Natural Birth

Induction & Natural Childbirth

FTM and due today. I know my OB will induce at 41+3 and I have great faith that my body will start on its own before then; however, if that doesn't happen, has anybody been induced (pit, etc.) and still managed to have an epi-free birth?

Re: Induction & Natural Childbirth

  • Jeez with that policy I'd have had two inductions. Rather than thinking about the induction, I'd be thinking about alternatives to that before hitting 42 weeks. Like going for more monitoring, NSTs, that kind of thing. If you and baby are healthy there's no reason to induce at 41w3d.
This exactly.  You can say no to anything.  Especially medically unnecessary inductions.

  • I was induced with pitocin and was able to have my twins epi and intervention free. It was a wonderful labor and delivery. I'd prefer pitocin free but for me it wasn't bad at all and I'd do it again if my ob was recommending it.
Two sets of fraternal twins, 23 mos. apart First set born 12/27/12 at 35w0d via IVF Second set born 11/18/14 at 35w6d via FET
  • I understand I can say "no" to anything but my question was "has anybody been induced (pit, etc.) and still managed to have an epi-free birth?"

thank you @rachelkongsore@hotmail.com for your answer.

Funny thing about the internet, you can't control people's responses.  Sadly a lot of people don't understand they can say 'no' to anything, which is why pp mentioned it.

I was not induced, but my MW talked to me briefly about inductions during our hospital tour.  She said that part of the reason women have a hard time with inductions is they feel like they must stay in bed.  She said she encourages her patients to still try to stay upright and change positions often.  Examples she gave were sitting on a birthing ball next to the bed, pulling the rocking chair up near the bed and rocking, etc.
  • With DD2 I managed to avoid pitocin by trying cervadil first (at 42 weeks...I wanted to wait as long as I could. Midwives would've induced me a couple days earlier if I'd wanted when I was in with ore labor but we wanted to wait). I don't think it was any different than my first labor with DD1 when no induction was needed. No pain meds needed, actually went really smooth. I think pitocin is very different tho which is why I really wanted to avoid it. Apparently with STM they often don't start with cervadil (which is nearly always done with FTM at least for my midwives) but for DD2 my body just needed help getting started then things progressed well. If they don't plan to give you a few hrs on cervadil first before the pitocin, I'd talk with them about that option

My water broke and I still wasn't having contractions after 18 hrs, so I was induced with Cytotech. It did not affect the strength of my contractions, and I was able to go free of pain meds or an epi. I also know at least three people who had pit and still went natural, so it is doable.
  • Thanks for your input everyone - I appreciate it!

i had pitocin after being stalled and still went natural. assuming you have had your baby,
    How did you birth go?

  • I realize this is an older thread but thought my experience may be helpful. I was induced at 41w4ds with my 2nd baby. They started pitocin at 10am and I labored using hypnobirthing. I had a successful pain med free birth with baby being born at 6:05pm after 20 minutes pushing.

  • I wanted a natural birth with the epidural. I always heard to get the epidural. I am so afraid of tearing when I push, and that I'll feel that. I don't have a high pain tolerance at all.
