Bridesmaid dress problem/emergency

Sooo way back in November I was with my bff (aka the bride to be) and all the other bridesmaids trying on dresses...The saleswoman at the shop asks us all if any of us might be expecting by the time of the wedding (late July). I have 3 kids already (plus I'm the only bridesmaid already married)so of course everyone looks right at me and I'm like "noooo way, nope, I'm all done" We go ahead and order the dresses, mine is a little snug (but zips) and I figure hey I'm eating right and working out I'll be fine.  FLASH forward to March, I pick up the dress and idk what the hell happened, can't zip it over my boobs! I'll just workout harder eat more veggies..etc..FLASH forward again to 2 days ago I FOUND OUT I'M PREGNANT...AGAIN. first thought after "oh shit, 4 kids" is "omgee how am I going to tell my bff that I can't fit into the dress!!?! any thoughts on what to say?

Re: Bridesmaid dress problem/emergency

  • Can you order a bigger dress? Or cancel this order and get a mat dress in a similar color / style ?

  • The dresses came in March...already bought and paid for with no returns or exchanges...it's empire waist but my boobs are already growing...even if I ordered the dress now in a bigger size it took 4 months for the dress to come in last time, the wedding is in less than 3 months now :/
  • Oh duh poor rewarding comprehension skills on my part.. can you find a seamstress to add a panel? My gf had to do that ... Or swallow the cost and buy a similar dress in a bigger size/ mat? gL!

  • I think your only options are to rush a new dress or find a really good seamstress to alter the one you have. Good luck!

  • One of the bridesmaids for my friends wedding didn't fit in her dress, but didnt try it on until a few weeks before the wedding. David's bridal was able to rush order her a new dress in 2 weeks. I would call the store and see what options you have. Good luck!

Can you add a corset to the back to give you some more room? Would that give you enough room? I'd talk to the bride and see what she thinks, but consider what you are able/willing to do financially first... I can't imagine a bride wouldn't just tell you to find a similar dress off the rack somewhere or see if the shop will work with you

  • Hopefully there's a bit of extra fabric at the seams and you can get it let out. Maybe you can even order some of the fabric? Another option would be to put laces in the back .

They could always order an extra panel or two and let out the seams in the dress to make it fit. But panels are expensive - maybe it would be cheaper to just buy the dress in a size larger.

(Side note - you already have 3 kids, and this 4th pregnancy is a surprise - sounds like you need a better BC method...)

You are making so many assumptions regarding the OP based on her current pregnancy when the post wasn't even about failed BC (which you are presuming was the case).

    Jan 15  NOV siggy challenge:

  • I liked the other poster's idea of dress swapping w/ another bridesmaid....that's what we had to do for my wedding. My SIL was about 16 weeks and my sister had lost a bunch of weight so they just traded and it worked great. If not...find a good seamstress!

I'm sure OP appreciates the smart ass, unsolicited advice on how pregnancy happens/her birth control choices. I'm pretty snarky myself but that was just tacky. Some people, including myself, don't use BC. Personally, we were open to having a third. That doesn't mean that I didn't have a few "oh, shiit, 3 kids!" moments.

  • Call the store first. I've been able to exchange from David's Bridal weeks before a wedding. If they won't do that then I agree about contacting a seamstress for an alteration to add a panel.

I'm also rolling my eyes at everyone giving OP a hard time about having a 4th. If she planned the baby or not is not what this post was about.

  • I would hold off on calling the bride and stressing her out. Call the dress place first and see about possibly exchanging/altering. If not, rush ordering a new dress is going to be expensive, but an option. If none of those options work, then and only then would I bother the bride about it and ask what she wants you to do.

I agree with DragonTears507 - wait to call the bride until after you've talked to the shop and sought out a seamstress. Then call her and let her know your news and that you already have a dress plan - that way you don't add to her stress or make it a bigger deal than it needs to be.

  • Thanks Beevol and DragonTears! I'll definitely try to get my dress situation fixed before talking to the bride :) side note- my hubby just asked me if BFP means "be f*in pregnant" -LOL
  • OP - I don't know if you could potentially sell your BM dress on Craigslist or something, but my MOH for my wedding coming up in Sept will be 9 months prego at the time & we actually found a boutique here in our area that RENTS maternity dresses. They have a wide range of very nice dresses and the rental is only about $35. I'd check into something similar in your area:)
