help! gender reveal craft fail

so, you may have read my post about deciding to do the hershey bar reveal idea below. i bought the same hershey bars and the exact blue neon sharpie marker and the damned thing will not properly write on the slick wrappers! at best i got a faint blue mark but if i try to color over it it does what sharpies do and kind of makes the line lighter instead of darker. i'm frustrated beyond belief. does anyone have an idea of how to make this work?

Hmm...what if you color one layer and then let it dry before adding a second to make it darker?

ETA: Pinterest's DIY board is made up by lying liars who lie. About 2% of ideas I get from Pinterest actually work...I should be one of those people to make a "nailed it" blog. :-w

Is there any way to rough up the wrapper with a nail file? Maybe it would ruin the wrapper...
Or what about nail polish?

When I last saw these done, Hershey bars had a paper wrapper. Maybe you could try like paint or nail polish or something?

Do you have a Joann's or Micheal's near you? Or any type of craft store? Near the scrap booking area they should have pens/markers that work on glossy paper. They should even have some that work on like photo paper. You might get a better result with those because they are designed for high gloss material.

If not, would you consider making a sleeve? You could make it as wide as the HE portion of the bar with the same font/size in blue. You could even add EDD ect. then just fold it around the HE portion of the bar and tape it down.

I did a Google search and found that people had success using the Sharpie Paint Pens. Here is a color scheme like you're looking for.

Or perhaps add a piece of clear but frosted scotch tape over the letters. The roughness of the frosted tape will take the marker but you can still see through it.

thanks guys. i have some snack sized bars i can try different ideas and practice on (and eat the fails). i was hoping to get out of this cheap and easy just like the photo depicted. keep the suggestions coming and i'll let everyone know what works best in the end.

I was going to do this DIY too... Seemed so simple and inexpensive. I should have known better. Thanks for the tips before I start and thanks to OP for asking! I made my own custom sleeves for our wedding favors and it was a nightmare. I hadn't realized they changed the Hershey's bars to the plasticy wrapper instead of the foil. So I covered 200+ bars with foil sheets, then the printed sleeves (which ate up so much ink btw). I basically forced all my friends and family into free labor and had an assembly line lol. I was a hot mess about the whole project.

Go to the art/drawing section and get either Copic markers or Prisma Color
Markers.. While they are more expensive they will write on anything

i found my solution! i went through my stash of markers and pens (i have many and it's kind of hard to pass up the BIG pack of pretty multi-colored gel pens or ink pens or what-have-you) and found that the BIC Mark*It pen works great. the regular blue was too dark against the brown wrapper but the aqua is perfect. turns out things are going to be easy and cheap afterall! trying to add a pic to this, hope it works...
