1st Trimester

What was the stupidest thing you did while pregnant before knowing you were pregnant?

Before I knew I was pregnant my hubby took me to Portland to see an MSI concert. They have been a favorite band of mine since middle school. I had seen them live  twice before but the last time was in my sophomore year of high school. During this awesome concert I had 2 very strong (and overly priced) mixed drinks and after my 2nd drink I suddenly felt the need to jump into the middle of a mosh pit while the band was playing one of my all time favorite songs by them. The song was called "stupid mother f***k*r" and the irony of this is not lost me. Just as i'm about to escape this insane mosh pit that I stupidly threw myself into I was elbowed in the gut by somebody and actually threw up on them!

Fast forward two weeks later i'm sitting in the bathroom with a BFP pregnancy test freaking out because lord knows how much i probably damaged by poor baby that night of the concert and wondering how pregnant I am. (It's a really huge shocker because I was also taking the BC pill).

Fast forward to my first doctors appointment with my OB just last week and I get to see my perfectly healthy blip and it's heart beat in an ultra sound. The Dr dated that my baby was 7 weeks 6 days and that made it 2 weeks when I went to the concert. I'm so relieved my little blip is okay and it makes me wonder what other questionable things moms-to-be on here did before knowing they were pregnant?

When you're two weeks pregnant, you've just ovulated and maybe the sperm has found the egg.

    Relax.

Right? At that point in both pregnancies I was still drinking wine. I was smoking when I found out I was pregnant with DD, but we weren't TTC so there's that. Surprise!

Ditto but I don't consider it "stupid" because I didn't know I was pregnant. If I DID know and did that shit anyways, then THAT would be considered stupid.

    Good call. :-bd ;)

  • I drank a whole lot of wine. We were in Rome for a 100% paid for business trip and there were more than a few fancy lunches and dinners where the wine was flowing heavily for everyone. I also smoked more than a few cigarettes because we were not actively trying to conceive so soon after our loss.

The Italy trip was the week of my missed period and since I wasn't entertaining the thought that we could be pregnant and it was so early on I don't think it was "doing something stupid" I think it was living my life. If I continued to do those things after my BFP then it would be considered stupid.

Yeah, you most likely weren't pregnant when you went to that concert.  Also, that elbow to the gut was probably much higher than the baby was, if there was a baby at that point.

2 days before I got my BFP I got piss drunk.  Peed on a stick before going out that night and it was still negative so I let loose!

Ladies at the time I was freaking out because I had absolutely no idea how far along I was, in my mind i could have been months along without realizing it,but knowing i was only 2 weeks now its not a big deal lol. I have been a smoker for 10+ years (recently just quit cold turkey) and the night of the concert was really tame in comparison to other nights i've had haha.

The week before I found I wsd pregnant with ds we were in Atlantic city and I drank nothing but alcohol and smoked the entire time. I really didnt drink not even once glad of water. On the way home i was so sick I said to my husband.. this is either the worst hang over in the history on hangovers or im pregnant. Sure enough 2 days later I found out I was pregnant.
  • I've watched those shows, "I didn't know I was pregnant" (Which is mind-boggling, btw) and those women often have smoked, drank, taken prescriptions, eaten sushi, dyed their hair, not taken prenatal vitamins, etc.....things that could have harmed the baby but every episode I've ever seen, those babies come out fine.    It absolutely blows my mind.

I am not condoning it or suggesting that a person can drink or smoke during their pregnancy by any means!!!  Just saying, some women have done some potentially harmful things and their babies turned out okay.

I'm sure though, that there are plenty of horror stories of women whose babies did not turn out okay.

Can I ask why this blows your mind?  I'm not asking in a snarky way at all.  I think I'm just too scientifically minded (since I'm a scientist).  Life evolved without doctors, prescription prenatal and prenatal care.  Don't get me wrong - I'm not saying that modern medicine isn't amazing and hasn't saved millions of lives.  But, I am saying that if the human race was so delicate that we absolutely *needed* ultrasounds, special prenatal, and too avoid all sorts of deleterious situations, then we would not have lived long enough to create these stipulations to begin with.

Life before the 20th century was hard for the vast majority of humanity.  It still is extremely harsh in many areas of this world.  Physical labor, no access to running water, eating foods on the forbidden list because that's all there is...  I could go on.  And babies are still born perfectly healthy because - in Mother Nature's eyes - that's the whole point of being here.  Reproduce a healthy version of yourself.  Life will always find a way.  I find the situations on "I Didn't know I was Pregnant" to be really tame versions of the whole history of humanity and pregnancy.

Again, modern medicine is amazing, but it shouldn't be mind-blowing that healthy babies can be born without it.  That's how humans were designed and evolved since the beginning.  Humans aren't half as fragile as so many of us believe.
    Hi Joy,

I agree, humanity went on for many years without prenatal care, so it isn't the lack of the ultrasounds, checkups etc that blows my mind, but its more that someone could go that long without knowing they are pregnant.

I agree that humans are not as fragile as we are led to believe.   I do think though, that it someone had a human being in then, they would start to figure this out long before they went into labor.

I just cannot wrap my mind around this!  That being said, I do understand that everyone's body is different and not everyone is as in tune with their body as others.   I got pregnant years ago and it was unplanned and I was on the pill.  I knew within a few days that I was pregnant. I took a test and it was negative, but I just knew I was pregnant. I could tell something was off in my body.  I took another test the next day and sure enough, it was pregnant.   This pregnancy was similar, except that I was TTC so it was not a surprise, but I knew the day that I conceived that I was pregnant, despite the doctor telling me I couldn't get pregnant without fertility treatment and despite it being our first month of trying. I knew I was pregnant.

So its hard for me to understand how someone could not know they are pregnant for so long into their pregnancy, but I also realize that my experience is just that. Mine.  We are all different.  Its just difficult for me to grasp.  Does that make sense?

And seriously - I'm not saying go out and do cocaine while pregnant. I'm just thinking theoretically about evolution and thinking more about a healthy population as a whole and not individual pregnancies.
haha! I didnt' for a second think you were suggesting that!  lol

  • The day before I got my BFP, my friend and I each piggishly drank an entire bottle of wine and smoked about 5 cigarettes (I rarely ever even drank before so this was a rare occasion). We were TTC but I felt for sure that I was about to get my period so went for the wine. The next day I felt the strangest kind if hangover... Low and behold, I got a BFP! Barely enough hormone to make a line, but prego indeed!everyone I know says not to worry about it, but it still freaked me out.

HAHA Drank like a sailor for a gf birthday party, my night included shots and we ended up ordering drinks that we remember from college ended up being blue motorcycles, long islands, four horsemen.  Hungover for 2 days I swear.  Then Happy hour the next week.

I week later opps four weeks preggers.

  • I spent week 3 at a weekend long craft beer festival, spent week 5 on a brewery and winery tour, and on the way home, I asked DH to stop at the pharmacy... woops. This also explains why none of my clothes fit, since I was starting off with bloat and fried food belly, and all the sudden BFP.  Super.

  • I went on a snowboarding trip, drank A lot of jack Daniels, smoked a lot of weed/cigarettes, not to mention all the falling trying to keep up with the guys
  • I downed a six pack of beer the weekend before I found out. It was only week four, so hopefully no harm done, since the sperm and egg were just getting to know each other.
