@jgslr said to believe every body/baby is going to respond the same way yours did is . . . and I filled in the gap with "narrow minded" . . . . because it IS narrow minded to think all babies respond the same.
I was not naming you at all, @crunchymama11. Neither did @jgslr, if I read her right.
I'm honored to be part of the crowd that is popular and encompasses @NRyan55, @crunchymama11. However, if you took what I said as directed specifically at you, then maybe you need to re-examine why you feel that way. I just made a blanket statement and pointed no fingers. #tryingtostealmostdiplomatic from @sleepy33.
Me thinks you have a guilty conscious?

it's not the first sly dig you've made towards me.
Then you should go back to the antibiotic thread, because there are no sly digs going on over there.
Now i want to know who the popular ones are, because that seems to be a common complaint. Is there a list? #amionit #thatpoundlooksweird #ohyeahpounds4lyfe
@btimes3 There was already a post on this. @dh13 posted it like 2 weeks ago, I think?

I too read the BLW book cover to cover and decided not to do it. I agree that the way it is depicted in the book is a little idealized and there are many more bumps in the road than its proponents like to admit. Similar to breastfeeding actually. Anyone actually read The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding? Baby crawling to the boob, my ass.

Have you ever looked for it on YouTube? There's plenty of videos. Look up "breast crawl".
Every other mammal can find their way to milk as newborns, why can't humans?
I remember when our LO's weren't eating food yet and BLW was brought up and @crunchymama11 was asked a bazillion questions on it and she answered them all and everyone was all "omgeeeeeee, I'm so doing this! This is the only way anyone should ever feed their baby!"
And I'm over here like "I'm going to feed store bought purées because I'm lazy and they're easy and delicious". But whatever you want to do....
I just don't see why crunchy is getting all this backlash now. Don't like BLW? Don't do BLW. But she was extremely helpful to everyone who had questions about it in any capacity. Answering the same questions over and over. Give some credit where it is due.
To be fair, @jennlin, most other (land) mammals also walk the day they are born, or within a few days. I think my baby might have opened her mouth and kind of rooted, but crawl? No. Not saying it isn't a thing, just saying it probably shouldn't be used for breastfeeding marketing.
#btwilovebreastfeedingtoo
But I read that the first 10 days or so of a baby's life they have natural instincts to move their legs like they are walking if you hold them up. I they tried it with my son and he did it every time for about 2 weeks and then he stopped. Reminded me of when you hold a dog over water and then start to paddle their feet even though they aren't in the water yet.
Yep. They talk about it (and demonstrate it) in "the science of babies". It's on netflix.
Dd crawled right down to my breasts after she was born. I was still numb and she was on me and knew what to do. Unfortunately, she found two empty canisters.
I'm not saying the crawling never happens. Of course it happens. We've even been provided with YouTube proof. What I'm saying is that in this particular book, that idealized situation is presented as the norm which is a set-up for frustration and disappointment. I think BLW is the same way. The book makes it sound like you throw some food in front of your kid, let them do what they want and within a few short weeks they'll be gobbling everything down like a freakin' foodie. Just my opinion, anyway.
I have no clue if this is a UO/HTT/random thought, but I will post it here.
I saw the greatest point for vaccinating that I have seen yet, and from such a fresh perspective. I can't remember verbatim but it was basically this:
How sad is it that anti-vaxxers perceive that a life with a disability (i.e. autism) is worse than a life with a potentially fatal disease that could be prevented by a vaccine. So basically to take a leap they would rather their child be dead than disabled.
ETA: #boomgoesthedynamite
I am very pro-vaccine, but I would assume that the anti-vaxers have the not my kid syndrome i.e. they think if I vaccinate my baby it could get autism but if I don't it is highly unlikely it would get the disease and be perfectly fine.

@psychdoc12 what, specifically, does it say in the book about choking? Because on the BLW website she talks, very nonchalantly, about how her child choked on an apple and needed "the old slappy-back thing"...Uhh I'm pretty sure that's also called the heimlich maneuver. And I'm pretty sure if you're performing the heimlich manuever on your child they are not just happily gagging on their food. For me to be comfortable with BLW, I want guidelines. I want to know exactly how to prepare the food- to what consistency, what shape etc etc. From the research I've done (mainly the website) it just sounds way too "yeah go for it. If your child chokes, whatevs" to me.
The book emphasizes that gagging does not equal choking, and theorizes that choking is less common in BLW babies because they learn early on how to manage food in their mouths and that they need to chew it before pushing it back (unlike those evil purees which teach baby to suck food directly to the back of the throat :P). I don't recall anything in the actual book about "slappy back" and choking is not treated nonchalantly it's just presented as a rare event. They do have a section on avoiding obvious choking hazards like nuts.

BLW is that simple. I think some moms can over-think it, make it more complicated or expect it to go faster or whatever. But BLW isn't that complicated.
I started BLW with DD2 on Easter and she still has yet to actually swallow anything. She gets it in her mouth, moves it around, sucks on it, spits it out, squishes it, drops in on the floor, licks her fingers, bangs the plate on the highchair- everything but actually eating it!
I hate when people say this. Tons of food gets wasted all the time. I'm not saying that makes it any better that there are starving people, but are the people saying this donating their leftovers to those people? My money's on no, but if you are, hey, good for you and I hope you're donating to a charity with integrity.
Guise, I have an idea!!!
How about... You do what works for you and i'll do what works for me. Neither is better or worse, just different. Aaaaannnnnd we can respect each other's choices and all live happily ever after. I have tried blw and i've had moments where it scares the bajeezus out of me and times when dd has impressed me. I was open to it, I prefer purees but I'm glad I tried blw.

This was my thought process after reading this: "Yay, deedee the peacemaker...deedee the...peepee...yeah, nope that nickname won't work"
No matter how you decide to feed your kid, they're going to learn at some point how to eat effectively. My kid won't be only eating purées til college just bc I'm introducing them now. I do a mix of BLW and purées (I guess that's not a REAL thing, apparently) and I'm not gonna stress about her learning "how" to eat at this point.
A thing of baby food costs about the same as a package of ramen noodles. New college food?

Waste of food. There's starving kids in Africa.
I get very cereal when anyone talks about Africa.
