Re: Exclusively pumping Big Thread

  • @kwolslager‌ maybe just pump the recommended 20 minutes? You're a saint for doing it for 45 minutes! Sometimes I loose track of time and do it for 30 (until the pump cuts me off and turns off automatically) but I don't get THAT much more from that 10 min. If I got as much as you I might do it more often! That's amaze balls.

@JessieAlbin‌ way to be a champ and pull through. Just remember, any amount of breast milk you're able to give your baby is better than nothing l. Three days is better than no days! So you're a success no matter what. I will keep my FX for you though. Do you supplement with formula? I had to do that for the smaller twin for a couple days when he was born.

  • @patunia7321‌ less than half an ounce. I power pumped my midnight pump the last three times and got 14.5ml, but even with that and getting a solid 8 pumps every day, the daily average is only up to 9.5ml per session. My supply is steadily increasing but by such a teensy increment that I don't think it is going to get that big boost everyone else does. I dunno, maybe it's a blessing in disguise having a great excuse to FF.

@KatieGummow‌ yeah, our pediatrician and LC have had us on similac for supplementation since his first appointment last Tuesday cause he lost too much weight from birth. After a good weight check the next day they had us reduce the formula amount but he lost again (no wonder, poor kid was getting nothing at the breast) so we went back up, finally got our pump on Friday, and decided it was better for all parties to forgo the boob and bottle feed everything I could squeeze out so we would know how much he's getting. That and I just couldn't take a frustrated baby screaming with my nip in his mouth anymore.

Did my first power pumping session yesterday. How much do you typically pump from a power session. I pumped 4 oz which is double what I pumped on all my other pumps that day...

So jealous of those of you without supply issues. :(

  • @snmetz7‌ keep on chugging along! It's great your seeing some kind of results. I hope your supply keeps increasing. Don't stress too much though. The milk is good for our LO's, but not as good as a happy mama.

@eme520‌ I'm with you with the envy of breastfeeding moms. Motherhood and parenting are hard. I wish the books would have prepared me for this.

  • @JessieAlbin‌ how long have you been at it? I had the a similar experience at our first visit with the LC and pedi. It was devastating. And my increase has been super slow as well. 6wpp and tried ever trick imaginable and I'm only up to an ounce sometimes two (typically during power pumps.) Same boat as @embear22- I know it sucks. According to the LC my milk never fully came in? Didnt know that was a thing- we *had* a decent latch but the poor little guy was working so hard for practically nothing :( My OB joked at my last appt that a sure fire way to make sure you have enough milk is to not want any at all in the first place ha!

  • @Stace0616‌ I needed to hear that, thank you!

I have LO in her swing or RnP within arms reach so I can swing or rock her if she starts crying. Generally I pump right after I have fed and changed her so I have the greatest probability of her sleeping but that doesn't always work out.

  • @patunia7321‌ been pumping for a solid week now. The pediatrician told us on Tuesday to give it another week so I am holding out over the weekend before I put this godawful contraption away and give my dried up boobs a rest.
  • Curious to know what others EPing goals are...I'm hoping to go through the summer (end of august) and hopefully build up a stash to stretch out an extra month.

I am so ready to quit EPing... I am only 3 weeks in and I am so tired of being tied to the pump. I don't know how to get out of the house for more than a 2 hour time period?? This is just a frustrating process!

My goal was/is to EP until I go back to work. I have one week left and today I gave my first half BM/half formula bottle. I have a month's worth of BM frozen so that when I completely quit pumping I will start pulling that out. My new goal is to do half BM and half formula once I go back to dreaded work on the 19th.
  • @jbug88‌ I am EP because my baby is in the NICU so I see LCs frequently. I had one this week suggest trying a larger flange size even though I didn't technically need it because I could possibly get more when pumping. I'm not sure if it was a fluke or if the flange helped but I have been pumping 150-200ml more per day since I switched.

  • My goal was/is to pump until I go back to work as well. I've made it 4 weeks and notice I get plugged ducts and pain when I go too long between sessions. So I've backed off slowly in preparation. I'm down to about half as many pumping sessions per day, and see a noticeable change in supply. I have about a week or two worth of BM in the freezer and am still getting enough BM per pump for about 75% of all feelings. Gave my first bottle of formula today and was a guilty mess he whole time she ate, but I know I won't be able to pump enough while at work to keep her 100% BM. :(. At least I made it 4 weeks of complete BM before having to start ff some.

  • @nursewinnie‌ I am so glad that you and I are in the same boat! I hate that I feel guilty for the decision I have made, but I know that it will make for a happier family in the end!

@Jessieann1020‌ I like your thinking! It makes total sense to me!

When I mixed the formula bottle I made the mistake of smelling it. It had this awful metallic sort of smell unlike my typical sweet smelling BM. That what set off the guilt. LO didn't seem to care one bit, she scarfed down almost the entire bottle no problem. I just know that my days at work can be so hectic that I sometimes barely get to eat lunch, so the likelyhood of carving out time to pump is slim to none. It's sad and I know legally they have to accommodate but I don't want to draw unnecessary negative vibes from management as we are currently in what the CEO calls a "fiscal crisis". (Aka- I don't want to get laid off)
  • My goal is to continue to pump until I go back to work. The twins get 70% breast milk and 30% formula now. I go back to work full time in mid August and the most I will pump then is 3 times a day for my own sanity. I only pump 6 times a day now. My girls are almost 6 weeks.

  • I spilled 4oz of milk, and got a clogged duct.

For the duct it is heat, massage, and more frequent pumping, right??

  • Yes for the duct frequent pumping and massage and heat. I have had several - anytime I fall asleep on my side I get one. They really suck but are usually cleared up in 1-2 days.

That's what I do. I apply heat a few minutes before pumping and leave it on while pumping. Then midway through I take it off and do some massage. I've also heard and have started taking ibuprofen when I have one. It seems to help as well. They really suck, I'm so sorry you're going through it.
  • @megla‌ - Have you tried hand expressing or using a manual pump while you're out? I go 3hrs between pumpings (sometimes more if I am sleeping or out). But I take the manual Medela pump with me in my diaper bag in case I end up being out later than planned and get engorged. Only had to use it once so far, but it's nice to keep with me while I'm out.

I plan on EPing for six months or until my milk dries up. I'm kind of taking a "whatever is meant to be will be" approach to EPing (much like I did for BFing). So far, I'm producing enough for his daily needs plus a 4oz bag each day for the freezer stash. But if it starts being too difficult or stressful for either of us, I won't hesitate to move to formula.
  • scarlesscarles member
@Stace0616‌ I actually just received my manual medela pump with that in mind.

@KatieGummow‌ thanks! My plan is actually similar. I'm going every 3 hours as well and hope to move to 4 hours soon. I think that will make a difference.

My ultimate goal is a year. I know they say to set small goals, but I feel guilty thinking of anything shorter than a year. Mom guilt sucks! I have no issues with formula and I don't understand the guilt. It's really crazy!
  • scarlesscarles member
Do you guys rotate through your freezer stash? I am thinking of using frozen milk every Tuesday or Friday or something like that... Just so that milk doesn't get too old. Any thoughts?

I do! Two-Three days fresh milk one day frozen.

@Jessieann1020‌ do you have a manual pump that you can use to pump for comfort?

  • Yes to the guilt! Every time I think about quitting I feel like I am being totally selfish and horrible even though LO is getting a minuscule amount from me anyway- I feel like I absolutely have to give him anything I can. Small goals, we are at 6w now and my next goal is to make it to his 2 month pedi appointment.

    imageimage
  • @KatieGummow‌ if you massage the whole time you pump you may be able to clear it up in 1 or 2 pumping sessions! Just massage the crap out of it!

  • I eliminated my 11pm pump and agree with @eme520‌ about supply. Though, I cut it out only 2 weeks into pumping. My supply is still ramping up slightly, I get in at least 7 pumps per day (sometimes 8 if I'm too engorged to sleep). I was told that your supply can be affected by lack of sleep, so giving up the 11pm was an easy decision. Plus, I'm hoping I'd have to give it up in a few months when he's STTN so why not now when I really need the extra sleep to function?
  • scarlesscarles member
@eme520‌ I'm hoping for the same thing. My supply is pretty good so I'm hoping I'll have enough at 9 months to finish off the year.

I'm going to continue pumping during the night until Jack starts sleeping longer stretches. I usually pump at night based on his schedule. He's only 3 weeks old, but hopefully we can get some 4-5 hour stretches soon!
  • scarlesscarles member
@Jessieann1020‌ I haven't heard of that med. hope it works for you! How was your surgery?
  • megla said:

I don't. I want to get one for those times we are gone a long time. I think I am a weirdo because I don't ever get engorged or uncomfortable though. Sometimes if I go a long stretch at night they will feel a little tingly. I mainly want it to get in the pumps so I don't hurt my supply.

I talked to my LC and she seemed very supportive of domperidone (sp?). I am thinking about ordering it now that my gallbladder surgery is out of the way. Is anyone on it?
I don't feel super sore or engorged anymore either. My nipples get really itchy/tingle that's how I know I'm full!
