Trying to Get Pregnant

Help a girl out with her Honeymoon :)

Hello ladies,
In ONE WEEK (squeee!!) I will be leaving for my Honeymoon (finally) and I wanted to get your advice.

We will be going to London for a week and Ireland for a week so my question is this:

1) What should we do?

2) What must we eat?

3) What should I not forget to pack?

4) What do I do with my phone?

5) How should we pay for things?

THANKS!!

  • @jefa621 Problem? If you think I am a complete moron and that going on a honeymoon is freaking "magical" and will make a baby just appear in my uterus than I am sorry to disappoint.
I just know that going away from the stress of everyday life can help.

  • @happyhour73 -- thank you! And yes, get back to me if there are any events going on.
I have actually been to London before in 2009 but my DH has never been overseas at all. I feel so guilty because I have been to lots of places and he has not. So, I am glad he has this opportunity.

  • I think you missed the point. The point is, stress doesnt cause infertility/ trouble conceiving.

It is similar it telling someone to, "just relax and you'll get pregnant."
I think you are missing the point too. I just wanted to get others advice about overseas traveling. And I am pretty sure stress can impact conceiving.

  • I will cross my fingers for some good babymaking vibes for you on your honeymoon!

Here are my answers; I've never been to Ireland but have been to London a few times:

    1) What should we do?  @happyhour73 gave some great suggestions!  I'd add: the London Eye, the British Museum, Buckingham Palace.  If it's nice weather walk through Hyde Park/Kensington.  And if it's raining, you can always duck into a pub for a pint!

    2) What must we eat?  Fish and chips!  That's my favorite.  I also like meat pies with mashed potatoes.  And London has some amazing curries!

    3) What should I not forget to pack?  Comfortable walking shoes.  Raincoat.  Layers.

    4) What do I do with my phone?  Assuming you're not using it abroad, I'll usually bring mine so I can use it at the airport, and then just turn it off while I'm there and keep it stashed somewhere.

    5) How should we pay for things?  You can usually use credit cards (in London at least).  I'd also get some pounds when you get there; some banks have deals with international banks where they won't charge you a fee for using their ATMs, so look and see if your bank has a partnership with any of the British banks.  Make sure you notify your bank and credit card companies that you'll be traveling abroad so they don't freeze your accounts!

    Have fun!

This is all great! And I think I read somewhere that travelers checks aren't used as much anymore for some reason... like they aren't as necessary?
Did you find a lot of WiFi available when you were there?

  • In London I would recommend two things. 1) do the touristy things. You won't regret it. Take a walking tour, go see Big Ben and Westminster. Take a bus out to Stonehenge. Definitely go to Harrods and the Tower of London. 2) get lost! The most fun I've had in London was on accident. Get on the tube and get off at a random stop and see what you find. It's an incredible place. I'll talk to my friends and see if they know of anything big going on while you're there. I haven't been to Ireland in a long time. But my favorite thing to do there was just to be. It's so beautiful, just walking around and seeing the countryside and little towns. I'm jealous. If you can't tell, I miss it. Edit because I got so excited to talk about the motherland that I skipped your specific questions. 1.) already answered 2.) surprise yourself. London has amazing Indian food if you're into that. 3.) are you aware that they have different outlets over there? Not being snarky, some people don't know. If you don't already have an adapter for your camera chargers, hair dryer, etc, pick one up. Or you can get cheap ones there. 4.) leave your phone at home. If you need to call someone, phone cards are really cheap. 5.) being a prepaid visa. It will work there, and you don't have to worry about bringing anything linked to your accounts that you may lose.
    1) Is Harrods a department store?

    2) Yes, we know about the outlets and have a converter ready. We will use it for our chargers and hair straightner. My hair is cray.

    3) Excited about Indian food! DH has never had it and I figured it would be best to start him there... but now that you have confirmed this I am definitely putting it on our list. Best Indian I have ever had was in Paris. Lets see what London has to offer :)

THANK YOU for your input. How long did you live in London? (you mentioned motherland)

Last time I was there, our hotel had WiFi so I mainly used that.  A lot of coffee shops had wifi too.  I think that Starbucks and McDonald's had free wifi, if you get desperate!

  • Ooh. I forgot about Harrods. Definitely go there. You can have high tea there which is a great experience though you might have to drag your husband. Awesome shopping there so put aside some cash for that.

  • Go to the London dungeon museum! It is an alternative history museum and a lot of fun. Go to Bell Book and Candle Pub in Kensington district. Great drinks! In Ireland go to Kilkenny and the Cliffs of Moher. Galway is beautiful as well.
Went to London Dungeon in 2009 and really enjoyed it.
I am fascinated with British history. I cried when I touched the London Tower walls...
    Thanks for the pub suggestions.
And I know cliffs of Moher are on my list and Galway too!

  • I am not trying to offend anyone. I hope no one ever comes on to this board to ever intentionally offend. And yes, I was aware of the things you mentioned above. But, stress causes a lot of things in your body. Just ask me.
Stress and grief really fucked me up since 2010. So, I know the power it can have over one's physical well being. Plus: When I am stressed out the last thing I want to do sometimes is have sex... and there you go.

Going on a vacation won't make me any more fertile than normal. But I am sure ready to get the hell out of here for awhile and be romantic with my husband.

  • Obviously being on vacation won't make you more likely to conceive. I think you've got that. But I love vacation sex! MH and I even get excited about staying in a hotel a couple of hours away. There's just something about being in a different bed in a different place. Plus it's your honeymoon so go nuts girl!

  • We will be going to London for a week and Ireland for a week so my question is this: 1) What should we do? The Tube was a lot of fun for getting around to seethe sites, but we also did a day of the "hop on/off bus". We got to experience so much. If you like broadway musicals I would see a play. In Ireland see a cabaret. I'm into castles so we saw a bunch. We even went to a fun night performance where they reenacted the festivities of the era. 2) What must we eat? Clotted cream, I know it doesn't sound appetizing, but it is a delicious topping. 3) What should I not forget to pack? Comfortable shoes 4) What do I do with my phone? You can call your provider to get a plan for your international trip. 5) How should we pay for things? I think we exchanged our $ before, but you can do the same thing over there. After my first year of teaching, yikes almost a decade ago I went to England, Ireland & Wales. I hope you have a fabulous honeymoon!

  • Seconding/thirding fish and chips. And the people watching downtown was wild! So grab a pint by a window or outdoors at some point. Just use your card everywhere - no one takes travelers checks anymore. If you have a visa debit card you can withdraw cash from the major banks atms.

  • 1) What should we do?

I second the suggestion to do all the touristy things.  Go see the Tower of London, oggle the royal jewels, see the Globe Theatre, and take a bus out to Stonehenge.  If you get a chance, consider also going outside of London to Bath.  Oh man, that place is gorgeous.  If you're interested in ancient Roman history, there is a surprising wealth of Roman ruins in England.

    2) What must we eat?
Indian food.  For serious.  Also, when the hotel serves you beans and eggs for breakfast, I know they look foul, but give them a try.  It's seriously delicious.

    3) What should I not forget to pack?
A variety of clothes for various weather. The Baltic sea blows in some really crazy weather.  You'll start the day enjoying sunny teashirt weather, then be miserable and cold when rain blows in.

    4) What do I do with my phone?  Get a European AC adapter/charger.  Don't leave it out visible on you when you aren't actively using it.  Same goes for your camera.  Store them in a purse that zips closed, and keep it closed.

    5) How should we pay for things?
Here are my recommendations for safe travel when it comes to money:

1.) I also always recommend storing your passport and emergency money in a bellyband that goes underneath your clothes

2.)Slip an emergency blank check from your primary account into the lining of your suitcase.  This is advice I would give to anyone travelling overseas.

3.) As for actively used money, set up a checking account specifically for travel, and use that debit card. (this protects your primary account from fraud if your card is lost or stolen).

4.) It is very similar to America over there, in that you can use a card pretty much everywhere.  Don't bother with travelers checks, they were obsolete due to fraud like 15 years ago.  Nobody takes them.

  • Great suggestions, all.

Don't worry @katydid2014 -- I am more prepared than it sounds. I just like to ask other people's advice because I always feel like I am missing out on something and actually some of you reminded me of things I do need to look into/re-check.

I honestly do appreciate everyone's advice and help.

About to do an intro, but wanted to pop in to say that we went to Barcelona for our honeymoon in March. For the phone, we added a one month international data plan to my iPhone. I want to say that 300mb was $60 (AT&T). Just enough data to use maps and post a few pictures to social media as we did stuff. We also use WhatsApp through data to connect with our contact for our vacation apartment rental. Our rental had wi-fi, so we checked Facebook, posted more pics, etc, in the evenings without using data. It was easy to cancel it right away when we got back to the US.
