this morning and still had the 'if I don't eat I will die' feeling by 9am (I eat breakfast at 5:45am). The test doesn't start till 7:30 so I won't be able to eat till like 10:45 and am super nervous about it. I plan on taking my water with me since they said I can do that but other than that I just hope my book is good enough to keep my mind off of it!

My OB told me I don't have to fast for the 1 hour. Last time I fasted bc I didn't know I could eat. They Told me to stay away from sugar 24 hours before and have something protein before. I plan to do it in the morning when I do it in a week or so so I can just eat an egg and run. Hope to pass again Good luck with the 3hr tomorrow. Hope you pass.

    Edit to correct a word

  • I think every woman I know has failed the 1-hour. Skinny, fat, big weight gain, no weight gain, fasting or no - they have all failed it. And every last one passed on the 3 hour. I just took mine yesterday so I'm waiting for them to tell me I failed, because that seems to be the way it goes.

I personally think the one-hour is stupid. If so many women fail it, just give us the damn 3-hour test right off the bat and get it over with instead of dragging us along thinking - "Oh no do I have it? Do I not have it - I don't know!?" Like we don't have enough to worry about.

  • Tried to edit but it won't let me for some reason...just got my 1-hour results back. I failed. 150.

I am Jack's complete lack of surprise. :-<

  • Sorry you failed @conversationfear!! Good luck with your 3 hr!

I had it this morning and while it wasn't the easiest thing to do it wasn't too horrible. The worst part was getting stuck 4 separate times for the blood draws!! Hopefully I will get the results on Friday... or maybe Monday so if I did fail I can have atleast one last weekend of normalcy!

Hopefully the 1 hour is just a hoax, and the 3 hour will turn out fine for all of us. I didn't have GD with my last 2 pregnancies, so I hope I don't have it this time either.
