I'm slightly pissed right now

Tomorrow is our school's track and field day for SD's age group.  She loves it and looks forward to it every year.  She was in flag football last year and quite likes throwing around a football with DH. She really wanted to participate in the football throw even tomorrow, but she was told by the school she wouldn't be allowed since she is a girl. I mean, it's just throwing a football, so why can't she participate?

Did y'all ask them about this?
Ask who?  The school?  She was just told today she can't participate tomorrow.

  • I know at my school a girl wanted to play regular season tackle football and the coaches tried to strongly discourage her but couldn't legally say no she couldn't all together.
Of course that's NY and high school, I don't know about your state :( but that's some bullshit.

Who said that, though? Her teacher?

    Could you call the principal?

    Your poor sd.

  • DH didn't get the specific person she spoke to, but I think maybe she was too upset to reiterate @rondackhiker.  I am strongly encouraging him to look further into it.

I just told DD and she said it's bullshit. She said to make her a tshirt for tomorrow that reads, "My school says girls aren't allowed to play football." Amusing, but probably not the best route to go.

  • texted BM to get more of the story.  DH isn't great about proper communication...

SD asked her teacher, who said she would ask the person in charge. That person told her no, because boys aren't allowed to throw in the softball event.

  • If there were a girls' football throw, fine, if not then they should let her compete with the boys.

Still, she shouldn't be told she can't throw a football since she has an option to throw a softball.  I don't feel it's a fair comparison.
ITA My line of thinking was that maybe the school was thought it would be ok as long as each sex had a ball to throw, but it's still not cool IMO. Football =/= softball

If the boys have the option of throwing a football AND a baseball, that's really fucked up.

edit: I'm just trying to assess the level of fuckery happening there.

  • I mean, it's not like she's playing football-- she just wants to throw some pig skin, FFS.

    I'm furious for her.

  • I've been doing a little online research because I'm a nerd for civil rights laws, and I really think you could make an argument that this is a Title IX violation.  Title IX has an exception that allows separate boys' and girls' sports teams, but I couldn't find anything allowing exclusion from individual events.  And even with teams, if there is no girls' team for a particular sport, girls have to be allowed to try out for the boys' team unless it is a contact sport.

Here's a link with information about Title IX: https://www2.ed.gov/policy/rights/guid/ocr/sex.html.

And a link with information about filing a complaint with the Office for Civil Rights, should you decide to go that route (or threaten that route).   https://www2.ed.gov/about/offices/list/ocr/complaintprocess.html

  • That's total bullshit for so many reasons.

  • What a bunch of bullshit. I would be tempted to engage in an all out war with the school over this shit. Curious to see what ends up happening!

  • I'm still furious this morning.

How does a vagina mean you can't throw a football?

Why isn't everyone competing in any event they want?

Dude, I am so pissed over this!  I would be in the principal's office first thing this morning.  I'd absolutely threaten to go up the ladder and possibly call your local news station.

Then I'd dial up all the moms attending the event, have them all meet up at the event, and stage your own football throw with the girls.  Fuck that noise.

Make a scene, let them know you won't stand for their bullshit, and make sure that principal knows you mean business.  What fucking era are we living in??
If the school doesn't change their mind then I second the news station. I would kindly inform them that the 1950s called and they want their stunted brains back.
