Still swaddling? Come in please!

LO is 9 weeks and still likes to be swaddled. We have been using the Halo Sleepsack Swaddle since week 1 and have since upped her size to a small (11-15 lbs I believe?) I estimate she is close to 12 lbs now. Not sure if this makes a difference. Move forward to last week where I bought a Miracle Blanket bc her arms were escaping and overall it got to be just very bunchy and I think would arouse her at night. First night in that and suddenly she slept 9 hours! Next night, back to her usual 4-5, plus now she was kicking out her feet. I have been experimenting w alternating between both swaddles and alas I get the same result. Either kicked out feet or squirmy hands, plus only 4-5 hour stretches. (Or past 2 nights, 2-3 hr stretches)

I'm also starting to think perhaps the blanket is not what made the difference?? I just don't know with this kid- so different from DD1! I know all kiddos are different, but I can't help but feeling so clueless and lost that one would never think I was a (semi) experienced mom. Yes, I believe she still loves to be swaddled bc she will wake almost immediately if she doesn't have one. (See below) She's just too big I guess for her own good!?!

Question is: any recommendations on a different type of Swaddle blanket?

  • We still swaddle and LO will be 10 weeks tomorrow. We use the swaddle me. We can still squeeze him into the newborn one, I've ordered the next size up, but they haven't one in yet. He sleeps SO much better in the swaddle!!

  • We use the Woombie and it instantly soothes her. I also have the same dilemma, I was getting 8 hour stretches with it now we are back to 3 hour stretches...boo!

  • We just switched from using blankets to the Merlin sleep suit. This LO hated swaddlemes. The sleep suit is great.

  • We were having the most newborn success with the Halo, but since DD has gotten bigger the SwadddleMe seems to work better. She isn't able to escape from it as easily.

  • We swaddle still at night (twins are over 4 months) using the halo swaddles. We have the miracle blankets, swaddlemes, and swaddle blankets but I like the halo ones the best.

  • Once that happened with my first kiddo, I moved up to the Woombie.
  • LO is almost 11 weeks
I swaddle at night with her arms out or she's in a sleep sack
Her arms have to be free
  • We use the SwaddleMe and and actually swaddle her with a super thin blanket first. It really ?cocoons her in!

I need to get me some of them fancy gadgets ;).

We still swaddle at 10 weeks, but just use a light blanket. I tried the halo suit, she didn't like it. She doesn't seem to like anything heavy on her legs. I'm hoping to stop swaddling her soon, once she stops startling herself awake.

  • Still swaddling but getting nervous doing so. She can get herself basically in her side when swaddled. She can roll from belly to back and is working on back to belly.

I'd like to stop but this girl moves her arms way to much

I use one and a quarter yards of flannel fabric in various weights. I also have some cotton stretch muslin.

    i've mastered baby origami. she's 9 weeks.

I'll sometimes use the swaddlemes. not usually. they aren't long enough so I'm tempted to just make a straightjacket of sorts and cut the bottom off.
  • I wish we didn't have to swaddle still, but we do and still use the halo sleep sack the hospital have us. I have a swaddleme on order. Hoping it works as well because I can't imagine lo sleeping in the sleep sack once summer is here!
  • Julian is 7 weeks old and we still swaddle with the arms out using a large cotton gauze blanket. He's learned to associate it with going to sleep so we swaddle even for naps.

  • We've been swaddling with an a&a blanket and then a halo sleep sack over it. I just got the miracle blanket today so I'm excited to try it.

Anyone else's LO have leg issues with the swaddles? He either needs his legs swaddled super tight in the m/froggy position or so loose that if he stretches they don't touch the bottom he freaks out if it's anywhere in between. The doctor said his hips are fine but I keep thinking it might not be the best idea to swaddle his legs that way.
  • LO is 8 weeks and we're still swaddling using swaddleme, arms in. He loves it and sleeps best this way, if he isn't swaddled he wakes himself up right away. Swaddled he's sleeping 6-8hrs/night

  • Hmm I'm leaning towards the SwaddleMe now...how does it "fasten" around itself? Of course DH was just like " God how many Swaddle blankets do we need???" Um hello- enough to get more sleep!
  • We have a halo sleep sack swaddle thing in newborn size.
  • Hmm I'm leaning towards the SwaddleMe now...how does it "fasten" around itself?

    It uses Velcro

    @sanibel21 that's genius!

@LittlePigeon‌ I think this is our issue as like you we used the halo at first. How long is your LO and how much does she weigh? Just want to get an idea of what I can roughly expect. I think my LO is long at 22 inches and 12 lbs.
  • I use the swaddle me or the swaddle me wrap sacks which have more leg room.
  • We use the halo sleep sack with detachable arm swaddle panel.
  • I've been using swaddlemes since the boys came home from the hospital (11 weeks now). They've worked great. I've noticed that they can bust out if it isn't snug enough (if dh swaddles lol) this isn't usually how they get out, but I thought it was funny enough to share
  • Just tried the miracle blanket tonight. He slept 10:30-3:30 instead of 10-2. He's never slept this long in 11 wks so maybe it was the miracle blanket for you and then a growth spurt or wonder week hit? Any difference in the day?

Maybe try the miracle blanket a few days in a row and look at other factors? Room temp? Gas? They say on there to fold the bottom if their feet don't touch. Have you tried that?
  • Ahhhh!!!! Now she really threw me off last night...slept 7 hours in good ol' halo Sleepsack Swaddle wtf?!?! I still think I'll try a new one though....
  • We swaddle with the halo except we keep his arms in that sleep sack and not through the arm holes so he has to really try to Houdini it to get his arms out. I need to check out the miracle blankets.

Yes. @PerkyErky‌ we have always done this, but I has been seeing her little fingers sneak up sometimes....I think it just depends on how tight you pull the panel across and how much you can keep their arms DOWN at their sides so they can't float up...As in the natural way I think they are all used to in the womb if that makes sense??

@erinsullivan427‌ I don't know about the growth spurt thing...maybe though. At her 2 mo. checkup today she has grown 2 inches since birth! I think that's a good amount, so yea maybe that was it. When you say "feet don't touch," I read that too but I thought it meant like if their feet don't dip into the bag thingy? (Feet holder) So I guess you read it to be feet don't touch the bottom of the bag???? This is why I love M14....my common sense when I'm a space cadet!!

That makes total sense. I guess since I'm just now starting at 11 wks I can't imagine a baby's legs not fitting but he used to be tiny! My son is really weird about his feet. They either need to be not touching at all or all folded up in the froggy position so I assumed they meant that!

  • Another vote for SwaddleMe! She escapes sometimes but not very often. She pretty much can't sleep without it.

  • We still swaddle at 9 weeks. She sleeps well in the halo but sometimes gets an arm out and I'm always watching that the flaps don't ride up to her face with all the wriggling she does! Just ordered a woombie.....anyone else use these?

We still swaddle (arms out) or use the sleep sack with comfort strap. She needs to have something tight around her midsection to fall asleep.
Oh and she is 10weeks tomorrow

This is probably a stupid question, but I'm confused about swaddling with the arms out. We use the Swaddle Me and do arms in. If you swaddle with arms out does it still keep them from reacting to the Moro reflex & startling themselves awake by flailing their arms?

My LO is 8 weeks and we still swaddle. She has the Halo SleepSack, though she's no longer in the Small, she's in the next size up (because she's 14 lbs already). I only swaddle her at night, though. The rest of the time, I just use a blanket to wrap her and let her "break out", or else she doesn't nurse often enough during the day

  • Elly Belly is nearly 11 weeks, and I recently started swaddling again for naptime in his swing. It's the only way he will fall asleep without me! I use the a&a blankets since its been warmer out lately, but I have a stockpile of swaddleme's too :)

Yes, that confuses me as well I have tried swaddling with arms out, but usually they will flail up and wake her. So then, what is the point of the Swaddle?? I guess some babies just like their mid-sections all cozied up, exclusively? Hmmm...
  • Update: bought a SwaddleMe, slept for a ridiculous amount of time last night, never broke out once on either end! That thing's it! (Well we'll see about tonight...) it was tighter than all tight!! Thanks to all for your recs! ;)
  • Why do the swaddle me's have a hole on the backside? It's. It big enough to do anything. I have an ok one that has no hole, but I ordered new ones and they do.

Swings?? Honestly don't know. I do push through the extra fabric through it so it doesn't bunch ( easier then trying to straighten it)
  • We use a+a swaddle blankets still at 11 weeks.
