Spina Bifida

Had my A/S today and thought everything was okay. Tech told us it was a girl but wouldn't say anything else. When asked if baby girl was alright she was very vague. Then let us know that our O/b was expecting us upstairs. Time to drop the bomb. Baby girl looks as if she has Spina Bifida, fluid on the brain, and club foot. But she couldn't tell us how severe it was so she's sending us to a geneticist next Wednesday. I can't wait that long. Going out of my mind right now. DH thinks it's all his fault because he has Spina Bifida occulta and won't stop crying. This whole process is draining and I feel like I'm losing my grip.

I don't know a lot about spina bifida but I know there is a lot they can do now. Remember, you are in the care of experts who can help you now as much as possible.

So sorry to hear this. I had a friend who gave birth to a LO with a very bad case of spina bifuda. He survived, and he has a good quality of life despite the struggles he faced early on. He has a slew of other complications that are usually rare to have, but if you want, his mom put together a facebook page. You can google Ellis Wayne Autry and it should be the first result.

Oh my gosh, I am crying for you. I'm so sorry. I know someone who had a baby with SB and though she has had many surgeries, Raegan is the sweetest girl and my friend and her husband couldn't imagine life without her. Praying that you will have good news thru this. (((hugs)))

I'm so sorry to hear that! You will be in my thoughts and prayers. My older brother has spina bifida, so I have been around it all my life, with not just my brother but his large circle of handicapped friends and teammates (he played wheelchair basketball).

It sounds like you're familiar with it as well because of your husband, but if you ever have questions or need someone to talk to, send me a message!

I know it's scary and not what anyone would wish for their child, but with medical advances today, it really can end up being not all that bad. Fingers crossed for your upcoming appt to have positive news!

We didn't have an amnio because DS was just fine and she didn't want to do anything invasive for this baby. But we did a Full integrated fetal Nuchal Translucency and ob said blood levels were fine.
